I just spun out my Nine Cont front motor and completely stripped the threading on the axle. Can the axle be replaced and where can I get one if available. Thank you. John Morris

I have a used front 9C axle from a motor I converted to a rear after my rear 9C died. Those motors are pressed together and I had to carefully use heat to take mine apart. You will be surprised how tight that keyed shaft / keyway-ed stator is! Do you have a press or a way of removing the shaft? I used the axle threads to pull mine apart with heavy washers and pipe spacers for a puller.

If you are comfortable using a torch to carefully heat the hub of the stator and have a good nut for the shaft (the flats reduce the ultimate pulling power of the axle nut) you can cut a length of 3/4 inch iron pipe for a spacer to use with heavy flat washers and pull the axle out of the stator. If your threads are messed up this will not work and will require a press to get the old axle out of the hub. I used anti-seize and was still nervous about the stress I was putting on the axle. I only did this because I was determined to get my bike back on the road that weekend. These motors are so inexpensive that paying to have someone replace the axle is probably not cost effective.

You might look into a tap and die kit, and rethreading the axle to a slightly smaller size than it is now. It's metric, so maybe an sae size would be in between two metric sizes. I got away with that on a WE axle once.

Depending on the bike/frame, you could also emulate John in CR's clamping dropouts, which don't appear to need nuts. :) But that will probably require even more tools you don't have to manufacture and install. You'd probably have to get someone else to do the machining, and at that point cheaper to get them to do the axle pressing.

But the clamping dropouts would solve the problem one and for all. ;)

did you strip all the threads on the shaft? why not use a buncha washers to get the nut way out where there are good threads again? or just use a second nut on top of the first?

nono. not the way to go. if the threads are gone, it is not possible to just run a die on it and chase new threads in place.

why can't you post up a picture? if the original threads are still intact on the outside, your only option is to use washers or a second nut on top of the first. it is cheaper to buy another stator than get the axle pressed out and a new one pressed in at a shop.

I'll get the picture asap. I'm thinking of just selling it as-is and get one of the Pumas rear hub being sold on Endless-Sphere.

Anybody do axle's change from rear to front? Possibly there is a video how to do it?
I got my rear 9C hub and considering changing axle and transferring my hub to front.

I may be able to assist you, I have about 12 cores of 9C (front and rear mixed) but they are all burnt windings and such issues but if you can pull the stator and would like one, send me a PM :)

I have done the axle change the other way around and have a front axle left over. Better to get one from MWKeefer and try removing it on a burned out core. I had to carefully use a torch, antiseize on the threads, and several puller tools. I would not do it again considering the low cost of motors.
