I'm wondering if anyone else is not seeing excecutable embedded links on the forum?

All embeds from utube are just black, tho maybe it's a weird glitch with only my PC?
Never had that one happen before, if so.

(moderator edit: changed title to make it easier for others to quickly find it and for accuracy. Probable fix is in this post https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=82660&p=1212971#p1213358)

It is your computer system!

The only problem I've been having are the pictures, they seem to be larger then the outline of the picture. Its been like that for awhile. I use cntrl + mouse scroll button to minimize or enlarge the screen. But I also have done a BIOS update. But I know its my system.

It's probably the flash plugin on your browser. It's been discussed before but I can't find the thread(s) ATM. :( I don't remember if there is a universal fix.

The forum software and settings haven't changed, so if there is a universal problem, then AFAICT it's either the flash player itself in how it responds to the embedding scripts/etc, or at Youtube's end. :/

When I viewed a couple of threads with embedded videos yesterday on an android tablet in Firefox, while I was out to meet someone before work, it correctly showed the previews and played the videos.

They never work embedded (on any site) on my ancient desktop because I can't update any of the software to new enough stuff (some won't run on this old a unit, and other stuff won't run without updating the other stuff, etc). When it started for me it was after some message about Flash no longer being supported had come up, IIRC. (it's been some time now, more than a year I think).

This is one thread
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=404&hilit=youtube+flash+embed*&p=1095522#p1095522
that discusses the issue, from more than a year ago.

just checked and all 3 computers got a Microsoft update on 12/08/13. I guess that caused the compatibility issue.
Tried Chrome and IE, same issue in both. Checked that I have latest flash and that I am using the correct embedding method according to the link you posted.
I tried 2 windows 10 machines and one windows 7. No luck with any of them.

Oh well - looks like no more youtube watching for me on ES!

My mac is showing "missing plugin" for YT imbeds on 3 different browsers. Safari, Chrome, Firefox. Not sure I wanna install the missing plugin, seems like there's a probably reason it's been changed/disabled?

Too bad, lotsa content that's much harder to view now.

Caution, I had that happen once before but I think the 'updated plugin' was a trogan. Bigtime virus/ ransomware after that.

Anytime I have the issue now a reboot fixes any odd notifications of missing program pieces. Actually haven't rebooted yet (to determine if that fixes the problem with youtube embeds here on ES)- got too many tabs open and haven't had a minute yet.

But try a reboot before re/installing any 3rd party stuff.

Also a tip, if you keep alot of media/data on a harddrive, make it all write protected because it protects against some of those 'ransomware's

Hi Nutspecial!
Yeah I suffered from the same problem started about 4 days ago? I posted this elsewhere but this is the proper thread for it..

I noticed any youtube embedded posts for me don't show up any more on Google Chrome..
I thought it was settings somewhere but after doing a full reset it was still the same.. I now think its something youtube did or maybe some update in chrome period..
Anyway I noticed it doesn't happen in Firefox but I am quite addicted to Chrome as my main browser now..
I found a solution and that is to use Google Chrome Canary which is their bleeding edge version of browser.. So its possible something else could go wrong but so far this bleeding edge browser is quite nice.
https://www.google.com.au/chrome/browser/canary.html

I am now wondering if it was a bigger then normal Windows 10 update.. which was about 4 days ago.. I noticed settings were reset like my default PDF viewer was Chrome but MS snatched it and loaded it up with their Edge browser.. Then I discover its got a massive security hole where hackers are triggering executable code inside what appears normal PDFs for full remote takeover of the PC.. Good grief if it wasn't that I play games in windows like BF4 etc I would happily ditch the evil MS empire..

Hmmm, thanks for confirmation Beastie!

I'm running win 7 and last I checked for updates they had like 60+ which I haven't DL yet.
Browserwise I'm just running the latest IE, maybe 11.

So def wide variety of affected software.

Is the problem with embedded utube all over net or just ES or perhaps forum platform-wide?

I'm getting the black rectangle with my Sansung Galaxy Tab. Gonna try some YouTube online. Maybe someone found a way to make people pay. "Pay TV = no commercials", they used to say.

TuTubo worked ok with Jay Leno racing the jet dragster lady, although the black screen at the commercial break had me going.

Sorry I couldn't help.
For Bill's old Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.2, with auto-updates turned off in everything that allows that (OS and Firefox), embedded YT vids still work fine here on ES as of today.

I don't know what versions of Flash, FIrefox, or Android his old tablet is running though, I have to find out.

Haven't heard yet whether or not his android phone works with them or not, or his PC.

But since they do still work on the tablet, that means it isn't a change at the forum end that caused it, which at least eliminates that as the cause.

A few possibilities exist:

--Something in Flash itself was changed to require different scripting to tell it how to play as an embedded Flash file, so that anything with the newer Flash wouldn't understand the commands from the PHPBB page. This possibility only works out if everyone with the problem has had Flash updated (automatically or manually) on all of the problem computers, since the last time that it worked.

This can be verified by reverting to older Flash versions and seeing if the system now works. Sometimes reversion doesn't cleanly occur, and manual cleanup and reinstall would be needed; depends on the system and the design of the uninstaller.

--Something at Youtube's end was changed to require different scripting. This possibility isn't likely, simply because it still works on some unchanged browsers (like Bill's old tablet).

I'm not sure of a way to specifically verify this, since it's unlikely YT would respond to any questions about this (why would they care?).

--Something in the browsers themselves was changed to produce different rendered results for the PHPBB-generated pages. This possibility only works if any browser that was verified "broken" was updated on all of teh problem computers since it last worked.

This can be verified by reverting to older browser versions taht worked; same caveats apply as with the Flash reversion.

--OS update to some critical DLL / etc file that's commonly used by whatever is doing the rendering or interpretation; seems unlikely simply because of the wide range of different OSs that exhibit the problem, but there are so many dependencies between things I suppose it could be possible anyway.

This could also be verified by reversion to previous state when system was known to work, and same caveats apply as with other reversions.

--Something different is causing the problem in some of the computers vs others. This would make it much harder to nail down the issue. I don't know of any certain way to verify this type of cause, other than for each person to fix their own issue and report what was done, and find that each fix was different in what it would do to their system.

--Any other ideas for possible problems?

FWIW, there are a lot of hits on Google for this general type of problem, going back a ways, like this one:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/981145

A few I saw pointed to this
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mixed-content-blocking-firefox
which may apply to other browsers, too, especially here on ES because it does use HTTPS:.

One possible search of many
https://www.google.com/search?q=All+embeds+from+utube+are+just+black%2C+t&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

another
https://www.google.com/search?q=youtube+embed+black&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

I can just add my pc always asks to update flash and I haven't for a long time.
Win7 hasn't been updated in quite a while also.

On around the 8th I did visit MS IE homepage because I got notification by a secure webpage that my browser needed to be current. MS IE confirmed I was and am running newest version, and without being able to 'update' the newest version I just restarted and webpage was then fine.

Curious to see what it ends up being. As Fingers caused me to think, it wouldn't be something weird with adblock would it? That can be glitchy sometimes and might be something we could all have in common.

Sorry I couldn't help.
Not on the PC here; The older version of opera doesn't have any plugins installed, it's bare default stuff; I use it to open pages that my heavily-customized FF won't or can't. --but my problem is probably stuff that's too old to work with YT/etc. :)

Just found this https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=438&t=2383086&sid=5c93c9e48d749659ec4a731a30baa8e8 on the phpBB comunity page, looks like it is an issue for a few forums now - first post started on 12th Aug which is when my youtube links stopped working on ES

Here is a snip:

EDIT: added quote box
Re: Youtube code isn't working anymore?
Postby Cheezeaza » Fri Aug 12, 2016 2:28 pm

YouTube updated the swf file that their (deprecated) flash API uses. Broke plenty of implementations of it.

I recommend using the iframe API for youtube videos: https://developers.google.com/youtube/i ... _reference

Maybe that thread might be helpful?

Sorry I couldn't help.

That was one of my suspicions.

I do still wonder, though: if that's why it's not working...why it does still work on the android tablet on the same pages? :?

FWIW, this page
https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=438&p=14499621#p14499621
gives alternate code (that I presume is to be edited into the PHPBB code itself as a new youtube embed tag), that works for some people, by changing to the iframe method.

It won't fix the old posts with existing embedded vids, though, will it? (I got confused while reading the threads there  ).

it looks like there are other threads on the phpBB community board discussing the issue and this one https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=438&p=14499621#p14499621 seems to have a fix. I know nothing about bulletin boards (thankfully!) but this may mean something to someone!
Here is a snip from some way down the linked thread:

EDIT: Added quote box

My solution :

BEFORE :

CODE: SELECT ALL

CODE: SELECT ALL
<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/{IDENTIFIER}" width="425" height="350">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{IDENTIFIER}" />
<param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
</object>

AFTER :

CODE: SELECT ALL

(same)

CODE: SELECT ALL
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/{IDENTIFIER}" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

On my forum, it works for old AND new embedded videos.

Youtube embeds means the youtube "window" or "frame" or "outline" within the thread that acts just like a regular youtube webpage, click on the play button and you are still on ES viewing YT?

Amberwolf - just to clarify, that was a snip from the phpBB website that I sent, just in case it made sense to anyone - mine isn't working.
Markz I have no play button, nothing, just a black image where the youtube video used to be. Here is a screen dump showing what it looks like:

 I probably even knew that when I read it, but since it wasnt' in a quote box i"assumed"...Still, it probably will fix the problem, and it is posted in the admin area for whoever is next avaialbe to take a look at. :)

My bad. I only ever use the 'Quote box' for quoting bits from this forum - never even though of using it for other data. I have now edited my previous posts to make it easier for others to follow.

The annoying thing for me is it was solved when I started using the Chrome Canary browser.. all the embedded youtube videos came up and they were using HTML5 instead of flash..
But now in the last 24 hours that stopped working as well! And its back to blank flash.. Maybe someone at google saw it working for us and deliberately changed it again some how to stuff it up..
