You're up at 2:30 in the morning rebuilding a battery pack you already put together once for it... Huzzah for soldering!!!

I always try to avoid working on battery packs after midnight.
The likely hood of KFF goes way up when sleep deprivation is involved!

So is endangering your battery pack really loving your ebike?

You go racing the next day, with zero sleep the night before building your bike. Like Evo just did yesterday.

Yeah I still consider it love, despite the obvious possibility of inherent abuse. That goes with most relationships though doesn't it? At least I'm not hacking my ebike-parts family apart with a maul in my sleep deprived state. I did have a brush with KFF last night though...sacrifices are necessary!

How'd EVO do?? Is it that spooky-tooth death race thread?

When you hear thunder, you rush to unplug your ebike charger from the wall outlet whether your bike is plugged in or not, and it's the only electronic item in the house that you use this only surefire method to protect something from a lightning surge. An ebike isn't useful for long if you can recharge the batteries.

Yeah look in undead race results thread for the ranting. EVO flatted his tire and had to race his commuter. Still did good, but I didn't catch what place exactly. Too busy with my drama at the time.

Well that thing about night-time soldering held true this evening... I managed to fry a cell. These little suckers have a very narrow margin between the negative outside shell and the inner positive terminal...and I guess the ring that separates them at the positive end melted under the duress of my soldering iron. The result was a sort of anti-climactic hiss and puffing heat from the cell as I rushed to clip it away from the rest. Fortunately I have a few backups so I replaced it and completed re-soldering the packs together. Now I need to do a series of discharge/charge cycles on each of 10 individual packs, // them up and be on my way. The 24-some odd lbs of batteries will now be mounted over the top tube where they do less damage to my handling. Pics to come if I have time.

You spend an hour and a half on a regular pedal bike on halloween looking for some place that sells fuses cuz it's the last part you need to complete your build..

True story

What's KFF?
Kentucky Fried Finger
An informal term coined to represent the damage to ones finger if a Lipo battery or cell is shorted.
There is some good examples of the damage that can be done in the sphere somewhere.

Essentially a battery powered Arc Flash, look that up on you tube

I swear this question gets asked enough to sticky a thread dedicated to it :p There are a few terminology threads spread throughout though...

wwhen you have to toss a coin...make the car p;ayment...or...buy more lipo ... cant go to sleep without the battery pack beside your pillow ...... get married or start a new build

You have no idea how lucky i feel that my girlfriend will put up with this crap.. lol. 6 bikes in the house and parts everywhere and nary a complaint.... a real keeper.

If you keep it and all associated parts in the dinning room.I don't like electric things to get damp or dirty. My wife of almost 30 years is so good putting up with my insanity. She's one in a million

..you pack up or sell everything you own(including both cars) just to spend the summer riding around the country telling people how cool e-biking is. True story. Gonna do it next year too. Selling the boat to finance this trip.

Ditto on the girlfriend/wife thing. I haven't actually seen the kitchen table in weeks.

When you break any part of it it's GOTTA be fixed a.s.a.p. or else your whole day's ruined

you break a chain and the instant you're back home start using the chain-breaking tool automatically without thinking..... 4 hours later, you've oiled / regreased the freewheels / run the chain through a cloth covered in lithium grease / tightened the chain / fixed the derailleur / given it a service pretty much.

4 hours. I love my ebikes, but I haven't put 4 hours of maintenance in total in 2 years, and most of the time I did put in was servicing brakes which is now reduced by a factor of 10 thanks to regen braking. 8)

Ditto on great wives. Joyce let me wash a Honda Cylinder head in the dishwasher! It got real clean!!!!

This is a ditty from a friend of mine on CPF

Behind every great man is a wife rolling her eyes.

You Truly Love Your Ebike if...

...Your wife threatens to leave you for spending too much time with your e-bike and starts calling it " Your Mistress".

...Every time you meet someone new you must work your e-bike into the conversation - in the first 10 minutes.

...You actually go out of your way to meet bike people just to tell them about your e-bike.

...Every time you speed passed a regular biker you must shout, " Hey pal, Put a motor on it!"

All true in my case.. sad I know but.. I Love my e-bike! I think I'm addicted. I actually offer to ride to the store and other places on the bike when it is not necessary. I use every excuse to go for a ride.

Ditto, are you electric rider, ie the electric rider? insane a cycle?

Wake up the morning after shoveling snow from the driveway the night before, pondering how you can build big ass slush guards for the e-BMX so you can keep riding to work.. planning on a roll up carpet to place under the bike so the Boss does not complain about the salt stains the bike will leave...

*grumble grumble.. snow.. ugh...... it's official...

Nope.. sorry to disappoint. Your talking about Dave from the company ElectricRider.com and his monster bike. http://www.electricrider.com/custom/

I know this now cus I looked up insane a cycle. I did not know of this company before. I am known as Electric Rider on 4 top most popular e-bike and motored bike forums. I choose the nick cus it sounds cool like Ghost Rider. I think it's such a cool nick, I am shocked no one else had thought of it.

My goal is to one day have an e-bike that is barely just over legal ( so I can still get away with riding it) I want the fastest acceleration an ebike can give (within reason) with a top speed of 30 miles an hour. 25 mph is the legal limit where I live - But this is no good as a top speed. I believe all e-bike kits are wrong for giving a top speed of 20 mph because like cars, there are times when you just cannot stop.. you must speed up to avoid danger. A top speed of 20 mph won't give you this safety margin. For cars and all other vehicles it is legal to exceed the speed limit to accelerate to avoid danger. It should be so for e-bikes also in my opinion.

I think I will start a new thread on this topic to get others opinions.. but I did want to answer your questions. In my town I am The Electric Rider. I have my leathers, my studio monitor headphones and dvd player filled with awesome Metal. I cruise and I dig it. :)
