I just found this supplier, It seems to have 100 types of lithium polymer cells, some of which look like ping cells, and also assembles batteries.

i'm guessing that in a group buy, you could get 64 cells / 48v20ah for 150 USD.= exl. BMS
using this cell you could make a 72v 20ah battery for under 120 USD exl. BMS

schenzen is the same place ping posts from? as they are 10AH cells, you would only have to solder 28 of them, only depends if "leading quality" are the light cells.

It would be ideal if someone got 1000 of these cells (i.e.) 30 batteries, and sold them as kits to assemble with a bms.

Do you think it is entirely necessary to solder the flat ping cells together, couldnt you clamp the tabs in strips of aluminium instead of soldering for an easy assemble kit?

There are a hundred different manufacturers all promising the world with these parts...

After having repaired a (Vpower) pack made from the pouch cells (ATL branded) I can't honestly say its a good idea. These puffed badly, and had a habit of tearing off the tabs, leaving a short aluminium tab that was unsolderable. They were also heavy for their capacity. Quality will vary from good to absolutely abyssmal. What you request as an 'engineering sample' will not neccesarily be what you recieve 1000 of when you place an order either...

I suspect that Ping buys his cells from his uncle Pong

Ping's batteries are LiFePO, those you listed are LiPo. Get them mixed up on the charger and you will either be stranded or toast.

I deal with ATL branded cells a good amount in laptop batt's I've open and rebuilt over 500+. To me its one of the better mfg's of cells around. I have cells going back to 2003 that still hold a charge good and test at 85%. Even cells that have been sitting at 0.8volts for 2+ years I've been able to bring back and still get near 75-80%

Sounds like a lot of risk for the guy doing a group buy, when a ping is not really all that expensive.

i have never seen one of the ATL pouches puffed up either. the original post was about lipo though, lithium polymer chemistry and ping only sells lifepo4 chemistry. totally different pouches.

I had a pack that was tearing apart the fibreglass tape it was so badly puffed - Cells were marked ATL 3.2V/4950mAH 55A5D0 876811500*** (serial #) I still have some sitting on the bench at the moment. I recieved the 48V 20AH pack + BMS + Charger thrown in for free as part of an ebay auction, battery was dead (3 parallel packs all 0V) so it got reconfigured to 36V.

Stuck a pin in the puffed (but still showing a healthy voltage) cells, and flattened them out - got that terrible acetone smell, and resealed with silicon. Annoying thing was, they still kept puffing after this treatment, so they recieved about half a roll of Nasua gaffa tape before they got too big - damn pack is as solid as a rock now. 4 X 4950 mAh cells in parallel, so 20AH, an still getting about 17.5Ah before LVC! Pretty suprising.

I sure Ping buys in bulk at wholesale prices, but..I'm also sure he gets an occasional bed cell. He assembles the good ones, bench tests them after soldering, and ships them with a good record of customer service.

Saving just a few bucks and cutting out one of the "good guys" who are actually trying to build a good long-term relationship with the E-bike community? Not worth the effort for me. If his prices were outrageous and his quality was sketchy, maybe, but...

I would like to add the ATL cells will puff. I have about 50 or so here that have, Id guess 50 out of 500 Ive had problems with. The ATL cells seem to be sealed good its rare to find one not vac intact. When the mfg of the batts that I work on was building packs new from cells I've seen evidence to support about 10% rejection of the cells sent by ATL NEW and not passing OC. Most of the time it was for foreign object visible in the cell or none uniform size.

Anyone in the SF bay can come get some older stock ATL cells from me for dirt cheap.
