Hi guy's,

So the local cash converters (pawn shop) has a used ASEAKO 250W TOURNEY for sale for $800 currently.

I'm semi interested in it, but am not really sure what it's really worth. I only got a quick look today and it appears the rear shock might be dead, or at least out of air, so I can leverage that in bargaining them down.
I have no idea on the battery state, and likely can't really test it, but saw it was the 10Ah version.

The bike as a whole appears in ok condition, but I think I would probably not be interested until it got below $600 and then I can hopefully talk them down to less than $500, but these things tend to move fast.

So what's one of these really worth? Anyone got any insight on these bikes?

I would obviously be juicing it up a bit and have plenty of spare parts from my other builds I could re-purpose towards this bike, but would stick with the provided parts to begin with. If I bought it, I might try oil cooling the motor and pushing ~1000W through it. :D

Cheers

So does anyone have any idea's on the real worth of this bike?

I found a couple of video reviews of the bike that make it seem like it might be ok.

I'm thinking I might be able to oil cool the motor...or maybe try some Ferro Fluid in it. :)

The battery and controller are likely not going to much use long term and will need to be replaced, but I will make do with them until I finish up some of my other projects.

Is the silence from others an indication I should avoid this bike as it's a piece of trash?

Cheers

The frame is nice, so its worth $100. The rest of it, I'd give $50 for. Noisy ass old school cheap mid drive. Used battery, as always, worth zero dollars until proven capacity.

Really, seriously, $200 max.

Just be aware they area unique motor drive with a unique frame mounting.
Very difficult to mix other parts/ drives with that set up if anything fails.
I seem to remember the crank freewheel was not too reliable on them
There is a thread on those "Tonaro" drive bike somewhere.

Thanks guy's, that brings me back down to reality. :)

$200 USD is about $285 Aud, so I reckon if they won't do $300 or less I should give it a miss.

Knowing me, I would push way too much power through the motor and destroy it. As I don't have any fabrication skills, I wouldn't be able to mount another mid drive, so it would be wasted.

Cheers

I had a similar bike I paid 50 bucks for. At 250w it blew controllers all the time. I gave it away and the new owner quickly fried the motor with a larger controller.

There is a reason that type of mid drive didn't catch on.

Thanks Dogman. Yeah, I think your right.

I'm just itching to get/try a mid drive MTB. Having only owned/ridden hub motor driven E-Bikes so far, I don't feel I have a fair enough appreciation of mid drives and feel the need to branch out.
Hopefully another opportunity arises at some stage, but I will give this one a miss.

Cheers

My uncle has the 250w and the 500w 'extreme' version which he paid around $2000 with a shimano Alfine hub from the factory. He'a added an additional battery pack to come road cycling with me / changed the shock & forks / replaced tyres / runs a larger front ring / added a micro switch to cut power when changed gears. With the 2 10000mah packs he can do 80-90km range and can maintain 40kmhr + on the flats with bursts up to 50kmhr + when he puts effort in. He weighs ~90kg and I'm always surprised how cool the motor runs. He also has the 250w version but the 500w version has a lot more punch.

He's had to replace the crank freewheel (bearing shot) and the charger. These were sent free of charge from the vendor. The vendor was always very helpful and knowledgeable and he was always impressed with his level of service (by phone) . The 500w runs around 22amps from memory. I remember him saying the pin holding the worm gear on the motor was a weak point . Contact the vendor and ask him about modifications. I contiplated buying one , I think there great value ( extreme version ) but the geometry and suspension isn't really suited for what I do / off road . Ive rode it plenty of times but personally prefer a hub. The throttle is very on / off.

Cool he never blew controllers. That could be simply the way he rode it, combined with a better quality controller on that model.

Mine blew controllers because the type of controller could not handle the amp spikes if you started out in high gear without pedaling.

But isn't that a noisy bike? Mine was ( A ford think) but it wasn't the Aseako. Same type motor drive though with the worm gear.

NOTHING wrong with getting that bike cheap. Just paying a lot was what I objected to.

The 2016 generation of mid drives are SWEET. The newer versions of bafang, and really nice, the Bosh and Shimano mid drives. One type I liked more than I expected to. I forget the name now, it was a large crank with the motor built in, so much quieter than all the other mid drives that use a gear or chain. That one did have a bit of a goofy look though.

I'm sure the controller is different on the extreme model - have to confirm that. I know its a 48v / 13s pack and the controller is set at 22amps. Never any issues with the controller. I started in tall gears many times. The motor / drive unit are near silent.

Yes, some great innovations coming out!! Exciting stuff
