Posted this in the hack a stromer thread, but its in the photo/video section, which I doubt anyone looks at. Just need someone to talk me down from the ledge before I ruin things.
I just picked up a 500w hub motor that I thought was cheap and was going to use it for my son's bike. Unfortunately for me, its from a Stromer and had wires coming out the side which weren't your typical halls, phase wires- which made me think it had a built in controller. I figured I'd find out later. The guy had four of them and didn't know anything about them. Well, after reading through this thread, I don't know if I'm up for re-using it. I don't have a Stromer display to even check things out. Checking NYCE the display sells for like $250. So I'm either reselling it or tearing it apart like you did and using an external controller.
Is there any possible way to hook up a throttle and power to this with the existing wiring to check if the controller works? I believe the losi connector goes to the torque sensor(edit - meant brakes). Coming from the motor there are two wires with 3 connections, one of them female and one male. Lastly there is a 5 prong connector. I think that is it. I was thinking the 5 prong was the halls, one of the 3 was phase and the other possibly power. That was before I found it had a controller inside.
Any thoughts? Anyone need a TDCM 500w hub motor?
Thanks for posting all the pictures - it will help if I decide to dig into this.

I since stripped the coverings to find a power wire with a red, black and yellow wire. The torque sensor has three wires. The five prong is likely the display wire. The losi connector is likely brakes.

A few more questions -

Is it possible to use this built in controller without a display unit? I think I read about someone not using a BBS02 display, but don't know how you would get into changing settings and such. If not, anyone with an extra display?

What would the extra yellow wire on a power plug do? I know that the controllers on my Razor stuff has three wires, two of them + and one ground. Should I try the motor with the yellow wire and red connected? From pictures, the Stromer has a key switch and I think that the yellow wire might have something to do with the lock.

The torque sensor has three wires, can I hook up my throttle to those? They should be +, - and signal to the controller, correct?

Any help would be much appreciated. So much for finding a good deal. Not immune to pulling the hub apart and going sensorless. I would actually like a reason to purchase a VESC to try and use as a bike controller. It would be great just to get the original controller working though. I don't think I'm up for trying to figure out the Halls on this!

FWIW, with the matching battery that is a monster strong motor/system. Their cheapest bike is 4k and thought of as the "Mercedes" of E bikes. Big, heavy, strong as hell.
It's a great motor (assuming it's a new model, I don't know about their old stuff) and well worth springing for a display
