Doc,
Sorry if something got "Lost in Translation". I believe your speed was FASTER than you think. Even a gps reported speed can be significantly off for such short distances. Only trust a GPS speed as an average over at least 500m or 1km. If you had something between a 17 and 18 sec time in something very close to a 1/4 mile which is 402m, then, especially because you had to go easy on the throttle at the start, you must have had a top speed of over 60mph.
That said, if you want to compare speeds to those from a time slip at Bonneville, then you need a much longer course, because Bonneville speeds are an average over a mile and are an average over multiple runs. I know that your bike is far faster that the record claimed at Bonneville for the fastest electric bike, however, I believe it to be an apples and oranges comparison. Their no pedals bike is one thing, but if their bike was legally a bicycle in the US, which means only 750W.
Regardless, I'm on your side and feel your efforts are greatly beneficial to the e-bike cause as a whole. They are the most energy efficient form of transportation known to man. I just hope I get a few more years of lonely roads before we start having the bike congestion of China, because then much of the fun will be gone.
Get ready for some friendly competition though, because I have 5-6 months to prepare for dry season, and by then I should have the "fastest road legal electric bicycle in the world". Of course, I have a tremendous advantage in that all I need is pedals, since there is no wattage, speed, or weight limits that apply here. I also have 5 multi-kw hub motors that have a no-load speed of 960rpm at 60V, and 5kwh of konions + 3kwh of LiFePo4, so it's just a matter of getting some higher voltage controllers and building a safe enough vehicle. In other words, as Luke mentioned, get ready for some friendly competition.
You were definitely the first, so congratulations, and thank you for lighting the way for us all and sharing so much along the way.
John
