Hi,

I've just bought a new motor (36v rear bafang bpm 500W) and plan to fit it to my 2007 hard tail (if you're from the UK: A Carrera Kraken) which I suspect has an aluminum frame because a magnet doesn't stick to it.

The question is, do you think I should bother with a torque arm on this setup ?

always always always use torque arms, what's the point in not? get the ebikes.ca rear TAs. go for dual TAs if you have some extra $$.

YES.

Even if the motor is low enough power to not really need it, one fine day a nut gets a millionth of a turn loose, and then you absolutely must have a torque arm. Cut wires on the motor would be the minimum damage, but often when the cut wire shorts, it blows your controller. Plus whatever broken collarbones cost perhaps.

Running without the torque arm might be playing russian roulette with 1000 empty chambers and one full, but who wants to take even a 1 in 1000 chance?

Unless you know she's safe to ride, use protection. That applies to Women and Ebikes.

The best explanation I've ever heard lol

Agreed - good insurance policy for little $$
I have a nice Cromo Steel Frame and running 48V1000W motor with only a 48V LIFEPO4 - although I likely don't need it, makes me feel a little more protected...

Here's a Torque arm fitted to a Carera Kraken. The torque arm is a BMSBattery one that's very cheap and you can get it the same time as the motor. You have to drill an extra hole to fix it to the disc mount. The steel is so hard that you need a cabalt drill to drill it, which you can get from Ebay. If you have a look round this folder, there's a few photos that might give you some ideas. If you can't see the whole photo, press "Ctrl" and "-":

Dude, I have one on both sides... on both wheels!

You have only one opportunity to screw up your frame - and then it's worthless, so why go there?

perfect, thanks d8veh ! I did order a couple of torque arms with the motor (from BMSBattery too) and before starting this thread searched for the above photo but couldn't find it (I guess my google skills are lacking ). I knocked off most of the mud around the rear caliper last night and could see that putting the TA there would work a treat, next thing I know you've posted a picture of it in this thread :). Thanks for the heads up on the drill bit, that'll be my next purchase then...
