I've been deciding this over the past few days and want to get your feedback on this topic....

If you had a choice between the two hubs, a puma or a x5304... what would you go for?

At the moment, i'm currently planning to run 48v lifepo4s as a battery pack... however down the track get another 48v lifepo4 (possibly mid year) to go 96v.

here is the option setups...

Option 1:
Solarbbq x5304 kit...

Controller - 36v - 72v 20amp

Option 2:
Team Hybrid Puma Hub Motor (the new kit)
http://www.armybikes.com/pumahubkits.htm
Crystalyte 35a 36v - 72v w/ 4110 FETs

Option 3:
EVTech Puma Hub Motor
http://www.texaselectricbikes.com/catalog/brushless-geared-motor-p-163.html
Controller - 25a controller (unknown origin or volt specs)

It's a fair bit of money to drop which is why I want to be happy with the decision and at the end of the day the motor will be able to survive some real high voltage running through it.

i vote:
1. TH kit
2. Ev TEch - good but wires need upgrading and the controller needs serious upgrading. i'd rather get it all ready to go out of the box.
3. 5304.

only because the weight of the 5304 is INSANE compared to the above two. a lightweight bike would be much nicer -0 running on like 66v would give you great speed (however i do know you're planning on running 96v...)

two pumas is still lighter than ONE 5304!

they are more expensive, but u also get the freewheel. so going down hills means no drag at all - you can peddle fast and not worry about loosing speed due to the motor turning into a regen. This gives you a good advantage (increased efficiency) as does the gear setup.

Go for it - i'm planning a puma motor for my bike once i pay a bit of it off.

Getadirtbike might be able to find you a x5304 closer to home...

To me, Haydon's 408 was more than enough. Pops a mono when you open the throttle, does 55km/h...what more could you want?

It depends on how much power and speed you want. If you're talking 96v of iron phosphate battery, and you use 4110 FETs on a 5304, it will leave a Puma in the dust. If that's what you're looking for, the choice is simple.

A 20 amp controller won't do an X5 justice, and you would be better off with the 35a/Puma combo. Likewise, if you're a weight weenie you probably won't want the X5.

Unless the Puma is running the same batery/controller of course

Nah i'm not a weight weenie :)

If i do go a x5... i will be upgrading the controller to a 50a xlyte 4110 controller. :)

Let me rephrase that. The X5 will leave the Puma in a cloud of it's own smoke if you pump them both with hot rodded controllers. That means 96v/50A like the ones ebikes.ca sells, or more. When I did my 7 second 0-40mph video I think the average power was somewhere in the 6kW range. If one of you guys lucky enough to have a Puma motor would like to make a 0-40mph video, I'd be interested to see how it performs.

The X5 will also happily cruise at 50+mph (on an upright MTB) for as long as your batteries will last. I've done 10 minutes at full throttle with no signs of overheating the motor.

have decided to go with the x5...

spoke to brett at Solarbbq... and he told me to wait till the 15th January :)

I'm looking forward to this.

BiGH... i know its a heavy mofo... but the weight / performance pay off at high voltages is much better.

As much as I like the puma motors... i'm just worried that since its geared, it will have a fair bit of wear and tear. I currently do around 250km trips on a weekly basis so my biggest concern is reliability (which the x5 has proven time and time again) and has the best bang for buck especially at higher voltages.

as for 7 second 0-40mph runs... wow... looking forward to that! :)

well thats cool - i'm considering getting a puma motor regardless - just so i have two motors setup ready to go :) (spares can be good!)
