Through Axle Dropouts...

Searched about the Forum about 20mm Through Axles on Rearside.
But found not the Answer iam searching for...

i want to build a downhill bike, but most of these (newer)bikes have a 20mm through axle....
Is there a way to "cut" the dropouts for a HubMotor?!
 
Might look at Mad Rhino's build threads. I think he's got some through axle stuff, but not sure if it's rear.

He's the man here for high end FS bikes. I just know the cheap stuff.
 
The best way is to make a torque arm that sits in the through axle dropout and then provides another slot to accept the axle. It slightly changes the axle mounting point, but it is negligible. I've seen some very sophisticated setups (And I think Dogman is alluding to the same) that also have holes for changing the location of the brake caliper as well.

i want to use a 4080 xlyte.
 
The 20 mm thru axle is in the front. They went from the wimpy 9 mm quick release axle, for cross country, which allows the fork to flex, to the beefy 20 mm, for downhill, to a little lighter, less beefy 15 mm, for trail bikes, all mountain, or free ride.

In the rear the most common is a 10 mm (135 mm wide) quick release, for cross country, the downhill bikes usually use a 12 mm thru axle (150 mm wide), there is now also a 142 mm wide 12 mm thru axle, for all mountain, to further the confusion.
 
12 or 20mm is not the important part ;)

it has a through axle and a hub motor dont like through axles :mrgreen:
i have no idea what kind of TA i can "build" that a motor fits a 12/20mm axle

Wouldn't the first thing you need be that at least one of the rear dropouts is a bolted on type?

If you can't take the swingarm apart somehow, you'd never get the axle through the holes without cutting a notch them.

Once notched, you could then do something with custom torque plates to hold the motor axle.

IMO, this calls for fabricating a rear swing arm for it that works with your hubmotor rather than cut notches.

they would have to be custom and require a fair amount of work...but this would also allow you to change the bike back to the original wheel if you ever desired!

That looks really cool. It should be perfect for a downhill geometry frame who is performed for riding downhill.
With this 3-4cm higher swingarm it will be nice on Road, Uphill and "normal" users ;)

But to build without CNC Machine seems to be impossible :(
 
i have heard of people getting custom pieces ordered from the internet from CAD models they make...this is a possibility. another option would be cutting the pieces with an angle grinder. then drilling holes to put the pins. im actually working on something like this as well...i will post pictures when i make progress.
 
Merlin, I couldn't find the thread, but jansevr hooked you up with the same thing I was thinking about. Kiwi makes a bunch of stuff on here (off an on), maybe you can commission him.

i think this droupout is the easiest.....just replace the whole part with a torque arm.
the funny part...i had this bike allready 2 years ago where i dont have any knowing about ebikes ;)

If clearance to your front wheel is a problem, this center mount fabrication worked well for me. Its a standard rear seat luggage rack-reversed.

Cheap Chinese bag that comes with most e-bay kits. I'll make a proper fiberglass box-next winter.
 
that was my original intent-thus the space- but I mis-measured and it didn't fit. The wires have since been tidied up. Things hang loose and temporary in the early stages while you work out the bugs.
