Zippy Flightmax / Turnigy lipo testing

Doesn't Luke have a good relationship with them from spending gazillions of dollars there ? He may be able to make it happen.
I'd buy a few more packs if HC will do group buy prices and then ship to different addresses (I suspect not though, which will otherwise rule me by being on the other side of the planet)

You might be able to get them to do a run of 6S2P for a decent sized order - that'd be cool.

As much as I dont want to interupt what I think is about to become a string of methods vs liveforphysics posts...

I thought I'd mention PVC pipe as a good cheap enclosure for these lipo batteries to protect them from puncture or blunt force trauma.
After test fitting a few lipo packs in bunnings today (I must have looked like a terrorist making an IED right there in the isle  ) I found the 100x50mm is exactly the dimensions of a 6S2P pack and the PVC has just enough give in it to squeeze the 10ga wires in there too. Alternatively if you're running banks of 5S there's a few mm to spare around the wiring so you'd want a thin piece of foam in there to stop them rattling around. Pity they don't make end caps for the rectangular stuff like they do the round, but oh well I'll make some out perspex/plexiglass.
Whack on a few coats of gunmetal hammertone and I reckon it'll come up nice.

So............ Uhm how much you selling these sweet battery boxes for? LOL. I dont think I can get them in town :( I was planning to build stuff with carbonfiber but it would still be nice to have this inside it for more rigidity! At the moment I need 4 of your sweet 100x50 boxes :D

Oh yea?
I have lipo porn too!

Oooow, someone got advance stock of Gary's long anticipated balancers :)

Seeing as there's more interest in these than I thought there would be I took some better pics for those asking about the fit and dimensions. The top pic shows 2 6S packs and the gap (easily jams tight with a bit more duct tape, or as I mentioned, running the wires down the edges) The bottom pic is 2 5S packs - plenty of room for 10ga wiring along the top but the same tight fit along the sides.

If anyone is really interested I CAN ship my patented Hyena® lipo boxes to the US :p
If Australia post doesn't try and calculate the postage costs based on volume of the parcel (which they often do but after just checking I can't see mention of it for international parcels) then shipping shouldn't cost tooo much as the PVC is faily light. Maybe $10 ?

My Flightmax 5S1P 5Ah 15C packs have arrived:

Now, to modify my 10A charger so it will put out 61.5V and buy two more BM-6 units and a 5S discharge balancer of some sort...

Realy

Cell#4 was at 4.8 volts?

got a fiver that says it was a typo...

Nice! Lucky, those look like healthy cells!
I usually have at least one that comes in 100mV or so low

Just in case anyone wasn't aware, one difference between the Zippy Flightmax and Turnigys is the main wires are 12g on the Zippys vs 10g on the Turnigys. I think the shrinkwrap is a bit thicker on the Turnigys as well.

If the hobbycity dimensions and weights are correct then comparing the Zippy Flightmax 20C 5S1P 20C and Turnigy 20C 5S1P 20C also shows:

* Turnigy has marginally smaller volume
* Zippy is 80g lighter (12% lighter)

So it's going to come down to individual requirements or what you value more.

Actually it's the zippys that have the smaller volume.
The height and width balances out to be the same (turnigys are square, zippys are 2mm wider one way but 2mm narrower the other) but the zippys are 4mm shorter overall. Again it's splitting hairs but if someone has a particular enclosure in mind it could make a difference.

:?: :|

Zippy Flightmax 20C 5S1P 20C: 141 x 45 x 46 = 291,870 mm^3

Turnigy 20C 5S1P 20C: 144 x 49 x 40 = 282,240 mm^3

I'll have to break out the microscope if further hair splitting is required :D

AH, you're looking at 5S's, I was looking at the 6Ss. I was also looking at the 15C packs that are currently on sale and are comparable in price to the turnigys.

That's interesting actually, I just checked and the 5S zippys are 4mm shorter than the 6S. You'd assume they'd be the same cells and the 5S would be narrower by the width of just the extra cell, but if the whole pack is shorter they may be using different cells? The 3S, 4S and 5S packs are all the same length at 140mm, so it's just the 6S that's a bit longer. Unless they've measured the 6S incorrectly... :?

Hold the phone - the prices just dropped!

The 25C are now only $56
Check the recent price drop page

Edit: They are doing price drops right now. Each time I refresh I see more new prices. I am going to buy tonight before they get snatched up

$53 for 20C

Or if you are retarded you can pay $228 for the same thing

Looks like you can ship much larger packages via EMS Express... When did that happen? Looks like there is no longer an 8KG limit. I put 8 5000mah 6S packs in my cart and it works out to only $12 shipping each.

Yeah you'd have to be a mentalist to buy those polyquests

Is there any advantage in getting the 25Cs ? I dont think any of us try to pull that much from them, unless you want to run a 1P pack on your 100 amp controller and get all of 3 minutes run time out of a charge
They're out of stock anyway, it's showing -46

20Cs are still in stock, although mine are showing at $57 (gold member). 25Cs are $60.39
Voicecoils if you want any more lipos lemme know and I'll order them through my account. It seems my discount isnt quite as good as methys but it'll still save you a few bucks.

Incidently, does anyone know how much money you have to sink at hobbycity / hobbyking to get bigger discounts ?
I'm listed as a gold member and have spend $1200 there.

Re: shipping I've found the 4-4.5kg by airmail is the sweet spot, coming in at $9.90 per kg
edit: that's to Australia anyway, it may be different for you guys up north

YES

Always buy the highest C rating you can afford.

* Lower internal resistance = less heat = more efficient = less voltage sag = more power = higher RPM = better performance
* More likely to be higher in quality
* You can quick charge at like 5C
* You can run insane setups like 24S1P and they still wont get warm
* etc

You may never draw draw the full 25C - but it is a linear relationship.... 40C is twice as good as 20C so if you are going to run them a 15C you will see a significant difference between 20C and 40C.

That said - it comes down to value.

If the 25C are $10 more than the 20C I buy the 20C
If the 25C are $3 more than the 20C you had better believe I am paying the extra $3

So you are correct - we will never *need* the higher C but they are still higher quality.

Remember 2C to 3C
That is what most bike kits come with. 10Ah gets you 20A with 10V sag....
