Samsung 50S vs 50G

Out of 9 emails sent to EU businesses offering custom e-bike batteries none have replied over the last 10 days.

So I decided to purchase the Amorge Samsung 50S

Amorge then sent me an invoice for an EVE 50pl battery 🤷🏼‍♂️ 🤣



Samsung 50S vs 50G

I’ve just had a quote from Amorge for a small 15Ah 720Wh battery with Samsung 50S cells, for my 2nd conversion/build.

50G cells are also an available option.

Would the 50G cells be more suited for my needs ?

Class 3, PAS only 750w, 48V 15Ah grocery getter. Typically under 10 mile round trips, occasional short steep climbs and sometimes towing up to 66lbs.

Is my understanding correct that the difference between the 50S & 50G cells is

The 50S has a higher capacity and discharge rate making it a more peppy, less saggy and typically a shorter cycle life expectancy.

The 50G being less peppy while having a reasonable capacity/discharge rate and decent cycle life.

I also have a EM3ev 13s4P with Samsung 50E cells, which I’m very happy with.

Do the 50G cells fall between the 50S and 50E for power/range/performance under load ?

Both cells are pretty outdated tech, Amorge offer much nicer cells now. They likely sell these cheap because they're old stock

You can Google datasheets for cells. The figures you should focus on are continuous discharge rate, cycle life, and the capacity discharge graphs which show actual capacity at different rates.

The converse way to look at it - if you're really at 750w max, 48V system, then the max current draw is around 16A. Given the 50G max continuous discharge slightly over 8A, peak discharge 18+A, you could meet your system requirements with a 2p configuration, and anything more would just be more headroom. So you may not need some top tier cells as they aren't the bottleneck in the system.
 
That's true. Nothing particularly wrong with Samsung cells, I'd just ask about the manufacturing date of the ones they plan to use.

50S are likely overkill (amp wise) for your needs, and lack cycle life. 50G or EVE's similarly spec'd 50E are both high cycle life, mid range cells that are perfect for bikes under 1500W.

There's also a range of higher capacity cells e.g. EVE 58E that give you a little extra range for the same size if that's a need

Amorge also tend to be aimed more at high power bikes and battery builds, so I feel like they may not be as competitive on price for lower end batteries. But I could be wrong and they have quoted you good prices
 
If I had to choose between the Samsung 50G and Samsung 50S, I'd pick Samsung 50G 100% of the time. Imagine the Samsung 50G as a better Samsung 50E, which is why Rivian and Lucid liked to use it.

The 50S cell just dies way too quickly if charged to 100% and is just a cell with slightly higher power density.

If 50Gs are your only choice, go for it.

If you have the cash to spend though, the EVE 58E or RS50 would be your best bets, although the RS50 pack would be quite a bit expensive and wayyyy too overkill.

I’ll be emailing Amorge later today asking about alt cells, manufacturing dates and a quote for a 50G pack.

Max Amps I’ve pulled on my All axle 48V EM3ev 50E pack is a little over 25A @ 1200W.

For this build I’ll be running a “500W” fwd eZee, pas only, cruising at around 20/25 mph.

Earlier in the year while I was looking for, researching, custom size battery packs, I found some that size wise were interesting but they either lacked any cell specs, didn’t reply to emails or appeared expensive.

I emailed Amorge, out of curiosity, about a small pack and they replied quickly, politely and the initial quote was cheaper, with shipping, than anything else I’d found in the EU at that time.

I've always been happy with their customer service, even with only one actual purchase.

Are they offering just a classic heat shrink pack for your specs? I'm planning on building a few small packs soon and kind of didn't consider them for these because most of their packs are either big rectangles or you have to request custom sizing. I can't imagine they would offer down tube mounted packs like hailong/reention style cases

Quick response from Amorge

They’re only offering two cell types for this battery

Samsung 50S
or
Samsung 58E

The 58E being $12 cheaper than the 50S

I’ll have to look at the 58E specs later on in my day but if any of you believe that the 58E will match my needs please tell me, to save me the research time and effort.

There was a sale on the Samsung 58E, $2.45/cell, from 18650battery.com that probably ends soon. Being a sucker for quality cells on sale, I bought 40 cells.

They are testing out around 5500-5600 ah @ 500ma discharge between 4.2->2.8 volts on my Liitokala tester. The datasheet from the above said 5300 mah at .5C discharge. Max rating is 2C or 10.7A. Better than the 50E as far as a little more capacity.,

I've built packs with the 50E and 50S, I haven't encountered short life issues on any of my batteries because I run them below their 1C ratings,

Seems like they all run hot, and their capacity degrades faster than other cells.

This chart shows the Samsung 58e dropping off a cliff at 650 cycles, and a steeper capacity drop than the other cells before then. This is with 0.5c charging 1c discharge, so hardly a stressful cycling regimen.

 
I don’t think Samsung got their chemistry right when transitioning from their tried and true 18650 cells, to 21700 cells. Their competitors have figured out how to get high cycle life, high energy storage, and high discharge rates, seemingly without trade offs, relative to the old 18650 days. There are still trade offs for different levels of cells offered, but the trifecta is actually something you can get now, and at reasonable cost, when that used to not be an option, not to mention the higher charge rates of the newer cells.

Thanks for the info! Wow. That does look bad, but I believe it's still within the datasheet which promises 4.136Ah after 500 cycles @ 1C discharge.

Thank Pajda for the effort of collecting the Data.

The datasheet cycle life claims are just guaranteed minimums.

The Lishen LR2170SK at 5.8 ah nominal capacity, which excels on that same test, has a 500 cycles to 80% or greater capacity in its datasheet, but appears to still have about 90% of its original capacity at 1000 cycles in Pajda's testing.


So after 1000 cycles the Lishen LR2170SK has more capacity, than the Samsung 58E does after 100 cycles.

This is why testing by Mooch and Pajda and others is so important, as the nominal specs are kind of a joke and the proof is in the pudding.
 
Update

I’m still undecided which of the two Emorge offerings, 50S 58E, would best suit my needs…..

I’ve also emailed Nexun.pl, in Poland, for a custom quote from them with EVE 58E’s or SAM 50E.
Hoping they reply promptly.
