I haven't read anything about these units ever being tried on e-bikes

i would think this would make a nice transmission for a bike.

anyone know if an electric motor (like a 1000watt) can handle this unit ?

I've got one on my emoto. It works okay I guess. I took the springs off of the drive pulley weights, so it has immediate engagement, but that also makes it noisy at low speeds as the centrifugal weights bang around a bit. Regarding efficiency, Comet has brought these CVT's along from the old days, and I seem to remember 92% as the efficiency number. WRT to use on an ebike, it's just not practical. It's heavy and takes up a lot of real estate. Plus I don't see it doing much for you unless you've got some monster steep hills to climb, but then the gearing range of 3:1 or so isn't going to be enough anyway.
