I attended this tonight

and as luck would have it, my tire went flat as I arrived. Found a nail straight in, dead center. :( :(

So what's the best 26" on-road tire/tube combo that is puncture resistant?

Well even though I have this tire, I haven't driven over nails or anything to confirm its puncture-resistance... but the Schwalbe "Marathon Supreme" is a wide road tire that's supposed to be highly puncture-resistant. I ordered mine online from a small bike shop in New Hampshire since they happened to sell them in 700x50 size, a rarity. 26x2.00 is also available among other sizes. They might not be in stock though.

I run the specalized armadilo (not the light) range of tyres on my road bike and mountain (and soon to be electric bike).

Never had a puncture since i converted to them. this includes riding over broken glass etc. They are more heavy than a normal tyre, but have kevlar belts to stop punctures.

Nails are bad tho - there are not a lot of tyres that will stop a nail if it hits in the right place - ie the sidewall. ( i realise urs hit dead center - this may have been ok).

just look for something that has a kevlar bead in it, but my preference is the specalised all condition armadilo (23x700c for road bike)
and the armadilo slick tyre (forget the model) 1.5 x 26" for mountain

Nothing will stop a nail. Buy a pump, puncture repair kit and patch the tube.

I carry one of these: http://www.rei.com/product/605151 plus an el cheapo patch kit to suppliment the patches in the survival gearbox.

Patched the tube, threw in a tuffy strip for good measure and spent some extra time rebalancing the wheel. Then I did what I should have done to start with, which is cut the stupid strip to length like they tell you not to do on the box
After that it balanced up nicely, and no loading the wheel at 124km/h produces no vibration of any sort. In fact if you were deaf, blind, and couldn't feel the wind created by the spokes, you'd never be able to tell the wheel was spinning at all, it's that smooth now. While I was at it, I balanced the front wheel which needed a few grams of lead.
