Post how/where you mounted your controller

I'm looking for a stealth look and had considered putting my controller into the webbed portion of the Topeak Mondopack Hydro where the water bottle is supposed to be. This will secure it while giving plenty of air to circulate and keep it cool. Any thoughts on this? What else have you guys done to hide or secure your controller? I've seen some underneath trunk racks and others beneath the bottom bracket. Mind posting photos of what you have?

Here's what I do -CIMG3681.jpg
I've refined the mounting hardware a little bit since this pic but it's worked fine in this location.

My big block 24fet controller is under the seat, and a touch of black paint recently makes it invisible under there. Gone too is the duct tape with a new A123 battery within the "triangle". Sorry a bit of work left to do before the post beautification unveiling, but this old pic gives you an idea about controller placement. As a bit of a teaser, I decided to make it 2wd and I needed a lower power motor for the front, so I decided to add a 5304 in a 24" in front. The Xlyte is 20% too slow to keep up with my rear hubbie in a 20" , so I have to add a 4s voltage boost pack in front of the X5's controller, which will be added either under the downtube or hidden by the instrument panel on the top tube. The new alignment won't add much, if any to the 60mph top speed, but acceleration should be brisk to say the least.

That won't hold a candle to the bike in the works though. I'm building a vaguely similar bike with a bit of rear suspension travel that will get Hubmonster at 120V for the rear, and the same motor as the rear on Blue in a 24" wheel at 100V for the front, and even better aero. It's gonna FLY with acceleration meter over toward exhilarating, and should be quite an upgrade from my current Fastest Street Legal EBike on the Planet pictured below. Blue was just a motor test experiment in Dec '08, but Tiger will be the real deal.  The big Kelly controller required will go under the motorcycle seat as well with the front controller hidden somewhere. 8)

Well, not the stealthiest but securely mounted and out of the weather. With a phony misleading sticker installed it could be anything from a" bicycle GPS unit" to a " reality drive inverter" just be creative and hide the wires. ;^) I would favor a secure mount rather than one that can move around. Will probly save you wiring problems someday. Not that you can't make some kind of secure mount within the bag cuz I expect it could be done.

My Lyen 18fet fits nicely under the rear rack and still has room to breath. It gets pretty warm sometimes, but not as hot as the hubbie

I never cared about stealth, but like to mount behind the seat one way or another. In this case, attached to the front of the battery box behind the seat. P8120018.JPG In another case, a spot on the frame worked goodMongoose blackcomb commuter.JPG

In that last pic, a second controller is visible under the rack, but that was for a temporary test.

Kind of a notoriously wet spot, but lots of folks do mount a controller there or someplace on the downtube, and simply seal up the seams.

That's definitely pretty stealth, so that's very cool.

P0: 6FET - On the side of the Seat Post (first version). Unfortunately my leg kept hitting it and the mounting flange would on occasion cut my leg if wearing shorts.

P0: 6FET - On the side of the Steerer behind the handlebar (later version). Grew tired of getting my leg cut so I moved it here. Not perfect, though better - and yet I still had issues cos it interfered with steering, especially tight cornering.

P1-Rising2.jpg

P1: 6FET - In the front of everything and covered by the front faring (not shown; first version). This I think was the best position for FWD. The front faring was shaped to provide forced-air cooling.

P1&P2.Spanaway.jpg

P1: Dual 12FET - Directly behind the Seat Post, each mounted on the side of the adapter which holds the rear rack to the top rear suspension though is difficult to see in the image; it's just in front of the Ortlieb bags. Probably not the best place cos it has been a source of much conflict with the rear tire. The wiring needs to be fastened down and generally has been a pain in ze rump.

Conclusion: Best to put the controller(s) in a place where there is no mechanical movement and little human contact. A faring helps protect it from the elements, though make sure there is ample air flow.

Cheers, KF

My favorite place I've p[ut a controller is here:

It's behind the yellow cover, which is open in back, just in front of the headtube.

My least favorite place is on the fork leg, but the phase wires are too short to reach otherewise, and I have yet to get to replace them:

The longest-lasting place has been on CrazyBIke2's front triangle:
DSC04379.JPG as it's now been there a year, just held on with hose clamps.

I've also had one secured to the side of batteries inside the center triangle on CB2, when I used SLA and brushed motor/controller. On DGA it's also been inside the cargo pod, where overheating blew up caps TWICE (but didn't kill the fETs). On The Velcro Eclipse, it's been just in front of the triangle's battery bag (best), and inside the bag (not so good), and even once inside the handlebar bag.

Mine is cheating, just like the bike, but it's the best place I have ever had one!

It's just in front of the motor below the seat, Lyen 12 FET.

Mid-drive bent! That's pretty cool. Hope to see you on BROL (bentrideronline).

Under the rack, which is raised by the torque arms about 15mm - it was a topeak rack, but the stupid arms bent (and the controller got closer and closer to the tire) and finally snapped, so its now using replacement arms made of 3mmX20mm steel strap - no movement.

Completly invisible, and still allows access to the installed keyswitch on the rear of the controller :)

That's a 9fet. I crack the bag open at the top corner during hot days. It has survived the suffocation for about a year now.

I'm officially jealous of an endless-sphere bike. Please start a new thread focusing on that cool ride of yours! I love the color combination!

Thanks! I think I posted a thread somewhere, but not too many were interested I guess.

Here it is... http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=28936&hilit=+finally+finished
