before the 2 ESCs threw 8 in flames from them he runs ~18hp of Turnigy Outrunners fed with lipos ... Hes aiming for 100mph e-bike so yeah, he needs more than a piddly bicycle helmet... full racing leathers back protector and boots wouldnt be a bad idea either Luke LoL..

"If you've got a $2 head, buy a $2 helmet" was good advice given to me years ago as a kid buying my 1st dirt bike helmet. About 12 months later i was knocked unconcious, cracked ribs etc after my DT200R landed on me from looping it out on a near vertical rock face climb section. I came too about 10mins later thanking my lucky stars i - A. had a helmet on and B. had bought a middle of the range / reasonable quality helmet and didn't go hunting for bargain cheapys.... :roll:

hahaa cheers mate...I want to make it clear to members though this is NOT the helmet i use for everyday riding ONLY when filming for YouTube etc. It is not much better protection wise than no helmet at all, but it does get peoples attention LoL

I think a downhill full face is what ill be getting next along with some quality gloves knee and elbow guards for when i decide to have a blat rather than a gentle cruise to the local shops on the cycle path.

I dont recall paying under ~300 dollars for a helmet when riding motorcycles though, always buy the best you can afford is the advice i would give.

A few days ago I saw a bloke riding past the local shops on a DH mtn bike, wearing a DH full face helmet. Didn't look that odd, although I think it would have looked funny if he was riding a road bike.

I think a motorcycle helmet would be noticeably larger than that, and stand out more. Probably heavier - how would weights compare, motorcycle full-face vs DH full-face?
 
you can still get some decent helmets for $200 and below

DOT and SNELL, and some, the fit is good

Logic would lead one to believe the downhill helmet would be considerably lighter due to the rider
having to propel himself rather than a motor PLUS the speeds attained on a bicycle are far less than a motorcycle
so they could 'skimp' somewhat on the construction but still have a very effective
helmet for downhill use, havent seen no downhillers drop bikes at 200 plus Kilometers an hour yet LoL

...just a guess though...

So on ebikes we go faster than most normal bicyclists do. I makes sense to me that we might need some additional protection.
One thing I immediately thought of were skiing and snowboard helmets. Typically these would be designed to higher than bicycle speeds and have lots of coverage.

Anyone used ski or snowboard helmets on a ebike? Are they too hot?

Other recommendations for a helmet better than my 15 year old bell?

I've tried to search for specific recommendations, but every helmet thread I find has turned into a long winded discussion if they do any good. That or about helmet law.

I figure if those helmets can handle hitting a jagged rock at decent speed they should be ok at handling an impact with flat pavement.
I suppose if you are still looking for more protection without sacrificing ventilation your next step up would be to look into getting a motocross helmet.

I would stay away from the snowboard/ski helmets due to heat build-up. Also I dont think they would be designed for rough coarse pavement.
 
I wear a snowboard helmet in winter, for the earmuffs that are in it. You can remove em in the summe and make it a bit cooler, but here in the desert I barely want to wear a regular vented bike helmet in summer. Just depends on the climate. The boarding helmet is obviously made of more stiff material than the bike helmet, but I couldn't say if it protects more or not. The snowboarder is expected to ride into a tree though, and speeds of 50 mph are easy to reach. The bike helmets have come a long way since they appeared in the 80's, and are designed to blow to pieces in a bad impact which actually lowers the g loading of the skull like crush zones in cars. A motorcycle helmet does the same thing, but is designed for 50 mph rather than 25. So maybe the motorcycle helmet for 50 mph, bike helmet for 25mph, and snowboard or DH helmet for 30-40 mph?

Bottom line, the worst bike helmet beats the crap outa no helmet. I should have photographed the one my head crushed into a curb. Saved my ass for sure. Huge dent in the side of the helmet.
 
I usually wear a Bell X-Ray bicycle type Helmet for most of my 20 MPH rides on the electric stand-up scooter because it is smart, legally required here in California and most of my riding is done in fairly warm weather. But more and more I am starting to think it would be wiser to wear my BMX full face or better yet a Motocross style full face Helmet when I ride. The cost is more, but how do you put a price on your head and face :wink:

I really like the Arai XD-3 Dual Sport Helmets because they are well vented, have a built in fullface shield for colder weather riding that can also flip up under the peak for warmer weather. But they are a bit pricey at $400-$700.
 
E-bikes are definitely breaking into the motorcycle helmet territory now with the speeds that some of us ride.... :mrgreen: I use a modular motorcycle helmet (HJC) that you can flip up so your face is exposed (and cool) if you're not going very quick.

Has a really cool integrated sun visor. But its heavy, and utterly un-vented. I can't imagine pedaling with it on in the summer.

No.

Most if not all major Helmet manufactures whether it be for bicycles or Motorcycles do extensive aerodynamic testing inside a wind tunnel to get the most aerodynamic design. Butt....any Helmets main function is for HEAD PROTECTION first in the event of a fall or crash, so aerodynamics is secondary.
 
I decided to upgrade to a full face helmet right before I electrified my ride. I found this at Walmart:

It's a Bell Sports Exodus Full-Face Youth Helmet according to the Walmart website. Seems pretty sturdy and says it's CPSC and ASTM Downhill certified so should be good for moderate to fast bike speeds but not motorcycle speed.

It appears that they only make it in one size so if it don't fit you are SOL. Luckily it was a perfect fit for me.

We'll see how comfy it is once it starts getting hot here. :shock:

How do you know they do wind tunnel testing? I am only curious because my guess was that most of them don't do it. Also, I don't think it would jeopardize safety to have an aerodynamic helmet. You can retain the original shell and add just add on some some shapely styrofoam, with a thin, hard plastic skin. I have beef with helmets in general. They could be much better, in my opinion.
 
My guess is they figure the rider is so unaero that the helmet doesn't much matter in the scheme of things, which is probably true in most cases. :)
 
I just switched from a cycling helmet (lots of vents, soft shell) to a pryme multi-purpose helmet for ebiking.

The new helmet is hardshell, and covers the back of my head. The disadvantage of far less ventilation matters a lot less on the ebike, as I am running faster with less effort. I'm not ready to go full face, as I don't really want to go more than 40-45kph in any case. I know for impact the foam matters more than the hard shell, but i have to think the shell would help for any sharp edges (think curbs, rocks, etc.)

That helmet looks very nice and lightweight (or is the carbon fibre pattern just for shows?).
How's ventilation?

I got some google results that the earlier Warp II had been available in the US for about $240-260. However web links to those sites were broken.

Anyone knows where to buy the Warp II or III? Or a siomilar light helmet with a flip down visor?
I wear glasses, but my glasses are small so I think they could work under even a pretty tight fitting visor.

I'd start by painting any dark coloured helmet to be white or silver... wattever, to reflect as much light/heat as possible
