Another idea is to position barbed fish hooks fixed around the handle grips.

Another is to have a remote control mechanism that breaks the fork apart above the wheel. You sit hidden and observe. When the thief takes the bike, you let him get up some speed. Then you press the button.

And then with how our goofy ass laws work, he turns around and sues you for personal injury. Sometimes I swear our legal system is a joke. I mean where else can a criminal break into someones home, injure themselves, and then sue the homeowner.

I've lost two bikes in six months. Both were locked up...one, even with two locks. Total, total bummer and expensive learning process. Now have massively heavy On-guard chain and D lock, along with larger D-titanium....I figure whatever it takes to keep a bike is what it's worth. But for the most part...I insist on taking it into stores or anywhere I go, or I'm not shopping there. It's such a disheartening thing to realize that so many people are utterly shameless and blameless about their lives as thieves...zero remorse.
One bike was stolen within twenty minutes of it's maiden voyage into town (the one locked up with two locks). I wanted revenge. Next step is the GPS tracking device I hide in my enclosure, but that involves having a contract with tracking company that has monthly charges. Still...much cheaper than gas, or replacing bikes.

We're getting a bit off topic, but I'm very interested in your story. Would you mind elaborating in a thread dedicated to stolen bike stories here?

Back to the topic. Where do I keep my bike lock? Here's a shot of the whole bike with the new Masterlock Street Cuffs mounted to the downtube. What'd you think? Sorry the pic is so small. The original size is way too large. You'll be pissed if I posted it full size. For that, please visit my blog. The thing you're looking at is just in front of the crankset at the very bottom of the bike just behind the front wheel.

I'm pleased to report that the lock mounted in this space does NOT interfere with the chain on the crankset! Awesome. It's been working great. I'm definitely going to keep it here. Although I am hesitant to hop curbs, I went down one while walking the bike and the cuffs clear it just fine. This might be a good place for people to put u-locks (d-locks) too. Just a thought.

Yeah, I know. That other photo above sucks. Here's a better one. You can see a lot more clearly how the Minoura mount is secured to the downtube. Works great.

I'm familiar with two cases in which a booby-trap maker was legally challenged.
Denver Citizens Support Man In Booby Trap Killing '90. The outcome of the case was a plea bargain for a deferred sentence.. The stories contain some errors. It wasn't an auto repair shop, it was just warehouse that contained Connaghan's tools, and the police specifically told Connaghan to NOT set the trap.
In any case, Connaghan didn't do any serious time.
The other case was in Liberty City Florida in '86. A Muslim Vietnam vet clothing-variety store owner made a trap that electrocuted a burglar with plain ol' line voltage. The case didn't progress beyond the grand-jury stage, at which he was not indited.
Public sentiment is largely in favor of the trap maker in such a situation, and this may save a defendant at some stage in the legal process. But I'm not sure what the sentiment would be if the victim ended up being an innocent fire fighter.
Regarding a bike booby trap, the best policy for a trap maker is to avoid the police. After the trap is sprang, the trap-maker collects his or her bike and disappears.

+1 Boobytrap

Right up there with wooly man-trap! KF

Though not related to bike lock placement, I figured I'd post a new upgrade to the lock. Who would've thought you could upgrade locks?

It's a Kryptonite Evolution Mini 5 skin! Yup, skin like the ones for that fancy cell phone of yours. It comes in a ton of other colors but I chose red. Much better than the stock orange. At least I think so:
