Would a universal e-bike catalogue website be useful?

I have had an idea for a while to create a website to catalogue ebike parts to make information easily accessible, rather than having to dig through janky websites or email companies for the price of a part.

Each part would have a page where you can download the manual, see the price, specs and reviews/discussion from endless sphere.

There are lots of e-bike parts out there so it would have an open editor like a wiki so anyone can add parts they have information about or edit existing parts to fix errors or add more information.

Possibly there could be a part picker similar to pc part picker to check compatibility, generate performance estimations using grin's motor simulator and show a final price for a build.

This is quite a big project to start without gauging interest, so would you find it useful? Do you have any suggestions?

Sounds like a life's work--you'd be going at it 24/7 for probably at least years (maybe more) just to "catch up" to today; dunno how hard it would be to keep up with new stuff (which will probably only get greater and greater amounts and types).

Useful...for the one or two people in da intarwebz that actually read things and do research, it would be. ;)

But since most people (everywhere, about everything) just post questions about their stuff with insufficient info to help them, then complain that they aren't getting the help they want, or else never come back and even read the answers they get, I don't think it would help any of them (99.99999999999% of the internet's denizens).

I don't think you have a good estimate of the work required for this. Perhaps you could make a start, and then see how many people contribute as a way to gauge the work involved.

I think it would be useful.

I took a few years break from ebike building and had to catch myself up again..
Took months to find out what's out there. There's no master list and huge market fragmentation.

We have a knowledgebase system by december-ish. It would be a great format to put this data in, and multiple people could help keep the data updated over time.

Sonders had a great start and it went out of business I know the guy who is reparing e-bikes for 14 years for some reason he couldn't get a controller for the saunders through saunders they keep sending him the wrong one three different controllers. So with a lot of e-bikes and companies sometimes they can't know what they have from year to year split year it'd be like the Volkswagen beetle to work on them you would have to know what's going on each year split year what engine cases never to use.
It would be a high mountain to climb
