What kind of helmet do you use?

For the people who must ride in the rode as I will. I would highly recommend this helmet. DOT approved. Its motocross style so you have full head to chin protection. Goggles to keep road bugs and grime out of your eyes and gloves to help you out in the cool weather or if you have to lay the bike down. 54$ shipped. Great value I think

It will fit over a tuque.

No prob there, I scored my ghetto mx gear for about that. If you're not picky and shop closeout deals you can find stuff for about the same cost from mail order retailers.

That is really cheap!

Another option if you have a little more dough is bikebandit's closeouts.. $35 answer lid, $30 for msr goggles/gloves. Bonus is they are branded items from a reputable retailer so you have recourse if they somehow fail.

The newest hard-shell Nutcase bandanna print was a raffle prize and the only one I've seen other people wearing.
It's a skater type pot to replace a previous skater pot. It also draws comments because of the graphics.
Nutcase makes fun helmets.

Bicycle helmets that are little more than shrink wrapped styrofoam are great for the majority of riders since they never need them.
A toque offers protection against most of the head injuries cited by the scare mongers, data sifters, legislators, lobbyists and manufacturers.

i got me one of them "blackdanas" as nutcase calls them . nice lid i like it. got a few comments on that one in summer dropping the boys at school.

edit . i added my own pics. one for syle one for speed.

That Borg guy...

Grey Borg?

Are you the one with a full face, motocross/downhill helmet?
Do you get a lot of stares by people? Any harassment? Bothered by cops? Cops usually look for things out of place.

I heard about a guy (mountain biking) had a nasty crash off a cliff, and was wearing a full-face. The e.r. doc said the only reason he was alive was because of that type of helmet, a regular lance armstrong style helmet would have resulted in fatality.

Mostly anywhere, when someone gets into a car, their iq points drop by 25%, 50% in some cases. They also develop vision problems, selectively not seeing any two wheeled vehicle on the road. This is why such a helmet would come in handy.

Just got a 3/4 motorcycle helmet with pull-down face shield yesterday. Haven't even used it yet. It was cheap, but should be stronger than a good bicycle helmet, and help keep the rain out of my eyes.

Anybody know where to get a dirt bike helmet?

If by dirtbike helmet you mean DOT motorcycle, you can get last-year graphics closeouts from online retailers for cheap. I'm talking brand new for $30. I guess motoXers are a fashionable bunch? Why take a chance on a smelly, unknown history used helmet when new is so afforable? I'm all for used stuff, but not helmets yoo.. It can be close to impossible to tell if a helmet has been damaged.

The downside to DOT's is the extra weight and less cooling vents compared with a bicycle specific full-face helmet. I have NEVER seen those go for as cheap as the DOT ones though.

Here.. this would fit me. A quick 1min. search came up with this among others for around $30.. http://www.bikebandit.com/sparx-d-07-core-full-face-helmet

Yes, I meant new and unused, and DOT approved helmets. I am referring to the motocross/dirt bike styled versions that have a chin and jaw guard (nose).

I intend on purchasing new, definitely new, and not taking chances on a used, for safety, hygiene, and olfactory reasons.

What's a helmet?

Good point Little-Acorn! Its the thing you will never know you needed if you go off your bike at 20 mph and flip. Mine cracked along with 6 ribs but since I had the helmet (Walmart one) I can still remember the accident. I apparently hit my head hard enuf to crack the helmet (but not my head!) Sorry I know you are kidding (?) but I am kinda sensitive about head injuries (or any other kind for that matter)!

Mine is an all black shoei.

It's the ultimate in comfort, and protection.

Many other fullface helmets feel sufficating and akward, these feel as natural as the skin on your face (at least to me.)

I've been KO'd in a wreck with one on, but I've never sustained as much as a scratch or bruise on my head in so many wrecks wearing a shoei full face.

Also extremely important is gloves. Bike gloves are made to help prevent blisters from riding, they offer ZERO protection in falls on asphault.

My hands used to always get ripped up when I wore bicycling or dirtbike gloves on the street. I got a set of superbike gloves, and I've never had another scratch on my hands.

Hey AJ! I like the leather hair style!

Shoei? Seriously liveforphysics? Is this for your ebike or your motorcycle? Or is your ebike a full-speed motorcycle?
How fast is your ebike?

I would probably get too many stares with a full-speed DOT approved motorcycle helmet. I was only thinking of getting a DOT dirtbike/motocross helmet.

Even the DOT dirtbike stuff is a bit much! Back before I had any bicycle helmets I wore my Arai superbike helmet on my ebike once. ONCE. You are correct about the stares, stares galore.. If you have the cash get a DH bicycle fully. If not, a hotter heavier discounted DOT would do, but its not ideal IMO.

yeah, i thought about it some

those dot helmets are meant for really high speed crashes

might be a bit overkill

the dh helmets are still good, they are meant for intense crashes too right?

e.g. going off a 10 foot drop and landing on a rock, etc...

pulling the front brakes too hard and crashing into a tree, etc...
