TSDZ8 OSF (open source firmware)

If you have the time and enjoy tinkering, OSF is for you. You'll need to spend some time tuning the engine to your needs and preferences.

Hi everyone. I'm completely new to the whole OSF scene and only familiar with sabvoton on my other build. Just made a build using this mid drive and absolutely in love with jt. Just made an account in this forum to comment on this post even though I've read around for a while in the past. Just a few questions, I have a Bluetooth EKD-01display, what will OSF bring for me? Chatgpt says it it lets the display display more info as the controller sends that data. Is this true? Because I thought that would've been more of a display firmware update. Another thing is , is there a shortcut combination I can use to switch between street mode and off-road mode? Ebike limit here is 250 watt and 15.5 and my city is on a crackdown ATM because the kids on surrons ruin it for the rest of us who actually ride safely. If so, is it possible to do it with default firmware? On my hub drive build I wired in a load of reed switches disguised as other things to enable speed limit and disable the throttle which even if inspected or they tried to change settings in display it wouldn't over ride etc so it would be undetected but it was a very time consuming and annoying thing to do+it won't be possible with this controller as it's governed by firmware only through the screen. One last question, a trdl of other things osf can bring , like features, configs etc and do I have to plug in and flash everytime I wanna change a config or can I do it over Bluetooth? (Sorry for being lazy but I'm in a rush ATM and not much time to read through all this post)

I have a Bluetooth EKD-01display, what will OSF bring for me?

I have the VLCD5 display and my TSDZ2 install only gave me perceptible assist in turbo mode. My OSF is now set where it's almost too easy to pedal in Eco mode. I need to back off on the settings.

Capabilities depends on your display. With the basic display, embrusa has installed a basic street mode where you can disable the throttle, set a low speed limit, and lower power mode. Should pass a dyno test, If I were in Europe, I can pull off a couple of button clicks on the VLDC5 to enter street mode before they shoot me. Should be a simialr sequebce in the EK01, but who knows.

Meanwhile, my VLCD5 is so limited that although embrusa can encode the numbers to show amps, wattsage, and volts, it's hard to follow. Better to have a display that shows it in native mode on the screen,

I like that!
How do I know if the VLCD5 display works with my Vartstrom TSDZ8 motor?

Yes, but you'll need to manually generate the configuration in JavaConfigurator.jar. I'd recommend buying the cheaper SW102 or the more expensive 860c. With those two, you can configure everything from the screen and won't need to configure it manually with JavaConfigurator.

Everything is connected like it should (on stock it wokrs fine). I have external sensors with magnetic on my hydraulic brakes. If it wasn't works on throtle also it would be something wrong with sensor but on this situation i'm confused. Maybe tommorow I will check and mount in different way brake sensor and we will see if that help.
Everything is ok now. I remount sensor and it works fine.

è possibile flashare il tsdz8 osf per sw102 su un display eggrider che è fondamentalmente un sw102 (che ha già il Bluetooth attivato), dato che ho già acquistato il display per un bafang che avevo in precedenza e che non uso più?

It seems that several testers have an issue setting the right pedal torque ADC offset values.
I expect it is because they do not really look at the ADC values provided on the display.
It appens also that the values change over the time.

I understand that with some display like EDK01 (or even VLCD5) it is not so easy to get the pedal torque ADC value on the display.

I recommend to look at the ADC value and to apply the process explained in the readme section.

Still I made 2 changes in version V00.01.33 for VLCD5 (and similar displays) in order to get the motor running even if you do not know the good ADC values.
1) if you declare in javaconfigurator that you did not calibrated the torque sensor, OSF will automatically set the torque ADC offset to the value it get 3 seconds after power on and add a margin of 20. I hope that in most case, it will be OK. Please note that this is not perfect because some motors provide quite big different ADC values depending just on the position of the pedal and so the used offset can also depend on the position of the pedal at power on. Pedal torque ADC max will be automatically set on 450 which seems to be an usual value for TSDZ8 and is not so critical.

2) if you declare in javaconfigurator that the torque sensor is calibrated, then you have now 2 options to set torque ADC offset.
- if the value you fill in the configurator is higher than 50, OSF will use it as offset and consider that it includes already a margin (just like in previous versions). In practice the values seems commonly between 160 and 250.
- if the value is less than 50, OSF will now consider that the value is not the ADC offset but only the margin to be added to the ADC value measured 3 seconds after power on. If you motor has no big difference depending on the pedal position, you can set the value to e.g. 10. Still if you motor has big difference, it could be that you should increase the value. This solution is not perfect if you motor has big difference because you can get different feeling in the assistance depending on the position of the pedal at power on. That is why it is better to fill the right ADC offset if you can. On the opposite, this can be sometime a solution if the ADC torque offset varies in the time.
When you declare that torque sensor is calibrated, OSF will always use the pedal torque ADC max that you define in javaconfigurator. If you do not know the value for your motor, you can try to set it 450.
Hi man and other ebike heads! I got it work with ..33 when untick calibrated and got it how to see values, offset was 196=207 so i put in java 220, thanks a lot! But i didnt get how i get street mode off, in z2 it was - and second time -, but in this it didnt work, i also tried power and + and it showed 25 in slider but i cannot switch it, some psrt when i tried it couple times, slider showed 60 but still no all power and not goes over 25kmh, what order i need push buttons to get street mode off? Thanks!

I built my bike with the edk01 display. I want to be able to fine tune the assist levels better and also adjust the throthle deadzone. Would that be possible with osf. I don't need the option to fine tune it while riding i am fine with generating a new config every time. Would it also be possible to limit it to 250w and 25 km/h and then remove the limit when turning on the light on the screen?

With OSF you can
- fine tune the assist levels
- adjust the throttle deadzone
- limit to 250W and 25km/h and remove the limit using some buttons. It is done with street/off road modes. Still I do not remember the buttons to (de)activate the limit. It is probably not with turning the light on/off.

i didn't see a way to change street mode on the edk01 display. i don't want to buy another screen for the bike.

+ and Power at the same time
It didnt work with me, first i saw slider on 25kmh after p and +, still 25kmh and no power, next time p and + slider showed 60kmh but still goes 25kmh and still not all power, also tried like readme said, 2 times light button like in z2 but on lvl1 assist, but still nothing..

🔧 Method 1 – Quick toggle (most common)

  1. Turn on the display and make sure the motor is running (pedal or spin the wheel so the motor is active).
  2. Press and hold the “Power” button and the “+” (Up) button together for a few seconds.
  3. The bike will switch between Street Mode (speed limited) and Off-Road Mode (full power).

🔧 Method 2 – Using the settings menu (E02 parameter)

  1. Go to Assist Level 1 on the display.
  2. Press the Light button once → the code E02 will appear (this is the Street/Off-Road parameter).
  3. Press the Light button a second time (within 5 seconds) → the display will blink, showing the new mode.
    • Steady = current mode.
    • Blinking = the mode has just changed.
  4. Leave it, and after a few seconds the display will confirm the change.

✅ Summary:

  • The shortcut is Power + Up button (while motor is running).
  • The menu method is via E02 with the Light button at Assist Level 1.

It didnt work with me, first i saw slider on 25kmh after p and +, still 25kmh and no power, next time p and + slider showed 60kmh but still goes 25kmh and still not all power, also tried like readme said, 2 times light button like in z2 but on lvl1 assist, but still nothing..
In the Information menu you have to change speed limit for e.g. 55km/h (password 2020). After that you can use shortcut + and Power.

Its s been 60kmh since i get motor on my hands, it just stays street mode no matternwhat i do, i spend yesterday almost hour to switch modes with lights button and power and ±, tried switcing modes, but sometimes it shows couple of times error 1 row, no mstter was active or not, also error 2 no matter on or off, 25kmh and ~500w.. i just put offroad mode in and after work ill try again or lost again my interest and put og fw in and wait months if someone have right answers, its pain in the ass me to drive 25kmh 😄 also sometimes when i switch gears up it gives me error 7 but i need look that after work.. thanks still for everyone your help!

For Street Legal mode, I recommend setting the speed to 25 km/h but setting the power to 500 W. Nominally, you'll get 220-250 W of power, with a maximum of 500 W, which I consider legal.

if you want to get rid of error e07 increase overcurrent error delay, it should help

I think problem solved, i was forgot switch offroad limit from 25 to 60 to ...33 version but didnt try with limiter cause hurry to work, but why it feels so powerless, like i only have 800w use? With fixed og fw it was muchuch more powerful. And what is now best settings to put torque settings, step etc? I have assist settings on 2nd page in java like it was when i donwload ...33 version, can i rise assist on there or is it already almost maximum what in can put there, i read somewhere those values needs to be half vs z2, with z2 i had last assist vl all maxed out and it feeled almost same power like now z8. Motor is from varstrom

I installed the V00.01.33 Katana compilation firmware and have the feeling that the support is more erratic than the previous 32 Katana firmware; perhaps a few bugs have crept in.

I also noticed strange things with the thumb throttle setting.

In the technical menu, I was shown
throttle
min 0
max 255

With this setting, the motor runs without any input. When I then activate the brake sensor and go back to the technical menu, I suddenly see
throttle
min 46
max 164

If I then set the throttle to min 50
max 170

the throttle works. I'm confused.
Has anyone else made similar observations?

I have the same. After setting the min to 50, works fine.

This is strange because I did not change the code about throttle between version 32 and 33 (for VLCD5 versions).
Changes were related only on the ADC torque (offset and max).
