19" Motorcycle Wheels vs 26" Bicycle Wheels (rim and tires)

so I don't need a chunky tire like the Shinko 244. Went with the Vee Rubber VRM 013 19" X 2.25". It is a 4 ply DOT rated tire for speeds up to 65 mph.

looking for, 4ply and DOT rated. I'm not sure why DOT is what I want, but I assume its more durable and will last a very long time.

This is where I read the DOT sizing limits. But I swear I read it from a guru.

Yeah. The manufacturers make this one year and that another. My bike is an "X-C" bike and can do max 180mm rotor and has exactly ONLY 2.75-2.8 inches in the rear to fit. Some "Downhill" bicycle tires come wider. My tire is a 2.5", and empirically measures 2.5" on a 1.4" 19" rim. I have almost exactly .125 inch on each side of the tire to the frame. Works good. I wouldnt want to stuff a 2.75" tire in there. I would rub.

I went with the Duro HF319 Vintage MC tire, both the same size, good deal and DOT 4 ply in a 4 lb package. Front is 9.9lbs with hub, rotor, axle, spokes, tire, tube. Old P rated ? I think. 41L? (320 pounds,75 MPH)

If I would do it again, I would consider 18" or 17" for the selection. Bike tires are hopeless. I been hittin small flights of stairs and dont worry about the rim.

$35usd for tire

= Ouch!
ebay, same ball park.

19 inch tires thinner than 2.75 are not sold by normal USA motorcycle or bicycle tire suppliers.
The thinnest “metric street” tire available is 80/90 – 19, which is about 2.75 – 19.
Though the tire on the wheel I bought was 70/100 - 19.

Ah found one on kimpex, the guys at the dealership had the catalogue and couldnt find shit.

Hey guys, would any of you know the best type of washers to use for smaller 12 gauge nipples on the motorcycle rims?

This would be so a smaller nipple would be able to be used in a larger motorcycle rim hole.

What is the best material to use?

Thanks

may not need washers if you can find nips and a rim with holes that match..

"CUSTOM MADE 12,13 gauge black oxide or blue zinc plated (silver)high carbon steel superior quality spoke nipples! What makes these the badass of spoke nipples is they have a 9.75mm head sooo they fit the large size (8mm)spoke holes on a motorcycle rim.." from eBay ..

I actually have those Holmes hobbies steel nipples. I have them from a previous build before I used 10 gauge spokes and nipples.

The issue I have with them is they are not very good. The 12 gauge spokes seemed to easily pull out of the nipple for some reason. I also found that if I take a spoke and just keep tightening the nipple on the spoke, it will bottom and then if I turn it hard enough with just my hand it will actually keep turning?? It doesn't seem to be threaded properly. Maybe I just got a bad batch.

When was using a bike with those holmes hobbies steel nipples I remember a few times my spokes would pull right out of the nipples while riding the bike.

Brass nipples on the other hand are so much better than the steel nipples. They hold tight, they seem to turn smoother. Brass is also like self lubricating when compared to steel. Plus you do not have to deal with corrosion.

these are not holmes nips, so the quality may be better?? (no negative product reviews from this ebay seller that I've seen so far) ..
so did you measure your rim holes or not;) ??

They are good quality. Brass. I had bad nips at first from treatland.tv , galv. steel.. galled, never tension, pull htreads out at the slightest over tension... ect.

These are leagues better in the 12g that I have. They are Sapim stainless and good brass.

Oh, I didn't see the link but I found it.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/E-BIKE-MOPED-SUR-RON-MOTOPED-12-13-GAUGE-CUSTOM-WICKED-WHEELWERKS-MOTO-NIPS/401895305548?hash=item5d92d3b14c:g:s8sAAOSwqvxeJ5Yk

This is probably what I need, I have to measure. Maybe it is worth the try over what I have. The problem is they are crazy expensive. I wonder if this is the same stuff as the holmes hobbies sells.

The whole reason to buy the Holmes nipples was because the nipples had a wider head (6mm OD) to them, normally found on 9 or 10awg nipples but had threads for 12/13/14 spokes. The shipping was always to expensive to ship to Canada.

The only other way around it was to us a washer, and dish it with a hydraulic tubing flaring tool.
12ga nipples have a 4.6mm body, and a 5mm washer works well.

Standard nipple gauge / diameters:

14 gauge = 4.1mm body, 6.2mm head (common bicycle size)

13 gauge = 4.1mm body, 6.2mm head

12 gauge = 4.6mm body, 7.5mm head

11 gauge = 4.6mm body, 7.5mm head

10 gauge = 6.0mm body, 9.4mm head

IDk but that is not the link I provided. Josh is VERY expensive.... AND steel... black oxide or blue zinc plated (silver)high carbon steel .

Link I provided shows Brass 8mm head, 16mm x 5.5mm body.... 1.20$ ea.

Josh initially used holmes nips then made some design changes and had them custom made by manufacturer.. the heads are larger than moped nipples.. just use spoke prep since there not brass.. as mentioned, ppl used washers bc they had too, but now you don't have to.. (it's also possible your holmes nips stripped from running your large hub motor up stairs?? surry won't have this unsprung issue;)..

What I'm confused about is that link Dogdipstick is talking about. I did not see a direct link to a nipple with an 8mm head.

I did find this link, from searching the link he did provide:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/BRASS-NIPPLES-12-Gauge-2-6mm-WM-CN-Silver-Black-13-16mm-Any-Quantity-NEW/263208774139?hash=item3d487729fb:m:m-NPUykGFvcX4gvb8TdoJWQ&var=562202717101

IT does not specify exactly how the diameter of the nipple head.

My rim holes are about 6.87mm in diamter.
My Holmes Hobbies steel nipples are 9.45 mm in diameter.

I'm not sure if 8mm will be enough for a 7mm hole? If those are really brass nipples then I would pay the price.

Then the other question is what is the diameter of the 12 gauge nipples that the Sur-Ron 18" moped rim uses? Because I will have those nipples to use?

The 18" x 1.6" Rim I will be using
KJi8XeT.jpg

My Rim is a Suron 19" in 1.4" wide.. and the Brass Wheelmaster nips from Yojimbos garage in eBay.... above are in the center of this picture. I tried to get the best dimension for the holes.. you can see approx.. The larger (on left) ones are for the Treatland.Tv 11g spokes, ..the (right) is a Sapim brass 13g nip/spoke. Center is the ( 12g long body) nip I bought from Yojimbo. Fits my Suron 1.4" wheel well. Good think I bought one extra nip, eh? I always try to buy at least one extra.

THIS is my rim. I did buy them from Josh @ Wicked Wheel works. https://www.ebay.com/itm/SUR-RON-X...82626?hash=item5d9365d3c2:g:qRQAAOSwrCFdkRA0
Hope this helps.

OK, I bought the Sur-Ron wheel set so I have 2 new rims to use for the Sur-Ron. That means I will take apart my original rim to use for this 18" build. This is because I need the hub.

I removed my Sur-Ron rear wheel and removed one of the nipples. They are steel. But the head measures 9mm and they work perfectly with my 18" rim.

The holes on the Sur-Ron rim are about 6.5 mm.

I'm good to go with these, there is no reason at this point to buy other nipples. The Sur-Ron steel nipples never gave me issues or pulled out. I guess I will have to use some never seize on the spokes? I remember using that in the past as that was recommended to use for spoke prep.

This is a steel 12 gauge Sur-Ron nipple.

Try a stainless steel M6. make sure your nipple is less than 6mm at the barrel before you go out and buy 36 of them.

if you need better tension, you can use belleville washers (domed washers). iirc liveforphysics built some wheels with them successfully.

19x1,4 + 2.75 tires are no problem

Thank you Merlin, I like the idea of using a rim on the narrower side so long as it works well, as I would think this gives the tire a taller profile and is so better for shock absorption, which for me is a priority along with a tire thats all purpose, flat resistant and stable at moderately fast (40ish mph) speeds. I was looking at 24 inch bike rims to pair with a 3 inch 24 inch Denzel E bike tire which seems practically unique in terms of its toughness. It seems like there's some strong wide 24 inch bike rims being made but it's hard to get your hands on one. The dominator 2 unicycle rim is sold out everywhere, and I cannot find a MTX 39 or the 50mm Alex rim they use for motopeds. Anyway 19x1.4 rims + 2.75 tires look like a great way to go. There are many more heavy duty tire choices and I think they will have 6mm hole that will work with the homes hobbies moped nipples to use 13 gauge spokes and nexus 3 hub. I am still looking for a good value 135mm bolt on or QR hub able to take 13 gauge spokes for the front.

the denzel 24x3.0 tire, do you know where to get them in the usa? I was at motocruzin
https://www.motocruzin.com/product/denzel-e-bike-tire-24x3
but they wanted $650 for shipping a $50 tire  . I fired off an email to east gem http://www.eastgem.net/tire-24x3.html
seems theyre in china, could be a long wait
