A wider rim I believe is needed for more contact patch for straight line grip. This is important for motored bikes with a clutch. This however is not important for our low powered ebikes without gears.
The 1.6 rims add a good amount of weight compared to a 1.4 rim. The straight line traction is not needed so having a wider rim is a total waste.
I agree with you about the large tires and I run 17x3.00" shinko 241 tires at 12-14PSI and those were a dream for the heavy hub motor. However, I surely don't need a 1.6" wide rim for those.
SO yes the tire will be more rounded with a 1.4" rim, but I believe that isn't a problem at all as traction is a non issue. Plus with the 1.4" rim you save a large amount of weight in the area which has the most impact on performance, and this is very important for our ebikes.
I already tried to get Holmes hobbies to convert over to the 1.4" rims, but he says he has to sell out his 1.6" first.

I just can´t believe that the 1,6 is heavier than the 1,85. I mean on the 1,6 is way more material in it.. Isn´t it?

The 1.85 is a beast. I think the 1.6 is fine but offroader is right, 1.4 is much lighter. I like the profile of the 3.00 tire on the 1.6.

Also, when you get into wider rims, the selection of the lighter 2-ply tires might be fewer and less desirable. The majority of the wider tires seem to be the heavier 4-ply (from reading, no hands on).
Of course, even if there is only one tire choice available, and it's the type and size you like...nothing else about the rim matters.

Ok I think I will go for the 18"x1,85" one on the rear and 19"x1,6 front. Thank you all for your help.

Hmm maybe it is time for a dedicated tire thread? *Where we could over time collect all needed data, like weight, how many ply each tire has, actual width as that tends to vary a bit from manufacturers. As it stands now the info on tires are scattered over various threads. Would be nice to have one-stop thread for tires.
Anyone up for the task that already has some info to share? If I was to start such a thread without putting anything of value in the first post the thread would get buried pretty quick in this forum, so it would be nice if someone with lots of experience with tire choices would start the thread.

Got my motor today, thanks Vito and the girl with the Hello Kitty smart phone case.
The motor came Fedex in a sturdy box of 1/4'' thick corrugated cardboard with reinforced corners, plastic handles and heavy strapping. Inside was a block of styrofoam formed to the motor. Very good packaging and I can't wait to get this thing on my scooter.

Once place the order, the production time will be much shorter for samples.

Im going for one! 19"x1,6" at the front and 18"x1,85" for the rear. I like the design more and also some people told me that the 1,85" version is lighter. I don´t know why but that´s what they told me..Offroader said:

Even being heavy, it will be ok. I have a 19x1.85 (fuzzy math says about 5% heavier than the 18") and it is not bad. Doesn't tear it up and wheelie quite like my 17"X1.6 but it is perfectly fine for most riding besides the pretty steep stuff. Even then, just get up on the pedals and help it out some and you are generally ok.
