Norco Empire 8150 build (page 20 pic heavy)

I've got a hobbycity charger, and after a hard run my 8S batteries show up as 7S on connection to the charger. The charger still lets you go ahead and charge at 8S anyway. With a bit more charge in them they read 8S. 8)

Hehe, it sounds like its counting the cells on the basis of the total voltage. Which seems silly since it balances each cell group, right?(Or does it?)

One word -
AWESOME!

I as many of us have also been following your build thread and am always pleased and inspired when I see your latest eye candy (technically and asthetically).

Let me say, the video quality was awful for me but man did the ride look fun (esp with the battery charger issues! - PM me if you are interested in some left overs of mine that may be of use for this purpose - pro bono + s&h) and although it's loud and disturbing at first... 30 seconds into it I figured out why, it sounds like a battle bot!!! I kept (in the back of my mind) waiting for it to flip you off, sprout a chain saw and hack u up! (mostly kidding).

Bike is coming along freaking great! I await the day you get your first, finished product ride (version 1.0 anyway, youve been bitten by the EV bug) and I await with the patients only rivaled by my 3 year old son waiting for cookies from the oven to cool!

The level of craftsmanship (given the tools apparently on hand) is nothing short of inspiring (and mildly deceptive, you make it look too easy to make OCC looking B L I N G with a DRILL PRESS? I have a dremel drill press (had another but it burnt up 4 days after I received it, I kept it - maybe replace the motor with a BLDC and meanwell power supply to run it, they are proven fairly reliable now.

Final two bits:

I notice you are offering or planning to offer frames built from identical design as yours but intended for hub motor, cyclone or other RC motor designs? Are these available yet? Do you have general pricing yet or details on what's included, lead time and weight? If you would like to discuss this but are not ready to do so publically, please feel free to PM me for my contact info... price and production capability are my primary concerns (and factor the qty I may be interest in). Again, the frame is fantastic and the design excellent (subject to weight distribution information, sorry had to).

Let us know if you finish it and want to follow in Recumpences footsteps, I know I woud be interested in buying the final product as a Prototype Collector Item, I am certain that many others would be interested too.... you do quality work!

Looking forward to see more vids.
Copy everything after (=) sign from the youtube site and push the youtube button on this forum then paste it.

You can not push the link with yours vid that I already had done for you and link it again, as it is player_embedded,
but you can search your vid on youtube and do it again without it already saying player_embedded, like seen in above picture..

anyway hope I got this right and back to the ebike project. :D
Awesome ebike.

Hey Paul,
That is a seriously neat bit of engineering.
Looking forward to seeing some more video action when you find a bit more space to run it up!! :D

Hows the RaceLink coming along? Can't wait to see it goooooo!!!! That 3220 is guna hammer!

Still in the parts gathering phase. Currently deciding on my hubs, rims, and a charger. I can't wait to hear some performance figures from you. I still have my 8150 sitting here too. I may put it on my cy-glide, rename it to astro-glide. :)

It may be better to offer complete frames, rather than inserts because (if I remember correctly) heat treating is a one time shot on aluminum. If you add welded components to a heat treated frame, you cannot just re-heat treat it. I believe you need to do all welding of non-heat treated parts, then treat the entire frame. I may be wrong on that, though. Bear in mind, even if that is the case, if you over build it, the frame will be fine. I built an aluminum freestyle frame 20 years ago and it survived just fine with some additional gussetts. :)

I must say, this is one of the best thought out designs that has actually been brought to fruition that I have ever seen.........

Very nice work Paul, that's a good looking bike you've got yourself.

Just to add to Matt's comments on welding. You can actually re-heat treat frames, but it's not a practical proposition for most people as it requires solution treating at 540C followed by ageing at a lower temperature. Unless you have access to a thermostatically controlled furnace it's probably better to over-build as Matt says.

For anyone who's interested in welding aluminium there's a very good summary on pages 2–6 of this magazine:

If i can find info to suggest it is compatible to weld to 6061 with the correct rods then that will open the floodgates with donar choices... been looking but no joy yet, maybe its not possible.
Looks as if it is, according to this: http://alcotec.com/us/en/support/upload/Aluminum_Filler_Alloy_Selection_Chart-2.pdf

Yes, 5183 looks as if it has a slight edge on strength, while 5356 has slightly better ductility. 5356 is much more widely available, so personally I'd stick with that. I'd suggest making up some weld test pieces. Simple lap joints would do. Put them in a vice and try to break them apart with a hammer. It'll quickly give you a feel for the strength of the joint.

I can't hold a candle to Miles' information mining skills, but thanks anyway :)
