We got quite a diverse crowd on here, hoping someone knows something about this...

Got my house 6 years ago ( man.. time goes by fast.. ) and 2 years into it i found this in the basement.. it was tucked up in the floor joists..

It had a tag on it that said " To Jim Steeves from xxx " .. can't remember the name but the tag had a store names on it ( i know i still have it somewhere. but can't find it.. ) .. the other side it was written in pen " Walking Stick " .. house is aprox 60 years old..

Is this a halloween item, or an actual walking stick ?.. feels like glass so i can't imagine wanting to use it as such, fragile !?..

looks like the world's biggest crackpipe to me.. lol

Don't encourage him :p

Looks more like a 'prop' as you say possibly for a halloween get up or fancy dress parte'? curious
what appears on the 'bulb' to be charring? or is that just dirt? Quick Google
reveals glass walking sticks aren't uncommon

Ypedal;
That stick has the classic shape of a mace. A ceremonial or military stick carried by the Drum Major. If I was you, I would dig around trying to find one similar before doing anything. Find the oldest vet in your area and ask him?

looks to be lead-based glass.
Well, it's too old to be LiPo-based. :p

57 inches? that's only 3 inches short of 6 feet long! I have seen a walking stick that looks a bit like that one, with two layers of glass "woven" around each other, but it was barely three feet long, so I'm not certain that this one is what it was labelled, or at least, not the traditional kind.

At 57 inches long, that makes it what, 1 or 2 inches in diameter along most of it's length?

The one I saw was an antique of unknown origin and date, but claimed to be at least a hundred years old at the time (early 90s), being used as part of a costume by a member of the SCA (though not for an SCA costume). But it was very similar in appearance/style to the one you have, though it was "fancier", with what appeared to be quite-worn patterned engravings on the bulbous end of it (whcih seemed to be almost solid, rather than a bubble), and a similar sharper engraving following one of the glass bands down the tube. It had a brass-looking endcap meeting the floor, with cork underneath the brass, between it and the glass.

I was always afraid they were going to break it, but it was apparently a lot stronger than it looked, as they actually did lean on it now and then, though not intentionally or probably with full weight on it.

Thats what she said.

Uh...that must be the new math. 60 inches is only 5 feet.

Uh, yeah, I have said that I'm not great with math or numbers, haven't I?

Where's the shotgun?

Is the tapered end finished or open? That may bring us closer to an answer....

So did they used to fit a rubber foot on the bottom for use or what? Maybe the fragility of the cane was how you showed your baller status.
