Hi,

I'm lost and need some guidance. Could someone tell me exactly what motor, controller etc to buy if I want to make an ebike to at least keep up with my buddy's stealth bomber on street only riding? I don't need the crazy 50mile battery capacity, but 20km distance is good enough, but with the same (or close to the same) performance as the bomber? I won't use LIPO's... will a 72v ping suffice for this type of setup ??

Kevin

Oh yes, painfully fun question. Because I KNOW you're hoping to come in way under budget as compared to what your friend spent.

What creates Stealth Bomber magic?

5304/5405 crystallite motor - http://www.electricbike.com/crystalyte-hub-motor/ Yeah, you wanna play, you gotta play. But MAYBE you can get away with http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=53119 Under $1k for the kit once it's shipped. http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1138310936/High_power_3000w_electric_bike_conversion.html

Now, your friend is sporting a 72v 20a battery. This kit offers "48v 29Ah li-mn or 48v 20Ah LiFepo4 battery" as a choice. 29a sounds better than 20a, but LiFepo4 sounds best of all. (No, I'm not over my fear of Lithium yet, but. . . .) If you want to run at 72v 20a, you can discuss that battery when you order, I'm getting the idea these guys will customize, as those in the thread suggest. Of course that would put a few hundred on the price.

Now, do you have any money left? You might like the Raptor frame kit. http://www.torquebikes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=109&Itemid=236 I guess you'd top $2k by the time it's shipped to you. http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48089 Or maybe you have the skills to put your own together. If you want to build, you've come to the right place. Oh yeah, we have frame building threads around here. http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51847&hilit=frame+build

I like the sound of letting the kit price top $1k to get the 72v/1500 watt battery, then you build your own frame with some old bike. I'm sure it would run under $2k total if you don't go for niceties. Durability might come into question depending on the donor bike, but for the time being I'd expect you to hang in there with your friend.

If you're not ready to go $2k yet, maybe you can start out at $400 on some old Walmart bike you have. This will mean allowing some latitude on what you consider "Keeping up." http://www.yescomusa.com/Brushless_Electric_Bicycle_Engine-_48v_1000w_Rear_Wheel_Hub_Motor_Kit.html I'm sure there could be some other similar kits people around here prefer and will recommend.

I'm surprised you haven't captured any imaginations yet, this is normally a popular sort of discussion. Maybe people who think they have better ideas than I posted will go ahead and respond after reading this.

I suggest the warp series frame by greyborg, but I am biased. I have a build thread going with pics... Need to add about 20 more. I hope to be riding it under pedal power this weekend. Maybe even electric power.

wow, they steal my picture - this beautiful Crystalyte laced radially in RED 20'' rim is MINE!!!!

For motors you have couple of options but i guess Xlyte 54xx or The Crown and the obvious Cromotor V3 are pretty best....

I say go lipo.

Hobby king turnigy blue pack 40c 6s x 3 (x2 parallel)
Lyen/infinion controller 18x 4110 fets controller
Bc168 to balance the lipo
BMS bulk charger
Cell monitor alarms
H4060 crystalyte motor
5 speed freewheel
cyclye analyst v3
Specialized bikes have shit loads of suspension but any dual sus MTB with disc brake will do for street.
Get a programmer cord for controller so you can up the amps.
Use the cycle analyst to stop the motor over heating.

You'll need better than 2-3 c ping to run at high amps.

So you are looking at a smaller lipo (lico) pack and saving money on the size, or getting a very big pack of 2c something else.

If you are on a budget, then consider something that won't "keep up", but will be fun to ride anyway. Get a cheap dd kit with a 30 amps controller and a faster winding, and run it on 48v of lico. For less than a thou, you should be flying along at 30 mph.

If in the USA, it's the Yes 48v 1000w kit. If you keep it short at that speed, you can hop that up to 40 mph with a 72v controller.

Otherwise, it's mo money, to get a 5400, Cromotor, or some kind of 5000w motor.

Since it's for the street why settle for similar performance when performance that laughs at the Bomber in every street category is easy for less. No wonder you keep trying new rigs.

Thanks for all the info! ... well my wife has me on a $5000 budget which I hope is enough... and I only have one shot at this so if I buy the wrong stuff im outta' luck! ...
The stealth uses the 5403 motor right?? What controller does it use? Does anyone know? I'm looking for a plug and play type system in terms of the motor/controller. Something I can just plug into whichever battery I finally decide on and ride .. and don't want to worry about overheating etc...

Bomber equivalent and 5K you said?

The expectation that DIY is cheaper is all too common. If you do your accounting right (ie. ignore: time, mistakes, reliability issues, etc) you can totally do it!
Along with the $5k budget, how much time has your wife allocated you for this project? :?

I keep saying: "Next time I'll just buy a factory bike. They have time and money to conduct all kinds of testing and R&D that I can't afford."
but alas...

Shhh! Don't discourage him.

You have to remember the time often is what people have. They don't have a way to use the time to make the kind of money to pay for a new one.

I don't see you naming these alternatives.

Zombiess Greyborg thread, by the way. http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=53986

You can do it for pocket change if you have a strong stomach. Think of the PROBLEMS they solve for you with that more expensive equipment. And the reputable dealers that sell it.

Not that the cheaper stuff WILL break quickly, or the dealers you try to buy from will be crooked, it's just that you don't know.
