Thumb throttle

Hi. I recently got a new bike the BPM Imports f-15rs. Like the bike so far but the thumb throttle seems to only be on or off. There’s no gradual throttle control and makes it hard to use smoothly. Tricky to use especially when I’m on the beach. Does anyone know if there’s a way to change this or perhaps get a different throttle controller? The bike has a bafang 1000w hub motor.

Hello, I've just gone through this very scenario. I had a thumb throttle that was either on or off. I changed to a half twist throttle, to make room for a lighting control, and I realized something. Now, with the new throttle, I am able to gradually increase speeds. I now have this "range", instead of either all or nothing. This leads me to believe that the limitation is isolated to the throttle type/build, and not the controller.

Another note, I spoke to a friend about this very thing I noticed after I replaced my throttle. He mentioned that his thumb throttle has a gradual range, just like my half twist.

This is the throttle I purchased

Which thumb throttle do you have?

I like to use this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32990537714.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.21ef1802lmTyDJ

I don't use my thumb though. It comes with the option of left and right. I put the left in the right side of the handlebar and the right to the left. This allows me to do a pulling action with my index finger. I'm running a a lot more power than 1000w and I feel I get better controller from it.

Good old Cycle Analyst could also fix your problem.

This is the type that I changed from.

I didn't like the extra space that it would take up on the handlebars.

Sounds like there was something wrong with the original throttle; possibly a magnet come loose or glued in in the wrong position, or the hall sensor itself mispositioned inside, or even that the hall sensor used was the wrong kind (digital output (like a common motor sensor) instead of analog (like a common throttle sensor))

I've had some thumb throttles that look just like the aliexpress one you linked, and they all operate "normally", with a valid range of output voltage (typically around 1v to 4v, can be lower or higher by a small amount). So that type *can* be normally responsive, even if the one you had wasn't.

FWIW, the best response I have gotten is using a cable operated throttle, controlled from an ATV thumb throttle unit (would also work the same with a grip throttle, but I don't work well with those). WHen used with the CYcle Analyst v3, its' even better because I can tune both the input range (to match the actual throttle's values) and the output range (to match the actual controller's response levels) to get the "perfect match" between the two.

Some good pics of the cable-operated throttle unit here:

using it with a brake lever for variable regen braking (for controllers that support that)
LInks to it and the ATV lever I used here

Agree with others that said you should try a new or different throttle. I never had one act up like that, but I did have a few that did not work quite right.
