What is lost in a ESC controller?

In looking at some of the controllers for common motors for ebikes I haven noticed things like regenerative braking and cruise control. If i choose to install an ESC controller will I have any of these options? What is the trade off here?

rc esc have no regen or crusie control capabilities at all, and IMHO regen is pointless on a bicyle anyway, the amount
you 'put back' into the pack is minuscule and you give up the ability to freely coast...just my opinion
