Biofuels made from food crops are like rainwater collection. They both increase cost and reduce supply enough that they can only work in a culture that is legitimately trying to conserve resources. That is not capitalism, ever.

LOL. Biofuels as far as the stuff we see are heavily subsidized by the government and are controlled by capitalists at every step. They rely on vast supply chains of fertilizer and Diesel fuel, incorporate multi-million dollar processing plants and distribution chains, all protected by legislation passed to enable them, all which would be impossible without finance and capitalism.

Many people dream of making biofuels in their backyard, but they never do. It's too impractical on a small "rainwater collection" scale. They dream but they never run the numbers, they just assume an acre of corn will appear and get harvested by magic, crushed and processed and then they are sitting by their still making buckets of free fuel

Every generation has its dreams and it's energy scams. After WWII it was Nuclear Fission, which was really just a means to recoup the billions spent on the R&D and enriched uranium plants by convincing the utilities to take on enormous debts for the "Great Transition". Also it would allow the military to go on making vast amounts of enriched uranium for weapons with a good cover story. Nuclear was going to be "too cheap to meter" said the spin back then but even with all the tax-payer subsidies it was not at all cheap.

Biofuels, Nuclear Fusion, Solar thermal plants, Hydrogen fuel cells, "Green Hydrogen", quantum computers... Untold billions thrown down ratholes and nothing of value produced. Once you've lived through a couple of these capitalist scams you start to recognize the playbook and can dismiss them out of hand. But there is always a younger generation of gullibles that come along to buy into the latest craze. That's how the world works, that's how money is created and debt grown at it's optimum rate. Without these scams, housing bubbles, IT busts etc we wouldn't have gotten as far as we have innovation wise and that's the truth. The EV/Powerwall bubble has flooded the world with over capacity and now we'll enjoy cheap batteries for a decade and more to come just like we enjoyed cheap quality computers after the dotcom bust. I did for years and tens of thousands of miles. Served me well when I had to travel hundreds of miles a day a few days per week. Old turbodiesel, filtered/dewatered used teriyaki oil, two tank system. I agree, it's not for everyone, nor is there enough supply for everyone, but it served me well, advantageous for myself and the restaurants (they would give me free dinners when I picked up their used cooking oil) and the $$$ savings in fuel expenses helped me put my kid thru college.

It will be interesting to see the flow on effects of the disrupted northern hemisphere planting season. As for buying all that other stuff made from oil, well as a retired guy over 60 I've pretty much stopped consuming anyway. The younger ones though will have to raise their incomes somehow, if they want to level the playing field. Toxic positivity and the "Universe will look after me" aint gonna cut it anymore.

Unless i am premature , it would seem that gas/petrol prices have returned to pre “SOH” levels ( locally to me at least !)
Even diesel is back to parity with regular, (and below premium) prices. @ Au$1.60/ltr.
I assume other oil related products, are simiilarily available again ?

Australia is a special case, a tiny population and chock full of resources Asia, and the US, wants. They have been falling over themselves to supply us with refined product to ensure our continued supply of Gas, Coal, Gold, rare earths, food, iron ore, copper, bauxite, you name it, we have it. We are even a major exporter of crude oil believe it or not. 90% is sent north to the heavy refineries in Asia. 230,000 barrels per day.

Of course! And they are considering building a new one, the old ones are all flogged out and not designed for the heavy oil coming off the WA shelf anyway. The cost of a new one? $10 Billion. That's a big investment into an industry that doesn't have much of a future. When we built the others the Oil was abundant and sales were increasing every year. Those were the ramp up years but now all those fields are depleted. Australia's oil production peaked around 2001 and we've been in steep decline since then as have most countries. Any company thinking of committing 10 billion will be borrowing the money and they must ask themselves how long it will take to pay back, with interest, and is it worth it when we can buy it from the Asian hubs where the refineries are new and can handle heavy oil.

It's not like building a new woolies in an expanding town where the returns are guaranteed, we use less and less oil every year, and it will run out for all practical purposes sometime in the next few decades. Building a new refinery sounds like a no brainer until you understand some of the reasoning WHY they haven't built one since 1965. That last one was the Brisbane one, and it's still running because it's the youngest. Thankfully I live in SE QLD

Oil has another 100+ years on current resources. Australia has untold and undeveloped oil reserves if only they were alowed (politically) to be explored.
Australia has not built a new refinery simply due to business/operating economics.
With the recent events in mind , that may well change ..together with the political view on local oil and gas development.
Despite the many critics , it is very obvious that a developed society cannot survive without Fossil Fuels.

Yes, that's basically what I said. When oil was abundant and cheap it made sense to build refineries, now it makes economic sense to import the product, and at the end of the day economists are in the driver's seat of our nations. Perhaps the federal government will build a new one? $10B is nothing compared to the debt they now have on the ledger. They wasted 50 billion and more on the NBN, which is, in my opinion, technically redundant with high-speed mobile and Starlink services. But it served another purpose. One I won't get into here.
