Patterson with PAS

My bike shop has been trying to install a Grin Technologies ebike kit using a front hub motor, the CA3 controller, the Patterson drive with PAS magnets, and an 8-speed Internal rear hub. Their mechanic called this morning and has "given up" trying to make the PAS communicate with the CA3. Can someone provide a list steps I can use to try to get this thing working? I'll be picking the bike up in about 5 hours. BTW, I'm all thumbs. I reviewed Justin's video, and he makes it seem so simple. Obviously, there are some "tricks" involved.

Since the mechanic is having problems making the CA 'communicate', there really aren't many things to check - there's not much going on with basic PAS wheel sensors.

  1. Go into Setup and then to the "SETUP PAS SENSOR" screen. There you will see a pair of arrows labeled 'P' and 'D' ('Poles' and 'Direction' respectively).

  2. Power up the CA and rotate the crank slowly. You should see one (P) or both (P+D) of the arrows alternating between UP and DOWN as the magnets pass the sensor. (I'm unfamiliar with the exact sensor on the Patterson, so not sure if it's one or two for that device.)
  3. If the P arrow does not alternate, then the sensor is either defective or improperly installed. Check that a pin in the PAS connector has not been pushed back into the shroud and so not making contact.

If it does alternate, then all is well and you have a configuration not a communication issue. The first thing to check is that PAS->DirPlrty is set correctly - if reversed the CA will assume you are pedaling backwards and not respond.
Refer to the [strike]Un[/strike]official Guide for further assistance with configuration. (This is not a 5 second read and will take some time to tune properly...) Contact Grin Tech Support for specific help.

Thank you so much. I'll be checking that out and printing the xxofficial user's guide. After picking my bike up, I can tell I'm going to have a host of questions about getting this "beast" under control. It's been such a long wait. . . .
