Why don't you put new cells in the old case? You can get better cell quality and capacity that way.

Would like to retain the semi functional battery as a spare
also tryed to press out the existing with finger pressure no movement of the pack
as both ends were removed plastic end caps it is tight in there
case is an al alloy with small fins/ribs on the short sides 4 cm plain/smooth on the 8cm

is that a common sized battery case in china or euro's ?
4x8 cm is not a USA size I can find

I get that, but I think it's backwards. If you can find a generic pack small enough to do the job, it won't be made from top shelf cells. So the amount of total energy in it and your mostly-dead pack put together, will be less than you can stuff into the single case by using high performance cells.
