New Bafang Crank-Drives

Do you mean the plugs on the main power supply to the unit Aushiker, or the plugs on the speed sensor extension?

Main power supply ... where the battery plugs in. I have as of an hour ago the EM3EV 36V battery.

Also have a second question ... would 12G wire be okay for a power lead? WIth the motor at the front of my recumbent and the battery at the rear I need a power cable that is around 1.5 metres long.

Would none of the extension/spare 'motor power' cords offered as spare parts at GBK/BMS etc do the trick? Or are their rather excessive 'freight' costs quoted for the smallest items just too difficult to countenance?

I've a 45kg (99 lbs) cargo bike with 36V 500W 25A Bafang, powered by 14.2 Ah (2C, 500 Wh) Li-Ion bottle-mount battery pack. Usual cargo is 29kg (64 lbs) and I am a heavy build 100 kg (220 lbs). It's a coastal area I live in so I am well familiar with hills of different grades. Only ordered a Speedict meter so have no detailed data so far but I am averaging 45-50 km (~30 miles) at the traffic pace of 22-38 km/h (14-24 mph) per battery load commuting.
Few screens from Speedict after installing it yesterday evening. Usual commute although done my best to pull as much and as often as traffic conditions allowed for. PAS 5/5 but most of time WOT and spinning.

I reckon the voltage needs to be calibrated on the thing. The handheld meter showed me 39.6V hot (not 41.6V), so Speedict indications are 5% higher.
At such level of use the 500Wh battery pack should be enough to cover 35 km.

I did have a look at GreenBikeKit but could only find one cable, a nine pin cable whereas the one on my Bafang BBS01 is two pin. By the looks the one at BMSBattery is the same.

Hunting around I think I found the brand of the connector, MaiTech and I found a very similar one at http://dx.com. The difference is this the one at DX.com is a screw connection whereas the one on the Bafang BBS01 is a push together type and it comes with cable, whereas I just want the cable.

I think my options are asking Paul if he can build me a cable using the Bafang style connectors or do as you suggested and change the connectors, to say XT90. Time to hone those soldering skills :)

Installed my replacement controller tonight. It was very easy. There was no need to remove the motor from the bike or even remove the crank arms. Just drop the chain ring and guard down the arm on to the peddle and loosen the plastic gear cover. Then undo three bolts holding the controller case and it pops right off. Plug in a few cables and put it all back together.

It has cured my display <-> controller communication error so that's good! :D :D :D

Going to tidy up the wiring and take it for a night spin round the block.

EDIT: there was quite a bit of sand under the gear cover. Might have to clean that out regularly.

The power spread still isn't improved with this controller:

PAS1: 20W
PAS2: 200w
PAS3: 450W
PAS4: 520W

WOT: 800W, 18A peak.

In fact it looks to be a 500W controller :?

Not impressed.

Going to Jaycar to pick up a plug for the programming cable. If the current cant be set above 18A it's going back.

Well, i switched gears and bought two new rides, both will be BBS01 350W bikes. The first kit came from EM3ev. But the second is coming from lectric cycles. For $100 I'll take having someone I can get a response from except on American holidays and a vendor that will actually take phone calls. Nothing bad to say about Cell_Man. If I had gone hub drive he'd have gotten another sale. But I like the BBS01 so much and Lagrand, sp?, answered my phone call within an hour or so during business hours. A huge plus. His kit is going on the same model but a larger frame size.

I really like this ride! Unfortunately my budget is blown and insufficient cash to try the 750W after buying two bikes.

Sorry = my error. My BBS01 wiring has been so tightly integrated into my bike's rather complicated frame that I've forgotten what's what. There do seem to be more of these threaded-collar power cables around - I've been looking too as I have a similar need.

I think you are likely facing a time-zone thing in communicating with EM3ev. Living in Australia I have found him very responsive and quite timely in his replies to emails. The phone thing is - for me - neither here nor there. Judging from when he responds by email, I suspect that Paul often works well into the HK night - which suits me! He's probably also working in a different business environment compared to your USA vendor (who no doubt also does an excellent job). I suspect Paul competes domestically for Bafang's attention with hundreds of other Chinese resellers. That he manages to do so effectively and then translates this into reliable supply and service to a relatively small overseas market is a credit to him. I'm sure its no small enterprise to take such a task on!

I suspect that he faces quite a different business environment from that faced by vendors in the USA, UK or Europe. Although his up-front prices for some items (not all) appear a bit higher, I value Paul's responsiveness, his ability to meet special requests and needs, the high quality of what he delivers and his obvious straight-shooting honesty and consideration (especially when it comes to shipping costs). These things are important to me.

Me too! But I am in no way being critical of Paul. I'm thrilled that you and other regulars steered me to him. I was safe in his hands. Thank you for that. Now that I have a better understanding and have had exchanges with a statewide vendor, a 9% premium to invest in another Yank seems a no brainer. if I had followed through with a hub drive, it would have been EM3ev. I never found a USA source I was comfortable with for a hub drive system. I can see my mistake, had I made my comments without reference to a specific vendor you might have seen the logic and intent. When I purchased my first drive there was no USA stock, that I found.

It's OK - not having a go at you. No 'mistake' on your part, no criticism intended on mine and I'm sorry if my comment came across that way. Just making sure that good service experience gets positive and explicit acknowledgment - mainly because the question of 'which vendor' seems to come up often enough to warrant it! I'm sure that you'll be able to say something pretty positive about your experience with the fellow in the USA too!

In fact, I should acknowledge my generally +ve experience with GBK as well. They don't seem to go much beyond just selling stuff (no custom services, not much advisory support etc) and one gets a strong sense that language differences remain something of a barrier, but they have certainly been reliable for me and reasonably responsive, and they are a bit cheaper than em3ev. Unfortunately their shipping costs for small items seem silly. I bought a couple of DC-DC converters from Paul and they arrived via China Post for a few dollars. Similar weight items from GBK attracted a $40+ cost! This seems to be a problem with some Chinese ebike vendors - not sure why.

In fact this whole internet purchasing thing seems to have so much potential for misunderstandings and disappointments that I reckon those vendors who seem to understand the fraught dynamics and go the extra mile are worth acknowledging. Perhaps we should think of them as part of the 'ES community' (if there is such a thing) because they're actually making a +ve contribution. Which is what I reckon an on-line community is all about.

Incidentally, Paul is sending me some HWBS ('hidden wire brake sensors' for the uninitiated) because I want to install a BBS on a bike with V-brakes, retaining the current Shimano DX levers. I'm not sure if there has been a report thus far on these items so I'll post regarding the outcomes when I get them fitted.

Savvas.

i also want to know, whether BBS controller compatible with HWBS. the supplied lever tend to wobbles and the build quality seems not that good..

from what i know, the supplied brake lever ( Wuxing ) only use 2 cable, and HWS using 3 cable (they required +5V supply ). and there's also another problem about the connector, i don't think they have the same connector..

waiting for your progress sam.

I have one ready to be installed on my BBS01 conversion. It came from http://em3ev.com all nicely wired ready for installation.

Mine is being stalled with Avid BB7 disc brakes.

Andrew

I recently ordered parts to make a BBS based bike. I purchased avid BB7 brakes like you. I thought brake levers supplied with the BBS kit would work with BB7 brakes and cut off the motor. I am wrong ? Is it just a matter of supplied brake lever quality that makes you choose other levers ?

If your brakes are mechanical, the BBS kit should work.

They are. I was worried because Aushiker has the same brake and don't rely on stock BBS levers.

I have just received a new BBS 01;

- Should the bottom bracket shaft turn as lightly as on a regular bottom bracket?

I can barely turn the shaft with my fingers, so maybe some adjustment is needed as described by Kepler at page 34.
The drive is not mounted on the bike so there is no additional preload on the thrust bearings.

The standard brake switch is a hall sensor (3 wire) so it sounds like they should be compatible. Just may need a connector change.

Is it possible to use the HWBS with the shifter cable for those of us with hydros? Or am I best off fitting a hall sensor to the hydraulic lever as illustrated in earlier posts? Thanks.

I find the kit levers to be every bit as durable as those found on any bike in the $450-550 range. We'll see how they hold up. What are the replacement options that represent an improvement?

Thanks,

Tom

That is fairly normal. Wait until you have it fitted on the and you have the cranks and pedals fitted. On a new install, with the chain off, I typically see about 3 full turns backwards from a hard hand push and 1 1/2 turns forward from a hard hand push. This will loosen up further after a few rides.
