Thoughts on this setup.(updated)

What about trails? I was kinda hoping it would be a dual-sport. I’m willing to modify if I have to to make it work.

You will be ok with trails but if you are sat down and hit any reasonable lump or pot hole then at 20mph it will bottom out (100 kg rider)
Try the rcp first.

Note to self "You fat bugger  "

Are you saying that it can’t handle very rocky trails? That’s ok, and I’d say I’m a little on the heavy side (90kg).

It just won't handle it at speed - Ive knackered 3 of them and 3 is time to try something else

I think I’ll take your advice. I’ll try out the RCP and if it doesn’t work I can upgrade to a more sturdy shock. Thanks! By the way, how were you able to mount the bigger shock? What did you modify?

Both top and bottom brackets need altering, 2 or 3 hours with some steel plate, a grinder, a welder and some paint :p

That doesn’t sound too bad. If the RCP bottoms out a lot, I’ll switch it. Does your ebay pit bike shock work well?

Yup - it's a keeper :D

Thought I would share a progress picture. Here is the 750lb spring and my QS 273 and new mud stoppers finally fitted (finally found ones I like). It's moving alone slowly but surely.

It’s looking good! What else do you have to do?

Still waiting on the battery pack and a few other items, which worked out ok, as life got a bit busy with restrictions easing up; I’ve decided once I get the battery and a bunch of cheapo accessories to finish it off as my headlights, pedals and crank items won’t arrive for a little longer as got held up in shipping.

Nice. It’s always fun to get some cool accessories. Keep us posted in the thread with progress.

Finally got some more work done tonight before the cold got too much. Fingers crossed, I’ll finish the rest off and be able to test ride it tomorrow evening.

Except for once I mounted everything I now have an error everytime I turn the wheel (Frustrating as it boots up fine, the controller isn’t giving any errors but the TFT is telling me 40H hall sensor everytime I turn the wheel). So much for a test ride. I got the battery made directly from a contact in changzou no web presence sadly. Really impressed after testing it. No sag and they supplied the BMS with it. Did a full cycle down and charge up and everything is perfect, so will be using them again for my next project too.

Then the controller *is* giving you an error, because that's where the information on the TFT comes from. ;)

A hall sensor error (or any other problem) is almost always wiring or connections.

What was changed on the bike from the time it worked, to the time it didn't?

Adjusted the pads on the tektro sensor front brakes, is the only real change aside from cable sorting taping and the like.

The thing I found weird was the control doesn’t see an error.

Pulled all the wiring out and checked the connectors, might have to de-glue the connector (added too much to the back of the plug to unplug it) and try the spare hall connector tomorrow.

I’m sure it’s something really obvious but it’s really got me stumped why the controller doesn’t show an error on boot up but gives a 40H hall sensor error if I move the bike, if I keep it stationary (no error) i can apply the throttle for a short bust before the motor disengages with a click and then gives the same error.

Bit bummed it didn’t pan out for today, hopefully I can figure out what the heck tomorrow.

My guess from seeing this kind of problem many times over decades, is that something became unseated, pulled loose, or a wire broken at the back of a contact, or there is a spread contact in a connector so that when taping wires they changed the angle the wire pulls at the contact, and so doesn't make contact (or not full contact) anymore.

But whatever it is, it almost certainly has to do with whatever was done to the system from the time it worked to the time it didn't. ;)

It does, if you get an error on the display, it comes from the controller.

The fact that moving the wheel triggers the error, without the display being directly connected to the motor, means that the controller is seeing a problem, generating the error, and sending it to the display.

It probably doesn't boot with an error because it doesn't have a changing hall pattern until the wheel is moved, so there's nothing for it to detect as a problem.

Got the multimeter our, hall sensor had gone, swapped it out and finally got a test ride done today.

Man that felt good. Hill climbing dream regardless of the surface, even the hail couldn’t stop my smile, was amazing to go down tracks I haven’t been able to visit since my hit and run.

Here’s a picture of my break.

Also posted the return trip elevation details as well. Need to make some adjustments to the handlebars and the lights (as well as reducing the amount of boost on throttle, because holy crap) but total dream to ride. These 4 piston hydronic brakes are insanely effective And the perfect combo for this power ratio.

I'd buy a sur-ron instead
I did look at that option and while they look great, the performance is still not quite up to scratch speed wise, also it’s double the amount that I’m spending

It's gonna weigh a tonne, won't offroad well, won't look like a bicycle on the road, and won't be as cheap as you think it will be

There's still ways to do the build you want to do but qs273 on trails/offroad isn't it

For others looking to build something like this, after using this as both my primary vehicle and climbing tracks my dirt bike couldnt'. I pleased to say it off roads well, blends in enough that I haven't had trouble on bike tracks from others, worked out way cheaper and the weight was great for my liking, having ridden heavier down hill bike previously the extra couple of KGs wasn't noticeable.

Thought I would add this as it might be helpful to others with their decision making.
