Rude comments from lycras. Should we reply?

I just give a thumbs up to all bikers regardless of what kind of wheels or what they say to me. I am too busy trying to get somewhere quickly and safely to worry about it.

The sad truth is that most people are insecure and act like children. Whether it is the pirates vs. power troopers (harley vs. sport bike) rivalry or kitesurfers vs poledancers (sailboarder) on the beach who should be fighting for access together against the grumpy condo owners and Audubon Society morons trying to stop them from having fun. You are always going to have people that are on quite similar machines and should band together for access, safety, etc. and help each other, but instead choose a stupid side in the microcosm they both share a passion and act like full mast boners with a flag flying high whenever given the opportunity.

Motorcycle, scooter, ebike, or pedal bike - we should all be trying to get the people in cars to get off their damn cellphone, put down the fries, and drive! The distracted car driver is our true enemy. Things like cellphones, cup holders, drive through restaurants, and infotainment systems in cars are certain peril to all of us and the morons who can not operate a 2 ton machine and use these things simultaneously. My last car accident I was sitting stopped at a red light and an older man in a jaguar rear ended me at about 30mph because he was trying to drive and light a cigar. I get a little nervous sitting in traffic behind cars at lights exposed on a bike.

+1.. A thumbs up is a good response. It's positive but ambiguous. I'm going to follow your lead on that one.

We call them lycras, but what do they call us? Denims?

Lithies? Oh wait, the thread is about being called cheaters.

A builder of lithium batteries could be called a lithier. (Spin off of the guitar maker: luthier)

First major negative experience with lycras today.

Heavy rain after work, so being an all weather rider/cyclist put all my 'fancy' waterproof gear on (it's just lightweight gore stuff). All the lycras were huddling under bridges and overpasses and at each one they were shouting 'slow down', 'get out the cycle lane' and other angry obscenities!!!

The damn nerve, although admittedly I do use the full 15mph PAS on the cycle lanes and higher 30+ on main roads and roundabouts, no sodding lycra or other cyclist/pedestrian were using the route and if anything, because I know the bike is/can be faster than a 'wizzer' you end up being very conscious of other users around you, instead of blindly hurtling down the route like you own it i.e. wizzer mentality.

Just because the bike is 'visually different' (vector frame) and for (protection) wearing a full face for main road sections (50/50), why the instant, uninformed comments.

The problem is atm e-bikes are in the minority and it's the 'wizzers' who are giving the ebike community a bad name. Maybe they're trying to justify wearing lycra, maybe the 'fitness' excuse come in (ride a mountain bike with flat tyres that'll get you fit instead of your ultra-lightweight, slick tyres, high gear ratio nippers, where braking is mostly an after-thought!!).

You get rivalry with motorcyclists on cruisers to beemers to pocket rockets, but at the end of the day we all help each other, have banter, nod/wave and talk about the experience. The wizzer hostility just seems to be plain ignorance with arrogance flooding past the 'thought to mouth' barrier.

Standard, hydrid, fixie, mountain riders seem more curious and a much more accepting mentality. However, it's the wizzers that are in a more population dense/public environment acting as 'bicycle ambassadors' shouting negative, incorrect information at ebikers in front of the general populous.

Honestly, one 'potential' use for electric bikes is the ease of building a sodding large taser for negative re-enforcement amongst our most ignorant of brethren the 'wizzer'!

Ah I see, it's short for 'whizzy racer'. Whizzy as in fast without due care, maybe a local county thing, but most folk here call them wizzy racers :).

Bumble bee's could be called wizzy, but the 'bumble' gets the point across .

Only if you recognize as a previous offender!

Catch them on a hill, when they are too out of breath to comment ...
Pass by slowly, setting full upright, sipping cup of coffee ...
Pause as if evaluating situation ...
Act concerned ... Say,
"You OK buddy?"
"Gonna make it?
"Not looking so good"
"OK then ... (another coffee sip) ... bye ..."

i was riding trails around my home that i built 25 years ago today ,being a long time mt biker,on my Kranked esuperdrive and some new younger kids,20 somethings stopped me on the trail and gave me weirdness seeing my drive, hahaha,i was telling them where the trails were, haha i live in the mountains and people are coming out from the city ,to ride my trails more and more now.

To negative comments, I reply "I ride for basic transportation and because it's a blast...you should try it. I don't ride for sport, so the idea of cheating if I'm not racing is silly. When mankind comes up with a more efficient form of transportation I'll try that too. In the meantime, I hope you aren't suggesting that I should drive a steel box instead, spewing smoke, using a phone, and trying to run over you."

If they take the bait and try to say that bicycles are the most efficient, I respond with "Yeah, modern bicycles are incredibly efficient machines, but electric bikes, ebikes, come out ahead by at least a factor of 4. Even the most fit body runs at efficiency not much better than 30%, and the food to power it is an expensive energy source. Electricity OTOH is cheap and clean. Add in that my ebike's motor runs at over 90% peak efficiency, and it's not even close."

I hit the extensive local trail system in town today, for the first time. I was on my BBSHD fatbike, and fairly stealthy. This was my first outing where I'd be mixing with other trail rider and I was a little apprehensive as to what kind of reception I'd get. One guy (one only) noticed I was on an e bike, and all he said was "how's that working out for you?" He sounded interested..... Further up, I came upon another guy, in his early 30's looked like, and he was standing over the bike and staring down at the ground. Only as I got nearer did I realized he was gasping for air/taking a break, as we had just came through what they call "heart attack hill", I was in PAS 1, maybe 2, and continued on by him at a realistic speed for a normal bike, and I'm 66, 67 next month. That blew him away, all I saw as I went by was him looking at me with his mouth hanging open and sweat pouring off him. "Great day eh?!" That was all I had time to say to him. I was very careful to keep my speed down to a regular bike level, I was on my best behavior! The major difference was I could just keep going. Up at the days turnaround point, I finally looked down to see what gear I was in, I had thought I was in 2 nd, I was in 4th! The Bullet just romped up there, it was a blast and so far no friction at all with the other trail users, including a lot of hikers. The total lack of any noise from the drive system is so cool.

To date, the last 20 years anyway, my bike riding has been airplane related, meaning once I fly somewhere the Montague gets me around. I didn't recreational ride other times, now I am, and a lot. I'm also pedaling more. Thus, my first trail riding in town at what is becoming a well known trail system, and I now see why, it was a blast and best of all in the shade most of the time. BUT, it was an easy ride, not much of a challenge at all! I could have also easily done it in half the time or less.

Awesome!

Sigh.. they can be such d'heads. Some just don't get it. I /we are riding ebikes as an alternative to driving. I used to race road and track at a reasonable level so I'm allowed to say that they can be tools!! I still ride in Lycra and cleats cause it's comfy and efficient. Some are just elitist dicks. However having said this, i gave a young very fit roadie a draft the other day, he accepted my offer with an air of disdain. I sat on about 45(kph) for a few k's along a nasty windy section of road. He was working, so was I ( with my backpack of work gear) I lost him on an incline, picked him up again and soon we were slowed by road works. He pulled alongside to express his amazement and enthusiasm for my machine, we got talking about range speed benefits drawbacks etc. He was like " dude you wouldn't need a car" my job was done, A+ to the young fella. I really appreciated his acceptance and the link he'd made ...soon thereafter I was at work so we went our seperate ways.
There is hope that this attitude will pass, as the lyrcas get used to being passed they'll calm down hopefully. Well they had better get used to it... Ebikes are here to stay.

Good job Kdog. The only thing missing was an offer to let him take a quick spin. The EV grin every first timer gets is what really hooks them, because talk with logic and reason is soon forgotten, but not the feel of the first ebike ride.
