Hey yall. Its about to Mardi Gras time here, and I would love to ride around before parades and blast some ZZ Top or whatever. Is there such thing as a 48VDC amplifier that I can plug a iPod into and run some small speakers? I aint looking to feel the bass with 18" woofers, just maybe two or so 4" speakers. Thanks yall.

4 cell lifepo4 battery, or maybe just a 3S lipo pack will power some 12V devices pretty well. You can gut a boombox or use a small stereo amp or used car stereo to do this job.
If you're okay with subpar audio, i have one of these cheapo music bullets, it works well, louder than my laptop, a bit better bass, and super compact / light.

We've got one of the ebikes.ca stereo's at the shop. It's tiny and awesome with it's wide input voltage range.
It pumps an amazing amount of sound out at just a few watts. We generally have it on around 1-2W average.
The price didn't bother me, it's a nice hand made product well built for a specific task.
Otherwise as suggested, buying a DC-DC converter or a small lipo pack for 12v output will let you power car audio equipment. Cheaper overall though probably less efficient and less compact.

I bought a motorcycle 12v stereo system. I've had it for 1 1/2 years and no complaints. The one I bought is with the 2" bullet speakers. It draws a modest amount of electric. Beyond 15mph the sound deminishes due to wind in the ears. I play it a lot and am glad I got it. Converters are available at reasonable prices. Once you have a converter you can power all that you'll need. Headlight, tail light. I added a ram mount that safely cradles my iphone to access 150 albums. Car stereo on 12v would be one way. Provided you had the input jack. But a boom box of some kind is likely to be your cheapest option. Especially if you find one with an input jack at a garage sale. Or use one of those cassete adapters to imput an ipod into an old, cheap boombox. Another option would be powered computer speakers. Look for some that have a wall wart powering them with 12v, or just get lipo that's the same voltage as whatever it's wallwart provides.
For something nice, and permanent, no way to beat the device from Grin.

Me too... that's my sound system for my ebike... earphones plugged into my iPod. 
The sound is fantastic using high quality noise isolation, in-the-ear earphones like the $100 Klipsch S4's. I crank up the volume, the wind noise disappears and the sound imaging stays perfect no matter which way I turn my head. :wink:

Headphones and earphones can be dangerous, especially the ones w/ active noise-canceling, and it might be (/usually is) illegal to wear them while piloting a vehicle. :|

Yea I have wondered that - if I wear them it's just the right one so my left ear can hear traffic etc..

I'd go with an older boombox-- the kind where you can detach the speakers. DC-DC convert to the required voltage and you're set. If it doesn't have a line-in or aux-in for your portable music player, you can use one of those cassette adapters for cars.
Powered multimedia speakers would work just as well.

All I hear is wind while I'm riding. I have worn earbuds when riding slow enough to not have wind in the ears. Set it low, and you can still hear cars coming. But that's when riding 15 mph.
