Overvolting GM E-Bike controller

I recently picked up a 24v global motors e-bike off craigslist. Ive read that some members have had success running these bikes at 36v but eventually the controller will fail, or fail immediately. Is there any component in particular which is prone to failure, or does the whole thing go up in smoke? The controller seems to have some pretty nice features. Are there any modifications possible to make this run more reliably at 36v?
