96 volts motor on 72 volts controller

AFAIK from RC background...
Combination of 96 volts rated motor with 72 volts FOC controller should not be a problem.
But, the sales guy from Golden Motor says that it is not.

I can understand if a 72v motor will not be good with 96v controller (cable gauge, etc.)
Is there any reason how/why they won't be compatible other than possible controllers settings?

Background story:
I bought the 'wrong' combination of 96v motor and 96v controller (squarewave).
Now I want to change the controller (sinewave), and decide to lower the operating voltage to 72v.
I figured instead getting another set of motor-controller combo, I just need to buy the controller that works on 72v.

No reason a higher votlage motor won't "work" with a higher voltage controller.

It will simply spin a lot slower than it would have at the higher voltage (it's proportional, by the motor kV (RPM per volt).



However, a higher voltage controller will also work fine at a lower voltage (as long as you can lower it's LVC), so there's no reason to change the controller itself out, if you just want to use a lower voltage battery (you don't say *why* you're lowering the voltage of the system).

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.

Understood that they might wound the motor differently for 72v and 96v.
But since I am planning to use some gearing anyway, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

The *why* part is because I ordered a square wave controller without noticing it /:-D
Kinda got blinded by the 96v options (their FOC controller is not available at 96v).
Only when the motor and controller is currently on its way, I realised I have ordered the wrong type of controller for my need.

Off topic:
Any reason why anyone still wants to use square-wave controller these days?

A 72v controller shaoul have 100v caps lock inside the controller and see.
