36v 8ah Nimh Battery Box. Continued.

Now that's a really nice bike. I love the attitude it gives! I'll bet it's nicely balanced to ride - encourages you to give it a good thrashing yeah?

Now that's one 'baaad' ride!

go Y!!!!!!

thats a cracking looking bike (really jealous here  ) lol
cannot wait to see her go, nice job mate very cool 8)
video asap!!!!!! lol

cheers,

MY.... GOD .... .MAN ......

The nimh... may have to come off.

409 = 42 km/h = 26 mph

406 = 60 km/h = 37 mph !!!

26 mph is fast enough for me, i was following cars down the 4 lane ( 2 lane each way.. ) i blew by a bunch of kids walking on the sidewalk and as soon as they realized the speed i was traveling at i heard them yell in the distance * WHOAA...... YEAHHHHHHH !!! WOOOOOO GO MAN GOOOOO * :D i think they aproved !

My nimh canot deliver 20amps sustained, required for this much speed.. so i end up 90 % in 409 and 10 % on go-fast mode to get out of bad traffic.. with Lithium on board.... high-speed is an option when requried, as often as required ! :!:

What is your loaded voltage at 60km/h? Lithium might make you the next member of the 40mph club 8)

75.x v at 60 km/h 16 to 17 amps depending on the wind gusts. ( 20 amp controller, DB says 23.3amp max )

I was keeping my eyes on the road !

This is one of the early 406/409 i got from a guy in ontario, the newer one's are supposed to be a bit faster.. we will find out for sure !

And on top of that i was carrying the NIMH packs on the bike as well !( + 30 lbs )

Comparative Hubology
I wanted a feel for the kind of thrust/torque you're describing with your small-wheel/small-motor combo compared to mine. The sim doesn't have a 409 option, but it says a 408 in a 20" wheel at 75 volts 23 amps generates max 57 ft-lbs of thrust. My 5304 in a 24" at 75 volts 35 amps maxes at 76 ft-lbs.
Considering the amperage disparity, and that you have a 409 not a 408, that's not much difference! Replace your 20 amp controller with a 40 amp controller and the sim says you'll get 72 ft-lbs. We'd have a close drag race! :D

Because it's a 5303 in a big wheel, Lowell's system, for all its power, is surprisingly not much thrustier -- sim says his 5303/26" @ 90V 60amps maxes at 82 ft-lbs.

Lowell, how long do you sustain 85 km/h ? minutes ? or seconds ? I've watched your videos but can't read the DB much.. gotta download the viewer....

I done 10km at a time at 80+, although the 2C drain on the batteries means range is only 35-40km when ridden like that. The low end thrust could be better, and I'd like to improve off the line acceleration while keeping a minimum top speed of 80.

Hey Gaston;

Great to see the bike at long last!

Well I think it is official I have become addicted to the forum.

8:30 on a friday night and I am home reading about e-bikes instead of out on the town (village) with my girlfriend LOL.

I think it was Xyster who expressed the sentiment that this forum is kind of like his high school cluster of geeks. I get it now, but this is way more fun!

The biggest downside is the difficulty of meeting at the park after school and trying out each others bikes. Oh well some other time maybe.

Cheers Ypedal I want one for myself.

So I am back at the beginning once again with the design choices.

Great fun!

Greg

Have you posted specs on what this build is like now and the configurations that you have tried?

I would be interested in a history cause I know you have tried out different configs over time.

The start of this madness :

http://www.ypedal.com/aboutme.htm

Fun night !.. just got back from a ride with a friend, covered 25 kms of road/trail .

Found a BMX track recently built, i ran thru it with the Chaos, i need to tighten my straps a bit but the bike held up better than expected, jumping curbs, off-road trails, wheelies..

Downtube : 12.5 wh/km

24 kms
7.8ah
End of ride rest voltage : 38.5v ( 36v 20ah LiMn )
Min Volts = 36.2v
Max Amps = 24.5

Top speed 405 at 37v Lithium = 37 km/h

---------------------------

Chaos: 14.0 wh/km

28 kms
5.8 ah
End of ride rest voltage: 75v ( 72v 8ah nimh )
Max Amps = 26.2 ( ? )
Min Volts = 58.6

Top speed in 409 mode , 73v nimh = 42 km/h
---------------------------

The downtube got a flat front tire, reason for distance diference of 4km , removed the front wheel, drank a beer and sent my friend with the norco to find a ditch with water in it, found the hole in tube, rode back and patched it ( took the kit along in my back-pack.. always be prepared ! ) Then sent him to the gas station to fill the tire with air.. station was closed so he had to drive to the next one a km away.. Thank got for Power-Assist.. only took him about 10 minutes total !

Drag Raced both bikes on astro-turf in a soccer field.. the Chaos just pulls away and keeps going! lol.. Tried both turf and pave.. no contest.

Kept riding, got home, BBQ'ed and a few more beers.. and i'm looking at the couch. looks mighty comfy..

Well. so far so good.. i've been bashing the bike pretty hard, by my own standards i'm satisfied.

I've found that riding in the hot sun with warm batteries will make the straps strech a tiny bit.. but once everything cools down it's tight again. But this is still plenty strong.

I've took the bike back to the BMX track tonight, some kids playing around were pretty amazed by the bike.. blew their mind that an Electric Bike could be taken off-road without falling apart.

I"ve been jumping curbs, practicing my wheelie technique dropping the front end hard and it's much.. MUCH better than before with all the weight on the rear rack.

15 lbs on a rear rack is not bad.. 30 lbs makes me nervous in rough stuff. but 15 in the frame and 15 on the rack is a good ballance.. i can lift the bike up off the ground with one hand by the middle bar, perfectly ballanced. 80 lbs tho....

get some video up Y!!!!

Cheers

D

Video will be done shortly, i want to get someone to video me on the bike for a change.. instead of the chest cam. Gives a better perspective of how the bike handles and the suspension works.

The folding bike with the lithium pack is pretty fast.. might work as a chase vehicle.

I need to replace my brake pads pretty soon.. they are starting to squeal !

Other than the obvious .. no.

It was a graceful failre actually, i was about 100 ft from home after a stress release run from work, all of a sudden i hear a ZZzzzzzzz.. so i hit the brakes and turn around to find the rack had cracked at the top and was hanging down on my rear tire ( still attached ) ...

I pulled it up and it snaped clean off.. so i walked it home.

I have 2 spares, brand new one's.. and I honestly canot give this rack a bad rating, it held up like a champ for 2 years of hard use and abuse..

In comparison, my WE rear rack only lasted 2 weeks ! lol..

Glad you were lucky with a soft failure in that the rack stayed attached to the bike and gave you a chance to grab the box and carry it home.

Good luck with those Lithiums

I'm having great luck with my LI-ION cobalt packs nothing like a 40 to 50 mile range. Lead Acid is nothing but a bad memory

ARGH....

I get ready for work this morning, It's 8:50am, i need to have my ass at my desk by 9am sharp....

Turn off the chargers.. remove the charge wires.. push the bike backwards out of my office and WTF??... FLAT TIRE !!!

This must be "the week" or something...... First flat on the Norco i've had.

So, i called work, told them i'd be late. Ran to the garage for some zip ties and strapped a controller to my Giant ATX, grabbed a 48v Nicad pack from my stash of batteries.. in the back-pack with an extension wire to the controller and off i went for work...

Got at my desk 11 minutes late ! :?
