newbie question - bafang and gng + Norco

Hi there,

Great place to be. you are all a great inspiration!


I have a Norco hard-tail that i want to electrify. chasis is 20", wheels are 26". gear, if matters is 24 Shimano.

i'm trying to figure out what would be easier to install -

now, i know that BMS's is 750 (though the link says 350), but i'm talking about practicality of installation mostly and reliability.

also, which and where do i buy a suitable battery ?

i know that i need 48v with 10-20ah , but that's about it...
there is a big triangle space in my bike for a battery / set of batteries that could do the trick.

am i missing anything else except the mentioned kit(s) and a battery pack ? any additional stuff ?
i guess i will need to renew my brakes and perhaps also get better tires and refurbish the existing gears, but that's about it(?)

I am building a trike for a client, and will be using one of em3ev.com's frame -mounted batteries.

They also sell the Bafang BBS01 & BBS02 mid drive kits, so you could make it a one-stop shopping trip.

+1 to what teslanv said. EM3ev.com is a much better vendor to deal with, and he has better quality batteries. Shipping is going to hurt from either of them, but it will be combined so cheaper from EM3ev if you get the battery from there as well.

And BSbattery is very likely to send you a Honey Badger instead of what you ordered, then argue with you about it not being an acceptable substitute. They are like that sometimes. They don't care, they don't give a sh..

The BMS02 is probably easier to install. The GNG can be modified easier, but it's also a lot less refined, and will need a very precise installation and regular maintenance to keep it from eating it's self, your bike frame, and/or your ankles if it gets a taste for human blood.

does em3ev also do Chinese delivery? i will need to find the same kit in order to compare apples to apples here

8) Get the highest amp charger for your battery voltage. More amps = faster charge.
You also need to decide what form factor of battery you want. I prefer the frame pack batteries, but they don't list the 29E cell (11 Ah) version with that kit. Which is what I reccomend for best performance.

there is also the option of buying the kit without the battery and then source for what you have recommended, which i dont know what it means...

as for taking the best charger - there a variety there from 110$ to 540$ - taking the 540$ is too pricy for me. rather go with the free one. how long a full charge will take ?

To roughly calculate charge time, take battery capacity (# Amp-hours) and divide by charger amps. So 15 Ah battery & 2A charger = ~7.5 hours to fully charge from dead empty.

A Triangle Battery & Bag is a great solution, and you will get better performance out of that then the frame packs. The Frame packs just look more " commercially manufactured" I guess is the best way to say it???

there is a vast price difference between packs, so it's more than just being fit.

looking at the following setup, what would you say ?

That's the set-up I would recommend. Note that there's an extra $70 when you select the 11Ah 29E cells. Add them all to your cart, and then plug in your address and you will get some shipping options. Since you are getting a battery, you will need to select "battery" shipping method, which is a little more expensive. And if you are paying with paypal, there will be some processing fees on top of that, as well as currency exchange fees.

now i'm wondering if the rear flywheel should be upgraded as well and also replace the chain to a stronger one ?

i know i must upgrade my brakes to disc ones. how do i know which will suit my frame ?

hi all,

package on its way and while i'm at it, i'm looking for a conversion kit for disc brakes... i found out that my current rims lack the needed adapters for a conversion, hence i need to either get new rims (expensive...) or get a full conversion kit. i'm talking about mechanic disc brakes, not hydraulic ones.

can anyone help with a suitable conversion kit that is not too expensive ?

A new chain is always a good idea. Chains are disposable wear parts that need replacement every so often anyway. Might as well start fresh.

A "conversion kit" doesn't exist, but most bikes can be converted

Avid BB7 disk brakes are available for around $50-$75 per wheel if you check ebay for clearanced last year's models or takeoffs. BB5s are also good. Anything less expensive model isn't worth the savings. most will come with the disk and the brake lever.

If the hubs on your wheels aren't disk brake hubs, then you will need to replace them and get them respoked into your rims. Or just replace the wheels as a complete unit. a decent set can be had for around $250 from most bike shops. they might even have takeoffs available from someone who upgraded their wheels.

with these kind of prices, i will stick to the current V brake system and wait for the kit to arrive, after ill test the performance i will know if i need to upgrade or not.

as for the chain - will do. same goes for the tires, daddy needs a new pair of boots

package was delivered to my friend in HK, i'm thrilled and hope all will go as well when he's back to my country.

i found a local dealer for the batteries and they will build me a suitable battery when i'm ready and in a cheaper price that buying it online.

now i'm in need for some advice regarding a seat suspension -

project progress -

package arrived and installed.

changes -

1. brake levers werent compatible with my braking system so i've decided to stay with the original (combined mechanism of the gear shifters and brake levers in one)
2. not all 8 gears in rear wheel are applicable, going lower than 4 (123) drops the chain, going to 8 and i have a scratching sound, so i'm between 5-7, though 7 is the best
3. speed sensor is limiting my speed to 25kmph and i dont know how to remove the block. if i remove the sensor i'm free to run at full speed but i dont have a display on the control panel dashboard - anyone knows what to do here ?
4. battery setup - 52v15AH
5. got me a new set of maxxis tires

todo list -

1. add a rear carrier for the kid and grocery
2. add front lights (already ordered and waiting for delivery)
3. improve front shock absorber and replace seat shock absorber to a suitable one - currently there isn't any, it's just a stick
4. find a suitable protective wear for hands chest and shoulders - considering to take the protective wear i have from the motorcycle
5. fix gear / replace with an improved one.

got a little issue with the chain on my bike. it wont hold the power of the engine, not even if i peddle first.

would like to hear your recommendations on a stronger option.

some updates -

got a stronger chain By Connex. holds up much better and i even use more of the gears i have on the bike. previously i was limitied to 5-8 and now i can go even to 2-8.

added a kids chair and taking my 3y old for rides, he loves it.

added a shock absorb to the driver's seat. didnt help much...

next mission - upgrade the chassis to a better one.
