I am thinking of starting a website, that addresses the need for poor folks, to have nice bikes. If you start with less than the bleeding edge, recent generation components, and especially if they are carved up on spots, they can be made into better components than you could EVEN buy. Indeed, many GREAT components are SIMPLY better finishing of lesser components.

So, you take your carved up say XTR derailleur. And you use your bench grinder, scotch wheel, then dremel, then light touch scotch brite wheel again, one that is used on buffer bench grinder. Then, sanding with fine ISH sandpaper. then, coarse scotch brite pad by hand. Then, if you enjoy a DIFFUSE smooth, sexy, expensive looking finish, STOP THERE.

To do so, is to make your components good for life, able to be fixed to fresh in seconds. So, for instance, if you did this to a wear surface, like the face of your cranks, then as you rescuff, just break out your coarse scotch brite pad, and in seconds, it is good as new.

IFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF, you choose to go the next step, it takes about two minutes, and again, you can do this FOREVER, to have gleaming, beautiful parts, finer, better, lighter, and more expensive looking than the best you can buy.

The next step, is Semichrome polish. And it is fast. The finish I support, is a DARK, luxurious finish, not gawdy and garish, like HIGH gleam alloy.

So, we know how to make our parts AWESOME LOOKING for life. JEWELRY really. BUT, what to remove?

All materials that have no bearing on strength go first. Then, you swoop things, to remove stuff that is in the middle, and is overbuilt. Then, you remove materials that surround platforms that support bearings, shafts and such, leaving the maximum surface area to do so. When you are done, it is DEAD ASS SEXY, as form following function is pure PORN, to a geek.

So, which parts to perform this engineering masturbation to? The GOOD ONES. The upscale ones that had a LOT of engineering into their function.

Go on CRAIGS, or EBAY, and get the ones that are hacked up, but newish in appearance. YOU CAN HAVE YOUR WAY WITH THEM negotiating, like TRUMP university salesmen.

I for instance, will pick up an XTR 8 speed derailleur, for nine bucks SHIPPED. After I hack on it, and polish it up, it will look like a BEAUtique piece.

Indeed, MANY stock pieces make the BEST custom parts.

For an example of what I am talking about, I own an R1 1000cc rocket. I removed 65 lbs, and made the suspension CUSHY. I am not NUTZ enough to carve my stock wheels for instance, so I negotiated for some Cheaply stolen craigs FORGED aluminum wheels.

But, most other parts are carved from stock or stocklike parts. OFTEN, they are forged, and are of a higher quality than you could even get after market, and often, there ISNT even anything available aftermarket.

AND, ALLLLLLLLLLLLL stock parts fit. GENIUS.

And, you KNOW the Stock parts are OVERBUILT, with BEANCOUNTERS in mind.

LOL, I am doing the same to my ebike build. It will be, in Trump speak, very special. I generally find about 20% SAFE material to remove.

Due to mfg concerns, many simply cost, there is extra materials. I am a moldmaker, process engineer, jig and fixture, toolmaker, product designer, cad cam programmer.

So, for me to spot extra materials is second nature.

The motorcycle was a basket case. Gotten cheaply, polished, till all scratches are gone, or replaced. Racing bodywork. All bracketry, doodads and trinkets removed.

All edges FEMINIZED. All shapes FUNKY SCHWAY. Maintain the STOCK reliability. HAve lighter than aftermarket parts.

In essense, I have been using the same formula since my PRE café resurgence KH400 roadrace bike. Modify to even fit, or just massage stock or racing parts.

Its fun and it is the FOOSE crap you gloat over, when a build is finished.

OK kiddies, here is the candy.

This derailleur was ugly, but perfect. Now it is dainty and pretty.

Couldn't get all of it when it was sprung, so now I will spot polish.

This shows some polish to the cassette, and the brake line going thru the chainstay.

I have a strong tendency to do the exact opposite.

I buy the most expansive components, and put a lot of effort into getting them dirty, scratched and worn out.

I've found that in many places I've lived, pretty parts (whether cheap or high-quality) often get stolen. Once you "ugly up" something...you almost never need to lock it up.

I see an interesting combination of high intelligence and productive insanity in this user.

And that's a bizarre swingarm on the Marin.

I disagree. When EVERY stinkin part is CUSTOM, in a highly traceable way, it is a trap vehicle. It makes darn near every part not saleable.

Don't worry. I don't scratch components to discourage thieves. I ride 10 to 15 K miles per year, on and off road, all weather, hard and fast. A few crashes in mountain trails every summer, making all components age bad.

The bike thieves here are not stealing my unlocked bikes, not because they are scratched but because they have a reputation. It is well known around, that my bikes are made to kill those who try riding them.

OK, I have decided to make the XTR Derailleur my SIGNATURE piece.

What that means, is I was insane. I used INORDINATE amounts of time, to do a MUCH more thorough POLISH, than Anyone has EVER done, on this or any other planet.

Folks, this is the WORLDS finest finished XTR Myadda yadda that has ever existed. AND, the worlds LIGHTEST. GUARANTEED.

So, Drum roll please.

And, another glamour shot.

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq128/Gmanr1/P3260057.jpg

To be clear, this is an XTR, that is drop dead gorgeous, AND, is 15ish percent lighter, with full function and strength. AND, it is vintage, and a perfect period piece, for my UPSCALE retro build. FOR TEN BUCKS, and sweat equity.

And the next exciting adventure in hacking components, to make GREAT ones, I got mad at my rear shifter. I busted it in two.

THEN, I shoved them together, to make the mount INLINE. Then, I JB welded it. It now is PERFECT. The upshift, is nestled in the brake lever. It forms a cove, or harbor. I will further hack the carbon lever, to make the upshift foolproof. It looks the business. It is sleek. I hacked the whole indicator window off, and hacked back the pointer. Then, I hacked the area, to make it sleek, beautiful and inset nicely. JUST LIKE SHIMANO should have to start with.

I will later, superglue the window on. For now, I am THINKING. How I want to mark the speeds. I will get pics tomorrow.

SERIOUSLY, it is perfect. The downshift is even better placed. The window is large, square to your eye in riding position.

And, it is curved and Funky Shway.

I will blow some minds.

I will make them "pretty" soon as I get my rubber bungee tubing. Then, I will fit that over bars. let dry. Then, fit Silicone grips, over that. It will be PLUSH. Soes I can remove the mount.

And, here are the pics.

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq128/Gmanr1/P4010069.jpg

And the next exciting adventure in weight weenie ghetto mods. Fork weight. My mod cost about three bucks, and saves you the screw, star nut combo. A ebay Chinese fork cap, and you save a bundle. MOAR than choosing the MOST expensive fork. My carbon cap was 1.50 sent.

So, you get a piece of threadall. Two nuts, and two fender washers. When you adjust your stack, or loosen your stem, reuse. Tighten and go enjoy your weight savings. END of lesson.

AND, Shorten stem, and use riser handlebar and/or stem.

Replace your stack with carbon, or hollowed out aluminum ones.

This also allows you to utilize the stem for storage, like monies, patches and goop, etc. This is the TRICK mod to the racers rig I was reading about.

To add, you COULD grind the inside dia of the fork stem, that exits the frame head. It is WAY overbuilt, to take the simple mass of YOU.

PHOTBUCKET SUCKS. They have deleted most of my pics, and many others too. Is it the Russians? Trump? Were my pics illegally UNMASKED?

This is treason.
