using magura throttles

I just wanted to double check this wiring -

EDIT: a 1k resistor probably isn't enough. Best bet is to use a 2k pot and tune it so their is no dead zone.

Also check out how I got a normal sized grip on the oversized throttle.

I put it in a glass and let hot water run over. Then I wrenched it down. It took a lot of force! My arms are gonna be sore. I also used a fair bit of lube.

To get a grip off you use a air gun

The wiring looks right, but I can't vouch for the colors on your controller. If you find there is too much 'dead band' at the bottom end, you could increase the resistor to something like 1.2k or use a 2k pot there. By dead band, I mean you advance the throttle and nothing happens until you reach a point where it starts going. If you just hook up the Magura with no resistors, it will work, but you'll have to advance the throttle quite a ways before the motor starts.

I use rubbing alcohol as a lube for grips.

Just for reference, here are the colors on the Magura wires:

Where do you increase the resistor? The 5v positive side or the ground side? Proly the ground side hu?

I was shooting for voltage ranges between 1.1v and 4.2v for my current lyen controller.... at 1.1v it's the slowest speed, and 4.2v is the fastest speed right? It scales linearly right?

So I put the resistors in...

As far as dead area, I pulled the throttle apart and advanced the gears in there manually. A bit of a pain to put everything back together and get it to line up right! However I think I got it now.... my 72v test controller is putting out 4.5v from a 48v pack... so the throttle is at .7v at no throttle and 3.7v at WOT. I hope when I test it on my new controller it will be running at a full 5v and it'll land right on the 1v-4.2v range.

I made a short little article for my site about modding these to work with hall sensor controllers https://sites.google.com/site/shelbyelectro/electro-tech/magura-throttle

I'm by no means an expert, but it answers all the questions I had about doing this.

Does anyone just use these stock and simply rotate the pot to get the range they want? It seems like it might work, but I'm not sure the ranges would end up right.

I use a 5K variable resistor on both ends of the Magura. Then you can adjust both ends without taking the Magura apart. I don't recommend fiddling with the gearing or springs, they are good out of the box.

edit update - I put 5K trimpots in series with each end, similar to the first article in this thread. Then adjusted them for minimum deadband at both ends of the throttle, so it just goes off at release, and it just reaches max at the other end. Perfect! The Magura feels great and I'm very happy with it... :D :D

2K might work also, 5K was what I found at Frys that day...

What is it about the Magura throttle that folks like?

the Magura is a quality product that feels more like a real motorcycle throttle than a kids toy...I have had 1 china hall throtlle last me more than 3 weeks....I just bought my 2nd magura...the original is 2 years old & still working fine after crashing, getting dropping & all the general abuse off roading will dish out.

I have broken the hall throttles on the bench just by letting them snap shut under their own spring tension...never again.

There is no compairison in feel or durabilty.

Yup... I've only had it for a bit, but the difference is night and day. Crisp and responsive. Plus it looks legit. 8)

I have not tried this, but I would use a 2K variable resistor on both ends of the pot. Then you can adjust both ends without taking the Magura apart.

It's really not that hard to adjust the sprocket inside of the throttle once you figure out how to put it back together with the spring in it. I WAS wondering about how important the voltage range was, and I wish I could flash the MCU to change it to the current range I have. (.7v-3.5v) It seems to work fine though; barely any dead space from stop to start and it hits full speed. Lyen said:

Pushing the all the way to 4.2v will not necessary improve the speed since this is a digital device.

I guess he means that the control sees that 3.5v is all the throttle is putting out, and interprets it as WOT.

Very cool. As for the grips i would assume that a motorcycle throttle side grip(larger id same od for fitting over throttle tube) should fit these perfect as magura also makes replacement cable opp throttles for dirt bikes. Also had a look at your site, looks good.

Yeah but motorcycle throttles don't come in bright green :D

I purchased a set of motorcycle grips few days back hoping i will get the throttle grip over my magura easily. Shall wait and see i guess...

re: wiring... I run my Magura with a 12fet Infineon i found a 1k resistor on the Magura blue wire and a 3k resistor on the black eliminates all dead spots, works perfect.

Hope this helps.

YES they do,got some on my dirt bike, they also come in pink and purple and yellow or you can go sport bike grip and gettum two toned.

Quick question - Besides the better quality is there any other advantage to the pot throttle over a hall type? Wondering if i could use the guts from a hall in one of my spare throttle assemblies?

Don't know if it's necessary but i think i found a replacement for you if those ever need changing. The color looks pretty close and they're reasonably cheap too Bike bandit has them for $10.00. AJ those grips you linked to are sick, gonna look awesome on your chopper.

Cheers i thought they were ok for 13 bucks :) Come in assortment of colours also not
puke green though LoL..

It's grass cutting green :D
BTW I like the anodized look on the grips - it's sure to make your bike faster

@auraslip - Thanks for this information. Saved my time for asking some question! :D

Just use motorcycle grips instead of bicycle ones. The throttle side grip will have a larger ID to accommodate the throttle tube. Or is the magura tube larger than standard?? I have one but I haven't changed the grip yet.

When you wire the Magura into a servo tester for RC use, can the pot on the tester be used as a Cruise Control feature? For instance, the Magura is at rest, can you just twist the servo tester pot to any throttle setting still?

Good info Auraslip!

Right, any wattage will be fine.
I recently set up one using 1.5k resistors and it came out very close to 1-4v output (what most controllers are looking for).

old topic i know. but i hate those kids plastic throttles and iam searching for a qualtiy nice one...
seems to be the magura is the only one at this time..

with my cycle analyst v3 i can setup dead zones for any throttle.....

does anybody know i can use a ca3 with the magura throttle?

Both real Ourys and fake Ourys turn into sticky boogers with a quickness. I've used 'em a couple of times, but no more for me.
