Share Information on "E-Bike Friendly" Local Bike Shops

sorry, I just thought it rather presumptous of me to enter some business's name without their approval.

Ebikes.ca is awesome to deal with! I have ordered from the online store and it all gets shiped instantly!

yeah for sure they should be on there. We're working on adding Canada now. But this is even more for local bike shops that are willing to work on e-bikes. I'm pretty sure Renaissance fits into that category also.
Yup they work on bikes and for me they are as local as it gets!

The link didn't work for me (e-bikedealers.com), but when I typed in www.e-bikedealers.com, that did work.

There is an e-bike dealer here in San Diego called mybikecommute.net. Yes, they have a website too (how did you guess?), and a store in the UTC mall at 4425 La Jolla Village Dr, a mile or two west of the Miramar Air Station. They had a dozen e-bikes there when I went there, along with the usual pedal-only "regular" bikes. The salesman was very enthusiastic about the e-bikes, and very helpful, let me ride a couple of them all the way around the mall, etc.

Most of the e-bikes he had, were from San Diego Electric Bikes (www.sdelectricbike.com). Patrick at sdelectricbike.com is tremendously enthusiatic and knowledgable, I think he runs his enterprise out of his home, converting bikes to electric power. He loves Aotema hubmotors and swears by them for their reliability, and is working on a controller which he hopes will not have the chronic problems many controllers have.

Black Mountain Bicycles on Black Mountain Rd. in San Diego, presently has no electric bikes, but the owner (Brian) told me he will be selling the Trek line with their Bionx motors, as soon as they are available in quantity. Brian says these will be far and away the most reliable complete bikes on the market. Brian has sold electric bikes before, he mentioned the Giant brand, which he said was fairly good while they were available. He is very enthusiastic for e-bikes, but says there are a lot of them around that are junk. He absolutely does not want to sell any e-bikes that are going to come back numerous times for repair or replacement of parts, batteries every month, etc. He points out that some customers will abuse their bikes, sometimes unknowingly, and the bikes have to be able to stand up to that abuse. I got the impression he was not interested in converting bikes in his shop, though I could be wrong about that.

I'll see if I can put mybikecommute.net into that dealers website, and maybe San Diego Electric Bikes too though he does not have a storefront. And Black Mountain Bikes when they get some e-bikes.

Excellent Little-Acorn. Good info! Both are now on the map. Thank you.
I just put them there. Uh-oh, did we duplicate our efforts?

You know, Wal-mart sells the EZIP and I-Zip lines. Mostly small-motor bikes with SLA batteries, but at $300 for a COMPLETE ebike, wow. Should we list every Wal-mart in this website? :)

And Walmart also has a slightly-higher-line ebike, the I-Zip "Urban Cruiser" with what they called a "high capacity" NiMH battery, $1,200.

I have to agree with leaving off Wal-Mart. If you have a problem with anything, their only answer will be "bring in the bike and receipt for a refund". Nobody there would know how to use a multimeter, or basic trouble-shooting procedures. I occasionally buy something there, but they are not a bike shop that will help with assembling a kit for a reasonable fee, or answering any questions.

Jason,

this is a great idea and I hope it gets some traction.

I go and poke and prod two of Lbshops in town. Neither receptive. Though one is softening somewhat.

I'll go talk up the third and see what he has to say.

I'd put my name on the map, but I'm over-committed as is.

More and more people around me seem to be catching the bug though.

thanks,
Joe

Added an LBS I had known about but had not talked about Ebikes to them before.

http://www.bluestarbrewing.com/bikes/index.html

They specialize in Electra townie bikes and have not done any electric conversions but they were very receptive when I asked if they could lace a hub motor or two for me. Jimbo was very enthusiastic once I explained what I wanted and was very confident about his wheel building skills.

Oh, and the best part, they are next door to a very good restaurant/bar that is a microbrewery. So you can take a bike in to be tuned and grab a brew while you wait!

I have used Revolution Cycles in North Seattle for two ebike kit installs. They were very accommodating and did a great job on my steel Surly fork replacement after proving the brittleness of my previous Mg alloy suspension fork. If you need an ebike kit installed in the greater Seattle area I would take it to Revolution Cycles. I have had bad luck with another bike repair store found near Greenlake(you know who you are). I think that they seriously overcharged me because it was an ebike.
