Will Tariffs come about and lead to higher priced ebike parts

Current trade war has the US charging 200% tariffs on imports from China. That additional charges looks like about that much.

Our president elect has promised high tariffs on imports. Say these come about within 3 months of his inauguration.

We do have some time to get our purchases before $$$ go up.

I just got a Black Friday offer from SIAECOSYS QS motors.
See: SiAECOSYS Electric Powertrain Store - Amazing products with exclusive discounts on AliExpress

But since I don’t like doing business thru AlibabiEx, I contacted the SISACosys agent that sent me the flyer requesting a direct purchase from them. You will save $$ but you have to make an international wire outgoing transfer for a fee $35.00.

His address is jasmine@siaecosys.com.

I ordered 2- QS2000 V3 motors for $556.50 including air delivery at $140 for both motors. AlibabiEx ($169.44)/motor simply doubled air freight last time I went through posing an order.

From AlibabiEX:

P. S. If you have any confused about the shipping cost, please feel free to contact with us. Also could place order but don't pay first, then we could adjust the price.

Yes, from AlibabiEx the elusive, “…then we could adjust price”
Yes, buy the stuff while you can before the tariffs kick in. They are already. The port of LA, where all our parts frnm China come from, has seen a 45% less reservations taken. Business at the port down 45%. It's a 13 year old's perception of the world's trade and commerce systems. He's a moronic 13 year old and he's in charge of the wealthiest economy in the world and he's running it without benefit of lubrication into ground.

As for me I plan to spend every bit of savings, about $1100 on a new bike to commute to the Bay Area. At least I'll have the benefit of having bought before the 145% tariff on goods from China. I can't imagine paying double plus half. He want revolution. He get revolution. And I'm not speaking in hyperbole when I say we will be digging out from this, the Second Great Depression a shit ton of time longer than the first. Let's just say not in the lifetime of most millenials.

What is HK post? You ordered it, why “probably won’t get it”?
HK post was the practice of mailing it out of Hong Kong for 50 cents, and the USPS had an agreement to bring it to your US address once it reached the USA. Widely abused. You used to get ebike sized batteries wrapped in bubble wrap and stuffed in a mylar envelop shipped for "free" that way.

When the first one came like that, I quit buying them because I didn't want my friendly postman's truck catching on fire. I had no problem though with small stuff shipped like that.

I'm guessing for these amounts that were previously considered de minimis, folks will probably discover some loopholes, maybe in how the declared value is determined. I recall way back when ebay started getting popular, that there were sellers that would have really low prices, but big shipping costs, because the sellers were trying to reduce the fees due to ebay for the sale. Wouldn't work on the big ticket items, but for the lower cost stuff, like ebike parts, I bet we'll so some creativity.

China will happily scale down production and wait it out, they care nothing for the out of work folk as a result, and surplus stock carried now will get discounted and shipped to Europe etc instead. No big deal for anyone other than those who lost their livelihood.

Happy building new industrial infrastructure without government back up, Just dont bank on too many exports to countries that have 'ripped you off' though, fwiw ive drunk my last US brand cola.

I've been getting a lot of cheap NOS parts from England recently. Like a $5 Sram Rocket twist shifter for a front triple derailleur. I suppose they destroyed their economy with Brexit first, so being next to destroy our economy here in the US, there's still some deals. Too bad they don't have a lot of ebike parts, though.

Just imagine how much that frame would cost if it were made in america. Probably pretty close to that.
That's why people trade with other countries. USA is great for cheap corn, soy, peanuts. Not so great for cheap bike frames. It's especially deficient in smart people these days, which has knock-on effects.

From the above article, it looks like we have a 90 day reduction on the tarriffs:

The mutual tariff revisions will be imposed by May 14. Trump’s 20% fentanyl-related levies on China, imposed in February and March, will stay. However, each side has agreed to lower “reciprocal” tariffs on the other by 115 percentage points for 90 days.

That effectively means the US will temporarily lower its overall tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, while China will cut its levies on American imports from 125% to 10%, according to the joint statement.

The good thing about all of this crazy is driving oil companies out of business. I thought Arabia was driving oil prices down but they need the cash and getting it on volume. Building that new city in the sand.

The downside of that is that big oil companies end up consolidating the little guys when they are under extreme fiscal stress.

You think follow-through, consistency, and upholding previous decisions are things we can expect from five hundred quarreling rats in a diseased orange sack? I don't.

The stock market looks to be taking him at his word. Maybe they're just trying to line up some more suckers so they can cash out.

The market will buy on any good news and yes cash out just as quick. I laugh when Gold goes up then people start buying. When you see it going up it's to late. Warren Buffett was the best and he got out of it. They say that he is figuring out tariffs are bad but would not bet on anything. Trump watched the movie escape from Alcatraz, then wanted to reopen it. If that makes sense to you then invest in his trump town on Gaza beach.

It's not good governance, i'm just glad they're backing away from it.

Some import taxes will be used to set up Trumps new 747 given to him from Qatar to use as new Air Force One. You can try to say it's not his but no one will use it but him. He will have it decommissioned when he leaves office. He might get two years out of a 400 million plus President upgrades. Would you say that is an efficient use of the military's money or do we need to fire someone.

Historically, "firing" in this case would involve beheading, defenestration, oubliette, or "firing" squad.

Hmm, i'll take what i can get, at least i can call off panic buying for now.

at least i can call off panic buying for now

Now is the time to buy a lot of items, so you can make a killing and retire when the tariffs go back up.
