I thought it´s time for a new threat about protective clothing / armor.
Please let us know your experience about helmets, jackets, knee protectors, gloves, why you bought them, where you bought them and if they already did their job good or not.

I will start with my helmet, the afx fx-41 which I got on my birthday in september. At Amazon it is available for around 160$. Really nice dual sport helmet with many vents (17). You can switch the visor to a color one which looks more aggressive as it already looks. Has already protected my teeth once when testdriving it offroad on my pedelec at night^^
Here´s a pic of it:

TroyLee helmets for me, lightest that I still trust....and I like light, hate bobble head.
661 are my least trusted...had one split bad off a minor bonk...unsettling.
My head was ok...so i guess it worked...but better helmets have taken worse without as bad of failure.

I stopped wearing gloves since it gets so hot here in Florida. Then I hit a possum (or raccoon, it came out of nowhere) and lost many layers of skin on my palms stopping my slide. Now I once again wear my gloves...

Same here. Wanted to go to piano lesson and didn´t wear my gloves. Crashed on the way and got my fingernail pushed up.

That's all well and good, but does it protect against apple juice attacks?
I don´t know, you have to test it my friend

This is what I use here in Sweden during the harsh winter:

-The Noth Face shell ski jacket (about 700grams). Tested several jackets, this one was the only one that worked for ebiking.

-Peperoni/noname black ski pants with the heavy termal layer. The Noth Face shell pants were too colorfull and actually not as good - to thinn/cold. Pictured Völkl ski pants, as I could not find the Pepperoni picture:

-Non cotton ski underwear/base layer.

-Fleece soft shell jacket.

-Magnum tactical boots, very light (about 700grams/half pair), waterproof and easy to pedal. Choose the ones without the zipper, zipper models are not reliable.

-Long fingered bicycle gloves. Those are comfortable both sommertime and during the winter.

-Ski socks

-Last but most important. The Chinease Military Force Jet Pilot helmet:

- Beon helmet (for you not wanting the apple juice attacks):

Just remember to use syntetic and wool materials, and avoid cotton at all costs. Most of the stuff ordered via aliexpress/ebay.

Any other protectors than just the helmet and the gloves?

I'd recommend knee pads/ shin pads. I came off my ebike about this time last year and took a hole out of my knee. 3 days in hospital, and many months to recover. Still a bit sore/painful at times.

For trail riding where the risk is higher, I would be wearing a light weight chest armour type of thing that includes elbow and arm and shoulder protection.

On my normal trailbike I wear motorcross boots, I will be looking for some "tough sneakers/low cut boot" to ride my ebike with.

I also broke my little finger this year on a mountain bike as I tagged a tree on a single trail. Needless to say I am looking into better gloves with more protection - and trying to avoid trees!

And a good full face helmie with goggles is essential.

Safe riding!

I want this but I do not have one , because it is $ 600 us plus tax = $ 650 US Dollars,

I wish they would make a bicycle version for around $ 150 .

I bought a motorcycle jacket with elbow and shoulder armor. I broke my elbow back in September and am still recovering so I haven't used it yet, and that is also the reason I bought it (I also needed a jacket for warmth, a sweater is enough in CA, but only if you aren't riding 20mph+), for elbow protection just in case I have an e-bike accident again. I wish I had thought of getting one before, rather than after.

To sensibly ride an electric bike, gloves and a bike helmet. The rest according to the weather. In real cold, I favor my insulated overalls, the kind truckers and farmers wear up north. In summer, shorts, closed toe sandals, helmet, no gloves. Even trail riding, I'll run with very little, but add the gloves for the inevitable dive to the gravel.

To ride a racing ebike that goes 50 mph, then it's full race gear. Jacket with the body armor inside, pants with thick knees, stout gloves, boots, DOT helmet. 50 mph laydowns sting!

PSA - y'all realize OP's not mis-spelling "thread" by accident, right?

IMO - Iggy list or play along with (and support) the game(s)...

I'm a big fan of these...
They are cheap, wear like glasses, seal like goggles, and keep the air from drying out my eyes and making them water.
I'm sure there are better versions out there...but this general idea...with the foam seal...

I always wear riding boots, gloves and glasses... And the Iphone.

The Iphone proved a useful protection.
I slide on it when I lay down the bike, happened twice this year.
Saves some skin for a few hundred bucks.

Winter cold coming, I will wear Dickies and a helmet when it goes down below -20
Hopefully, El Nino and global warming will save us a few such days this year. 8)

It all depends on the weather, what I am riding, where and how long I intend to ride, and how hard I intend to push it. I do everything from no protective gear total squid style to basically full leathers with knee protection and full moto helmet. There are pieces of protective gear I really like and others that I don't but I am pretty beat up right now and it is colder so I have been gearing up more. I recently had back to back crashes on pavement 2 days in a row on two different machines and rashed an existing rash. With 5 joints fully scabbed and a hip that is 5 colors it is going to take a while to feel right. :| Will be rocking my hillbilly shorts on all my offroad rides!

Yow, nothing like road rash on your road rash for some delicious pain.

FWIW, my off road crashes rarely result in a rash. At 15 mph or so, its usually a tumble over the bars and rarely a laydown. But street crashes, far more rare, usually are a slide of some kind that grinds away flesh. Definitely don't ride like that unless armored up. Most street riding, just to the store for groceries or such I will not ride in a way that would ever result in a crash.

I have a long history of crashing, some would say I crash a lot. But always, it's been that I decided to ride so a crash got likely. Don't ride like that wearing shorts and a T.

Agreed, Dan. The second and worse of my two recent wipeouts was right in front of my house testing new software on my electric skateboard wiiceiver. Had no intention of pushing the limits, but looking back it was stupid all the same as I was testing it for a possible glitch that had occurred once before.

As for offroad in my part of the country there are hills and mountains with a lot of SHARP rocks. I would far prefer hitting the pavement than many places on our trails. I suppose most of your trails are loose or packed sand?

Pansies. Real men wear tights.
