Special Needs Bikes

I don't have any particular connection to this company, but I've seen one or two of these hand-powered recumbent-like trikes around:

They seem to sell a variety of handicapped accessible bikes, addons, & accessories.

I personally think an attachment for a wheelchair that would turn a regular chair into a handcycle (or an e-trike) would be a great idea, although perhaps technically challenging.

Good luck on this venture!

I don't have any special needs (keep your snark to yourself ;) ) but I still want one of these (electrified, natch) for me & the gf:

My 62 year old brother, after getting me into riding longer distances, motivating me to get the recumbent bike, and planning a cross country ride for this spring, had a severe stroke last fall. He can currently walk very slow with a cane, and will probably never have much use of his left arm.

So, I got a used delta trike for him, set it up with a dual brake lever so both front and rear brakes work from the right hand brake lever, and added turn signals and brake lights. He hasn't been allowed to have the trike yet, but he's about ready for it. He is currently using a little trainer with his own clipless pedals, which we will put on the trike so that his left foot won't slip off the pedal.

Anyway, he is very excited about getting to ride the trike, and his biking friends want to be there when he takes his first ride. :D He was always hard core pedal only, so I don't know if he'll ever let me add an electric assist.

This guy just started a company to do that. He has some great ideas, can't elaborate due to non-disclosure. I will be doing the motorizing and electronics.

Here is one of my favorites, the Quadribent: http://www.blackbirdbikes.com/quadribent.htm

You can find EZ-1 recumbents used for cheap (or buy two new ones). You then buy the Quadribent kit and yoke the two bikes together when you want to ride with the special needs person. Otherwise, you can leave the two bikes apart and you have two recumbent bikes at your disposal.

On the same web page, there's also a motor solicited for one or both of the EZ-1 recumbents.
