My hall effect throttle wire got cut the other day, and this resulted in the sensor chip being destroyed. I searched here on the forum, and even on google with not much luck finding repair info on hall throttle repair. Since I don't like to throw stuff out that can be used or repaired, I took the throttle apart and checked out the chip being used. I figured this might interest other people so I decided to post this about replacing the hall element...

Please note that the hall sensors used in throttles are not the same as the ones used in brushless motors, since the ones in throttles need to have a linear (continous) response to magnetic fields.

The number I found on the hall in my throttle is 3503, and a quick search revealed that this is an Allegro 3503 linear hall sensor, but is now discontinued. The replacement part is the Allegro A1302, and costs only 1.44$ canadian at digikey (Allegro A1302) - better than 20 bucks or so for a new thottle!

I will order the replacement and post my results here in a week or so when I get the part.

So did the new Allegro A1302 hall sensor work for you ZapPat?

I've also got a throttle with a hall sensor which needs replacing (broken legs  ). Voltage on the signal wire was 0.7V to 4.5V. Just wondering if this part will work. Hoping it will.

Thanks.

Yes, it works very well, just the same as the original!

This part is also great for making custom throttle setups, since a hall throttle is pretty simple. Just take two small magnets and one steel or iron metal strip along with the allegro A1302, and you have a hall based throttle. The output of the chip varies with the position between the north and south poles of the magnetetic strip setup.

I am going to make a brake level style throttle for controlling regen in an analog way. All On/Off style regen sucks IMO, so I want one of my brake levers to essentially become an analog electronic brake lever, and leave the other one mecanical.

Nice one, thanks for the quick reply. I'll be ordering a few of these hall sensors myself.

The progressive regen brake lever mod sounds well interesting. What controller are you going to try that on? The Ecrazyman infinion? I'm sure it's not just me who hopes you get that to work.

All the best, and thanks again.

dnmun, follow the link in ZapPat's first post in this thread (digi-key part no. 620-1022-ND). From the datasheet the dimensions are a tad bigger than the original in my throttle but I'm sure I'll be able to get it in there, it's only 4mm across.

Hi guys, regarding hall effect throttles, I have ordered some off EBAY..
He goes under the name of "BITSBOX" :
They work a treat and have been used by me to repair a couple of them..
They only cost £1:30p each and he has just started stocking them over the last 3 weeks..
UK Based by the way..
He DELIVERS the NEXT DAY, to my way of thinking he is the best..
Really nice bloke to email too.
Tell him Colin:Wisbech: Put you on to him he will know what you are talking about then,
I have really blown his mind with asking for stuff, and he always has come up trumps..
Colin.

Regards getting the 1/2 twist grip type throttle apart - is there a trick to it? I've undone the two little screws on the side case but no luck seperating the bits.

Cool thread - Uncool that my throttle just died taking my only mode of transportation down :(

Anyways - Got a new throttled ordered but would like to repair the old one.

Only problem is the allegro out of stock from any reputable US sellers.....

Oh well.... I'll guess I'll wait a month to have 10x of them shipped to me from Asia.

P.M. if any one needs one of these Allegro a1302 hall sensors!

you may be able to repair your throttle if the magnet has come loose. this is pretty common, just glue it back where it was originally if it broke free. you can use the honeywell SS495 ratiometric hall sensor too.

Nah---- the magnet is mounted firmly still. I don't know what caused it to fail. It just wasn't responding in the morning... good thing it's spring break!

I ordered some of the honeywell hall sensors from digikey as well. Thanks again Dennis!
