Got my first E-Bike.

It's a giant hard tail mountain bike.
Motor is a crystalite 5404.
Controller, 18fet crystalite 72v
Batteries, turnigy 4 x 5cell, 2 x 20 cell packs at the moment. :?
And all the other goodies were bought from Hyena.
Great service mate package arrived well packed with everything there.
Only issue I had was when were ready to go, the motor spun backwards.
So I spent a couple of hours working out the wiring sequence with the phase and sender wires.
finally got it working smooth and then worked out after a email off Jay that all I had to do was unplug a loop wire. :?
Oh well live and learn.

This motor is great. So much power, it pops wheel stands with a breeze . Yesterday I got off work early and rode 26 kms on 1 battery pack. No matter what I put into it, it stays cool to the touch.
It drew 4000 watts on a up hill burst and still cold. My max speed has been 72kmh.
I've finally put a chain tensioner on due the chain be too loose and got some wire to run the battery pack in a back pack.

Hi Binlagin,

I have the packs in my backpack and I prefer them there to keep the bike light as possible. We are doing a fair bit of off road and I don't mind carrying stuff on my back. I have a fire proof battery charging bag where batteries are in. If I decide to keep this motor in this bike I will make a carbon or glass molded case incorporated into the frame. I'm focusing on my next project now, my Giant DH Comp. I'm going for a mid mount but having a hard time finding a free wheel chain wheel for the cranks. I found a some in the UK but they wont deliver to Australia it seems. Anyone have some help for that?

Looks good mate, very understated considering how much power that thing can take and what you usually see them strapped to.
72 is higher than I would have expected on 20S though. I assume that was down a hill ?

I think my speedo is out but it does sit behind cars doing 60 no problem.

I spent all afternoon bolting the motor onto my Giant this afternoon since my dropouts arrived.
Had some issues with the dropouts that I bought from Kiwi. A fair bit of grinding to line everything up.
The wheel is still a bit far to one side yet but got it rolling. This motor is wide so it makes everything a squeeze.
The old chain is stretched so i'll get a new one tomorrow or Saturday.

This motor fit on my hard tail a lot easier than the DH Comp.

If your other giant is a DH comp they're famous for having wonky offset dropouts. Well not wonky but you have to do some pretty extreme dishing on the rim to get it to sit right (especially if you want a fat tyre on there)

Kiwis dropouts are usually pretty good so I'm surprised you had issues with them. The 5404 is a beastly motor though so I'm sure the effort will be worth it. You'll probably need to fit an uprated shock though with all the extra weight hanging off the back. I dont have alot of confidence fitting the big heavy bastards to the back hard ridden mountain bikes. The bombers get away with it with a purpose build cromo frame and dirt bike spec rear shock but I worry how long it'd last on a regular DH bike. I guess for trails it'd be OK but I wouldn't go doing too many drops and high speed rough stuff.

Hi all finally got the motor to fit just.
Had to do some spoke adjusting and a bit of grinding on the dropouts, wacked a new chain on it,and tensioned it. Had a sit and it felt to lay back for bush riding so I moved the bars forward with extensions, plus dropped the forks 20mm and moved the seat forward slightly. Had a ride and it feels GREAT almost like a motocross bike front wheel is gonna be hard to keep down. The power is great. Rode over some freshly bulldozed ruts and skimmed them like they weren't there.
A really smooth ride so far. Yet to put too the test out at some trails. I can see it will be good for flowing rides but the real test will be the tight trails.I'll try and get a video in the next couple of days.

Had my first real test ride today at Wian Wian state forest. Checked over everything before we left. It all looked sweet.
Threw the bikes in the van and headed off. Got to the falls in about half hour drive. Pasted some mountain bikers on the way up the hill.
When we arrived there was a few cars around , the plan was to ride to the top of the hill about 15kms and then on the way back hit some of the side single tracks.
But not all went to plan. about 7kms out I lucked out and got a flat. I think my pressure was a little low in the back tyre.
The tube got pinched on a rock. I pushed it back 5kms while Ezza rode back and got the van.

So when we got back home I put the down hill tyre on it. I will get some tyre gel to put in the tubes.
Also we'll take more tools to do repairs. Lesson learned.

I was having quite a few problems with pinch flats until I used 2 extra innertubes and ran at a higher PSI. I also started carrying some small tire irons and patch kits to help with any issues I encountered on the road or bush!

Got a new thick walled tyre today and a DH tube. Put them on and also put in a little slime. put heaps of pressure this time.
Will test tomorrow on a local Down Hill track.
Hopefully all goes well. Wednesday we'll be going for another trail ride.

PM me the difficulty you had with the adapters. I have been having a few accuracy issues with the lazer cutting, considering cutting on a different machine. Still selling adapters 20 sold now, so will make any improvements to the next lot.

It's not a big deal Kiwi, I think it's more that the bikes frames have a little more paint in places than others.
nothing that a grinder can't fix, But there was a small cut off bolt that didn't reach the thread on the left side I think.
Maybe leave that bolt longer.

If anyone is reading can anyone tell me if this rim would be better for rocky tracks or jumps than the original crystalyte double walled rims.

Have you buckled your stock rim ?
If you haven't wrecked it I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to replace it.
2 issues with that rim
- it's a presta valve, but easily drilled out
- but the bigger issue is the eyelettes so you can only run 14ga spokes. You can file them out but that's a massive pain in the arse.
If you want to get really serious I'd get a light weight alloy 21" front dirt bike rim and lace it up with 10ga spokes

I'm at Beaudesert today with Sean on his giant Anthem.
We're gonna hit Mt Joyce up. Should be some awesome tracks here.
Looks dry though.
I remember riding sort bikes up here a few years back and man it was dusty.
So much that you had to follow the guy infront of you back tyre.
Hopen to get some video.

Just got back from Mt Joyce and it was awesome apart from Sean falling off near the end and hurting his knee.
Plus all the oil in my rear shock leaked out a couple of days ago and it was a little hard to handle but I managed.
On the tight corners the back wheel would start bouncing with only a touch of brake. I'll have to invest in a new Rock Shox
or a Fox Dhx. Does anyone have any idea which shock fits the 2002 DH comp the best?

There really isn't alot of options for a rear shock on the Giant DH comps.

My rear shock leaked all of it's oil out... and when it did it started to chatter like this:

There was only two viable options, even after all the suggestions on this board.

Because of the way the rear sock is jammed into the lower linkages you are really limited. I only came up with the refreshing the Rockshock that came with my bike or buy a used Manitou 6way swinger.

You could build a custom shock with a remote resivoir... but you will be soon paying more for just the shock then the whole bike is worth.

That's exactly what mine is doing.
I'm just gonna buy a new Rock Shox or fox to suit.
I'm also looking into buying a new motobike rim to go on the back instead of the crappy Crystalyte rim which is looking a bit worse for wear.
I'm going for a 21" rim.
