Before lotteries added the powerball function, the odds of winning some of these 6 number lotteries were so low that the prize would rise to numbers lower than it starts at after a winner today, and that was more than the ticket sales would be for the drawing. So there were companies that would go to buy every number in that drawing, as long as it was the only winner they made a profit, as well as having 5 of 6, 4 of 6, etc. today that's close to $600 million for Power Ball and over $600 million for Mega Number.
Right now I'm amazed that people spend up to $50 for a scratcher ticket that in seconds they realize they blew $50, but won't bother to enter the 2nd chance drawing that'll give them that 50 entries to win some $100,000 in prizes, up to $25,000. You go to the gas station and they're laying around. It looks like people blow several hundred dollars in one trip to the pump.
Last Christmas a relative didn't know what to get people, so we all got a bunch of those tickets. Mine proved the most profitable, but dang if everyone would have come out ahead if, you know. . . .
So I collected all the losing tickets and told him he should enter the 2nd chance. I'm not from that state. He couldn't be bothered. Me scratches HEAD, not tickets. But if I had at least known that I could win even if I was out of state, I guess I'd have entered free, right?
