It seems likely it exists because it's an evolutionarily selected trait that would increase a group's cohesiveness which boosted an individual's chance of survival and reproduction within that given group. Back in the day, not being a part of a group meant certain death in the wilderness, so any "group promoting" traits surely flourished which I seem to see ample evidence of today and throughout history.

But considering how poorly controlled the dosage of any illegally manufactured substance can be, and that it can be lethal in quantities less than one milligram, I think I'll stand my my original statement.
