If someone wants to recap what is going on (with links to posts) I will put it in the reserved post I have on the first page.

* Capture the idea that Banners are not the problem, that profiting off of our IP is the real problem
* Capture Andy, his awesome forum vampire business, and his relationship to Trevor
* Capture Trevor and Andy's clueless responses so far
* Capture The valid threats that have been made by LFP etc
* Capture Justin's offer to finance the forum
* Capture whatever else you feel is significant

That kind of stuff. Maybe a few people put it together and I will move it to the first page.

Many weekend warriors are going to show up and have no idea WTF is going on and wont want to read 15 pages. We can link to the summary in our signatures.

THANK YOU METHODS!!! seriously, this is alot to digest and I just want to say: "what makes this forum awesome is the members, period." it's people like methods, matt, and luke and........... that make this place great. don't run them off.

edit: trying to formulate a concise thought about this situation and have fallen short. got some drinkin, I mean thinkin to do.

It's like 1 midget and 42 lions.

It has been proposed that Endless Sphere is going to be monetized by the new owner, Trevor. Who contends that the site will be tastefully upgraded with ads embedded. Members will have the ability to turn on or off the ads if they wish.

However, Trevor so far has failed to acknowledge the main disagreement with the members of Endless Sphere. They do not want their posts, given freely and in good faith, to earn money for an owner. They also do not want ads in any form to be on the main forum. Although some, not all, are willing to have ads solely in the vendor section of the website.

Andy, an associate of Trevor, who also encouraged the new owner to purchase Endless Sphere, apparently makes a living off monetising fora. As far as the members of Endless Sphere can tell, not a single one of Trevor's sites would be compatible with the member's vision of the site. They are punctuated with various advertisements of all kinds. Banner ads, sponsor ads, and Google ads (text and pictures). Although the members of these fora appear to be content to allow someone to make a profit out of their contribution, the feeling on Endless Sphere is not mutual.

So far neither Trevor, nor Andy, have been able to satisfy any of the questions posed by members. They have provided no details on how they aim to 'monetise' Endless Sphere. They have also failed to reveal anything meaningful about their backgrounds, although Andy has confirmed that he owns several fora. Trevor has not shared any of the specific details of his vision for the Sphere. It would appear that Trevor has some sort of background in computer programming, or web design, but so far he has not confirmed this.

Live For Physics, with the aid of Big Moose, Justin Le and AussieJester, has offered to set up another independent forum, that will be free to the current users of Endless Sphere. He, along with the others, promise that this new site will never be commercialised and will always remain in the ownership of the community who post there.
He claims to be flooded with PMs from other members offering assistance in the relocation. He also says he has an offer from another member for free hosting on his business server.

Many members, LIve For Physics, Aussie Jester, mdd0127, Neptronix, have expressed a strong desire to delete all of their posts as they do not want to allow Trevor to make money off the back of their hard work.

Amberwolf has expressed serious concerns about the members deleting all of their threads. As he has Asperger's Syndrome, such changes would cause him a lot of torment. This has also been echoed by at least one other forum member.

Neptronix has discovered that Andy has a track record when it comes to taking over forums. He believes that each forum take-over is initially preceded by a new mobile app. This could be for the possible purpose of placating the members of the given forum. Worryingly, Neptronix also notes that Andy has previously prevented members of his other fora, at least one forum, from deleting their posts.

Justin Le has also offered to host the new site as a sub-domain of ebikes.com, a parked domain he picked up that is completely independent of his business (ebikes.com/endless-sphere). He says that he will not commercialise it. Many Endless Sphere members are behind this. One, me, would also prefer a Ltd company to be set up with a proper Memorandum of Association and a quorum, thus guaranteeing the future of Endless Sphere for generations to come.

Undoubtedly, the preferred option by all the members of Endless Sphere is that we don't have to relocate and that things stay as is. Methods, along with other members, has expressed the desire to buy back the forum from Trevor.

As of yet, we still don't know what will happen. We shall have to wait and see...

It looks like Knight sold out too cheap and a (nothing wrong with it) buyer snapped it up with little effort.

The new buyer can either sell out for a reasonable profit or try to continue to operate a forum that the members appear ready to wack a lot of the content and go elsewhere with a new domain.

Pay attention trevor. I don't think you will get a second chance. Many, many people here are capable of setting up a new and most likely better place

I'm going to offer up some constructive suggestions for Trandy, er....Andor, whatever. Side banners will kill the joy of this site for me. All the sites I have seen of yours so far have side banners. Will those be able to be disabled by members? I personally don't like the looks of that other forum type. I guess that is the Vbulletin, anyway, it looks very cluttered and hyper to my eyes. ES is a fantastic example of less is more if you ask me. As it is right now, I believe this is and is not a forum for the masses all at the same time. It is a forum for the masses because there is a real spirit of helpfulness and little to no attitude toward newbies here so that even on your first day you are welcomed and your questions are answered promptly and thoroughly. On the other hand, if you are a newbie that thinks you know it all, you might have a few people call you on your BS here. :) It is NOT a forum for the masses in the sense that there are discussions taking place on this forum everyday that is so far above the layman's brain it's like reading another language...... trust me I've been there!! I remember reading the Infineon controllers for dummies thread and my brain started hurting!! The beauty of this is that the longer you stay here the more you can start to understand that "other" language. If you turn this into a "McForum" the juice is going to leave and it will just be a forum for the masses. Because your time on this forum is so minute you have no idea what this forum is about. It seems to me that the decision to move ES to vbulletin is a decision that has already been made with no input sought from the members. I for one want the "feel" of the site to stay the same. Oh yeah, another thing that drives me bat shit crazy is animated smilies. The small animations that we have here are great. All the animation takes place inside the circle. When you are reading a thread on one of those other forums there's so many dancing smilies flopping around it is really difficult for me to absorb what is sometimes challenging topics for me. I am not an "electronics" guy and sometimes I have to read things several times to really get what the point of something is. I definitely DON"T WANT a bunch of damned dancing smilies on my screen while I'm trying to get some concept through my non-electronically inclined thick skull of mine. Side banners, hyper layouts, and dancing smilies will totally ruin this site for me. Just say no to McForums!!

F'n sh_t!...

I guess not showing ads to registered users is actually good for the business - you can't see the bunch of advertising you do on your posts...

Love the part that says their forums are highly moderated.

This ES event is actually making me re-think my participation in other forums.

Just thought i'd throw this log on the fire:

[Andy's personal info, business name, website, twitter feed etc. deleted]

Those were just two little logs, how about these tree stumps here? lol..

[snipped two more forum links]

Sooo... are we going to be owned Andy's company, or Trevor's company?
Because having an 'app' already seems to be something that Andy's company does with all their sites. What is going on here seems to be consistent with what happens with all forums he owns.

Damn... those last two are nasty!
Good post bro

^--- preventing their users from deleting their content and packing up.

Am I missing something? Preventing?

Is it possible that it could happen here?

Well, since Trevor is out having a beer, i thought i'd do some work on his place.. i got a new logo for the site ready:

site_logo.gif

can the new bosses add a "delete all posts" button to the site?

Hopefully you'll pardon my angry words, as I am flabbergasted that even after 16 pages of this thread, Trevor et al. still have no idea what you are doing, what you are destroying, and what will be lost because you will not listen. It takes quite a lot to make me angry, but I have reached that point.

trevor said:
You keep asking about what my intent is. I thought I communicated this with you in my previous posts but I guess it was not clear enough:
No, because you haven't said what exactly you're going to do in response to what we've said. I'm not even sure you're reading these responses, although your eyes might be catching bits of them on screen and getting tidbits of data, it's certainly not all getting thru to you.

- Upgrade the software running the site to vBulletin
Doing that, regardless of what else is done to the site, is basically going to lose me here, unless before you change it over you can make it look and work just like the PHPBB forum does right now for me, without me having to waste hours of my life redoing all the stuff I already did to make it work for me.

You may lose others that don't like Vbulletin but haven't spoken up yet or dont' know about any of this. Probably not for the same reasons as me, but I do know I'm not the only person with similar problems on the site.

- Develop a vendor program so we serve nice looking and relevant ads to our viewers (logged in members can turned off the ads at anytime)
You're definitely not reading what we're saying.

Go back and try again.

Doing that is going to lose you lots of contributors and contributions to the knowledge on the site.

If you keep the ads to just a totally separate marketplace page, not part of the forum itself, I have a feeling most could live with that.

Stick them in the forum and use our contributions as bait for vendors and customers, and you lose us and our stuff.

We've given freely of our time and knowledge, and traded that back and forth to build this place. Respect that, listen to us, don't do what you appear to be planning.

- Find ways to give back to the EV community and take care of the members who have contributed to making ES such a great place.
Try LISTENING to us, right now, before you do ANYTHING to the site. If you don't do that, ES won't be a place AT ALL, great or not.

It's Friday night and after all the stress from taking this thread personally I am going to sign off for the night and have a beer.
You might want to have a good think about it, instead, and realize that while you might own the name, you don't own any of the contributors, and whatever you might think you don't own the contributions themselves, either.

If you don't think we have a say in what happens to those and how they are used, you are mistaken. I really hope you realize that really soon, because I would love to see this work out for everyone rather than cause the destruction of what has been the best ebike/ev forum on the planet for some time, as well as my favorite home away from home.

If you want to talk about stress, how about we talk about the stress that you are putting the entire membership thru right now (and what I'm going thru as I watch this place essentially dissolve in flames around me...if you had any idea what autism and asperger's are, you might have some tiny inkling about it...but all day I've been torn between feeling like puking my guts out and crying).

The forum changes themselves would do that quite well without any deletions, but I really hope it doens't come to deletions. (although those would bother me a bit less knowing how justified they appear to be at this point).

Andy said:
I understand your point about the Open Source nature and feeling sold out. I don't know about the details of when ES was started or why expectations were set that way.
I am pretty sure that you have no clue how we feel about this, and I am also pretty sure that neither you nor Trevor cares. It's hard to tell since you both talk like the managers I didn't like that have taken over at places I've worked.

Ad blockers are also an option for a guest who does not like to see ads.
It has nothing to do with blocking or turnign off ads. It has to do with having them there in the first place, and what that does and implies. Try reading what has already been written, cuz I'm already awful tired of re-explaining it, and I bet others are, too.

lol, do you play fiddle by any chance? cos rome is burning while you're off for a pint.

A bunch of us offered to set up a wiki for free, but knightmb told me it was not possible without explaining why ....now I see.

You know there are a lot of very savvy computer people on here. There is nothing you are offering to do that we cannot do ourselves for free.

So far you have not given any compelling argument for what value you will bring to us. The value appears to be only going one way so far.

GO AMBERWOLF!

Here it is guys... one of the most selfless mods on the forum is about to bust his frigging gut. Good job speaking your mind bro!

If anyone has a HTtrack script to mirror this site,
I've been trying, wasting hours of time that could've been much better spent on other things (but I'm afraid stuff is just going to vanish when enough people get pissed off and start taking their stuff out). I've got it running just backing up all the pages/threads, but it can't copy the attachments, as those you have to be logged in to view.

I also had to completely disable reading any external sites, because even though I told it just one level, it was still backing up hundreds of MB of other stuff from other sites that were just linked from posts or signature lines, etc. I don't have enough space or time for that (it was stuck on PHPBB's blog site for an HOUR grabbing stuff that it shouldn't. So it isn't grabbing *any* pics, attached or extrernally linked. :(

If anyone has a better way, and a faster connection and more space, it'd be really nice to get a complete copy of ES as it is right now, before people start cutting holes in it, and before it gets totally screwed up with Vbulletin.

(cuz once it switches to that, I won't have any reason to even want to waste my time to read the backup versions if they are copies of vbulletin style pages).

Don't worry amberwolf - that is covered by more than a few members.
We will lose no content - it is already safe and preserved where our new masters can not touch it.

Anyone who is backing up - KEEP GOING.
More is better.... I would prefer that we don't even have to lose an hour of IP over this nonsense.
