Allright, so Bob Mcree may be into spare ribs, and when all else fails a banana will keep me going for ~10Kms... But I think poutine is a preferable food for several reasons:

First is that it's cheaper per energy content, and while meat has more protein but you really don't need that much. The excess just makes your excrements and sweat smell alot worse anyways.

The larger energy density of poutine means if you eat until you're full, you've ingested more energy then with with the ribs. It also means if you ate poutine until you're full and tried to equal that energy with ribs, you'd be way too full and unable to ride very well.

I should point out I think poutine is more enjoyable to ingest then ribs, because there's a blend of more complex flavors that varies as you eat it, whereas ribs tastes mostly the same as you eat it. The one thing with ribs that poutine really lacks the succulent burned fat parts that I love the most, although I'm sure there must be places that will add some for you if you ask. But usually the closest I find is in the form of an extra bacon, and that's pretty good too. However, there's so many variations of poutine that you could, as I do, use it as fuel source every day or two and not get tired of it.

At least in my neck of the woods, shops that have poutine are much more common and faster then spare rib places. I guess this would vary by location, but hey even Mc Donalds serves the stuff here (theirs is pretty bad, though)

Anyways, so the other day I went to my nearby Ashton restaurant and ordered a regular(large) dulton(ground meat with spices) special(sausages) with extra cheese, extra dulton and extra raw onions. Minutes later, I got my meal:

I started as I usually do, by eating the toppings with most of the cheese. Sometimes I'll mix it all up and then eat it:

Once the top layer is gone, I like to add ample ketchup & mayonnaise to what's left, you know ketchup is essentially sugar while mayo is fat, so it gives somewhat of a kick that boosts it. It's also really good.

After about 30-45mins I was done eating, and it was a delicious treat!

We look forward to the end resulting product as this is processed and burned and converted into biodegradeable waste. Make sure you note the amount of energy consumed and burned in the process being this is in the battery section. Also, note the weight difference and smell of the waste before and after processing. Use a good balance scale.

If I ever find myself in Quebec for some reason I'll be sure not to eat at
any restaurants. That's some disgusting looking stuff there. Perhaps fuel for a new type of methane battery would result from eating this crap?

Around here this is what we call a " Poutine " .. but rather " Poutine Acadienne " ( some call it poutien Rape ( the " e " needs the french accent on it.. don't have it on this keyboard )

For those of you looking at this going " What the hell puked that up ? " It's a mix of

50 % Cooked and mashed potatoes
50 % raw potatoes put thru an industrial sized blender made of up a washing machine motor and a steel drum with sharp holes drilled thru it..with the juices squeezed out in a pillowcase

Squeezing the water/juice out of the potato mush is the tricky part, too much out and they become too dry, leave too much water and they don't hold together..

Then you add up a handfull of salted pork in the middle and boil them up for a few hours..

Coat it with Brown sugar, and it's a one of a kind meal.

First time i went to a restaurant and ordered a " Poutine " .. and got fries with cheese and gravy.. i was like  WTF is this crap ? But .. turns out it was darn god too !!.. Chicken poutine is awsome..

Yeah, guess I should posted this in ebike general or something. I dunno, ebike battery would have been right.

Oh, uh... I'll eat a lot of Acadien food, I know a recepie for crocodile, I can give directions using plants as landmarks, eat almost everything with cayenne pepper or tabasco, can pronounce and spell names like Boudreau first shot, etc... But man, I wouldn't eat Acadien poutine by choice, god help me... That stuff's really an acquired taste... Québecois poutine is way nicer... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine

I dunno how much energy it contains exactly, but it's the type of food you get cravings for after digging ditches all day or such. Kinda like pizza with butter on it, and fries and ketchup and mayonaise... Oh, man. But, pizza is unfortunately expensive $/w. Should be pointed out fries in quebec tend to be different from what you'd see in a mc donalds type restaurant, in that you'll see potatoes cut and whitened daily, cooked as needed, tastes like potatoe inside, somewhat crispy with a chip like after taste on the outside... Usually not salted, they don't need it. Curds are salty, like the fires very fresh, say a day or two, so they squeek when you eat 'em... Now that stuff is divine.

But hey in a similar line is spaghetti such as I'm eating at the moment... Cheap, good, lots of energy too (my bro is proof of that, except instead of going for bikes he went to a motorcycle, so it just accumulates...) Though spag, as with ribs, ends up being the same old. So I don't eat it very often.

Second one of these tonite, spag with tomato/meat sauce. Even better with something like parmesan on it, but I was too lazy... Oh well.

Basic spag:

+ a bit of cayenne can be sufficient to perk it up:

= yummy, I did mix it up to avoid hotspots, tho.

Seeing these pic's progression from bowl full, to bowl low, to bowl eaten bit-by-bit, I have to wonder what's coming next ....

OH S***!

I dunno how much energy it contains exactly

You might be able to hook the "drainbrain" up to yourself in such a way that it could measure it somehow. I believe they come with a shunt.

A quick, unchecked calculation gives 1000 watt-hours of energy in 860 food calories -- about one big bowl of Pootine. Sounds about right...the body's conversion is very efficient...

I can reconize the ASHTON restaurant poutine from Quebec... !..

8)

Many people eat that when they went from the nightclub between 2 and 4 am...

It's good for the stomac during sleeping!

About the drainbrain... probably we would need to tel to Justin to add some higher range on watt/h scale for that!

Doc

I dunno how to rate food really, but I know a banana will yeild around 10 kms... or something. And for some reason, when I ride a lot I like fatty foods. But shurely you guys get cravings for other good things no? I still think poutine is the lithium battery of food since so far I've not found better, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Dr bass: I have a 45% rebate at Ashton, so it's an even better deal for me.

Mmmmm... French cuisine.

Mathurin, Heart Attack City my friend! :)

Funnily enough, dey don't put the diet info on their site:
http://www.chez-ashton.com/prod.php?prod=1&subprod=6

Ballpark 700 calories? Probably more? Probably a *lot* more?

I read somewhere once that Lance Armstrong had been "clocked" pumping out 1,000 watts over an hour's "sprint"... That working up a sweat the average guy might pump out 400 watts pedaling? Average guy/trip maybe 200 watts?

And a "food calorie" is actually kilocalorie?

Whatever, this is where I usually start getting this stuff mixed up <grin>

I blame Napoleon!

So from a few years ago:
http://www.cyclingforums.com/t194324-calories-to-watts.html

"1000 kcal/hr = ~ 278 W -- that's quite a hard effort (that's about 42 km/hr for me during a TT)"

So pumpin' hard you might burn up all those poutine calories in under an hour?

Payin' about 11 cents per Kwh for electricity in these parts... what's does that poutine retail for?

:)

Lol.. i was running the dog last night on my folder, without a battery pack.. i look at the Drainbrain and it was reading " Low-Votage " on the display !!!!!

Me = Low-Voltage.

Ypedal's version of the poutine actually reminds me of something we ate at home when we was kids,me Ma called em Knaddle (Lithuanian I think),made the same way with straining the potatoes. The insides could either have meat or fruit in the middle, topped off with white or brown sugar. They sure were tasty...

my god, thatsa hella lotta cayenne on your spaghetti. is that regular cayenne? with regards to food fuel, think everyone basically needs their carbs, protein, fats. (vitamins/minerals) in whatever your favorite food form is.

Holy thread revival Batman!

That is a massive amount of cayenne though. You can tell by the stuff stuck to the condensation on the sides of the tupperwaresque container.

This thread got me in the mood for BBQ !

It's actually warm out tonight for Nov 26th !! +2 celcius !

So, fired up the BBQ, and put on a nice thick piece of Top Sirloin Steak ! With Bulls-Eye Sauce !! Medium-Well done ..

Potatoes and carrots smothered in real Butter ( None of this Becel crap.. ) salt and pepper.. 20 minutes on low, flip every 5 minutes.

With an A&W Root Beer !

:p

Hell.. now i need to pedal ...

After 4 months in the hospital it feels like the best food I've ever had, I could bathe in this stuff. Now if only I could spend the 5kg of energy I've accumulated while hospitalized... But for that I kinda need to wait for my legs to finish self-repairing, if ever.

Right you are, Mr. Daigle!

Hotdog is next on my list of incredibly awesome foods I've been cruelly deprived.

Who says that poutine stuff looks nasty? Looks like chili fries, to me, which are delicious, of course.

As for the Mac-n-Cheese, I put tuna in mine. Shredded chicken is good, too. I dunno why people find this weird. That or the ketchup on French toast thing. :?

I'm philistine when it comes to "biking foods". My ingestion concerns are pretty limited to "Do I have enough water?". :D

Sometimes I find these "ready-to-make" individually-sized Mac-N-Cheese packets sickening to stomach(Not true of regular mac and cheese; maybe it's the lack-of-milk factor?). But they taste good most of the time.

"
Some Canadian comedian calls the Russian prime minister Mr. Poutine hehe"

The first time Bush was running for prez, a Canadian journalist asked Bush if he would make a meeting with Canadian PM Poutine a priority if elected. He proceeded to talk about US's relations with Canada, the "Poutine government" etc.. blahblah....

It was clear that presidential candidate Bush was clueless as to who the Canadian PM was. It was Chretien of course - the "poutine" no doubt being a bit a joke on Chretien too.

Meanwhile back in the USA, such a significant piece of news as a US presidential candidate who cannot even name the PM of Canada was completely ignored. At any rate, USAn's hate the idea of a president who might actually know something about the world anyway. The rest is history...
